Life must be miserable as a lobbyist. You can't speak with any passion or personality, you have to just read off of a sheet of paper that has been given to you. You're basically an empty shell of a human being with no soul...how the fuck do these people look at themselves in the mirror.

    • @rossmanngroup

I think I would do a great job as an anti-repair lobbyist and I think it would be GREAT fun. I swear to God, sometimes I want to publish videos that say "here is how I would answer this question, and respond to the Senators with a genuine answer from the opposite side." I do this with friends every now and then and it is really fun, but then also it becomes sad, because you realize that people who have been doing this for 30 to 40 years are still so garbage at a junior high school level of debating and public speaking.
I could argue against this bill while citing patriotic tropes in a genuine and authentic manner. I can come off as authentic, without reading from a script, while arguing against it. Sometimes it really is tempting for me to publish videos that say this is what I would say if I was an anti repair lobbyist.
But, I do fear that at some point one of these dodo birds might actually see my video and use it to reproduce what I said effectively, so I don't do this in public. The last thing I want to do is show up to debate myself. :-)
You can't effectively argue what you believe in if you can't flip a coin and argue the other side as well.

    • @jealexander
      @jealexander 4 ปีที่แล้ว +77

@@heidiaguirre5672 car batteries have nastier chemicals, but lithium batteries fail more energetically. Due to the different casing, a car battery is harder to inadvertently damage and cause to fail; the bigger risk is dropping it on your toe, while an untrained person can easily puncture a pouch type lithium battery (like those typically used in consumer electronics) causing a fire.
Of course none of this is to say people shouldn't be able to repair stuff, just that there is legitimately more risk involved in handling lithium batteries. I use them all the time for RC aircraft (pouch types taped together and wrapped with heat shrink), and there's way more risk of puncturing one in a crash than while replacing an iPhone screen.

That is how any bureaucracy is. Im in nursing school and did a grade grievance (which means i showed evidence to support my answer to a test question with hopes that I could increase my grade and pass the program). And after all of my evidence the nursing professors on the panel said “its not our policy to give points back” and thats all it took for me to lose after I gave 2 and a half hours of evidence and a month of work. Literally all bureaucracies are built to give those in power the ability to win without evidence. They are built to make the person who was wronged feel heard and then ultimately overruled.

    • @Roseknight888

i want to be up front, I'm with you on the idea that what their saying is nonsense
The argument they Want to use is "an incorrectly handled Li-ion battery has the capability and history of expanding, exploding, starting a fire, and spraying hot acid everywhere, causing serious injury, damage, and maybe death."
The problem with that argument, to the people who have touch a Li-ion battery for longer than 10 seconds, is that it is a hell of a lot harder to blow up a battery than, like in you're example, blow up a tractor tire. a Li-ion battery blows up (generally, please point out more reasons if i'm off the mark) because you short the battery to itself and the current fucks the internals, the substance that holds the charge hyper-expands in the presence of current it's not designed to handle, and blows. but Li-ion batteries that are constructed with repair in mind with always be shielded in a manner to prevent this horror-case and any instruction (no really, any instruction, doesn't matter what level. Be it DoD, AASP, Big Tech company repair squad, i don't care.) for changing the Li-ion batteries in anything that HAS that kind of battery is going to include a big fat "IF THE SHIELDING IS DAMAGED IN ANY WAY, DO NOT USE THIS BATTERY" warning.
So, if the information for that kind of repair were available, in a sense that fits the spirit of Right to Repair, then the concern they are espousing become moot immediately. Almost like the designers of Li-ion batteries already addressed this hazard and distributed safety instruction at every level of Manufacture, Assembly, and Repair.
So yeah, you're absolutely right, anyone trying to point to Li-ion batteries as the reason common Americans should be scared to change their own fucking batteries are out of touch and trying to sell you on a con.

Listen man I've personally seen a apple laptop battery explode throwing a man 28,000 feet into the atmosphere where he got sucked into the engine of an airliner which subsequently crashed into a nuclear power plant which then melted down and exploded destroying 1000 square miles of farmland that subsequently led to a huge famine that caused over 22 million deaths. Dem battery's are no joke. It's too dangerous for simple people to repair such sophisticated technology. You have to have a apple genius trained from birth to work on it.

[Louis] It reminds me of an AutoZone commercial.

[Sen Carlyle] Thank you sooo much.
[Sen Stanford] When I had a fan break in my XBOX I only had one option. I had to mail it in and they wiped my data.
[Sen Stanford] My point is this is about competition. If there were competition service providers would have to get my device back to me how I want it.
[Sen Stanford] I respect copyright, but replacing a fan doesn’t seem to have anything to do with that.
[Lobbyist] We recognize that this is an issue that many members are worried about. We look forward to having robust conversations.
[Sen Eriksen] I can take my car to the dealership, an independent repair shop, or my neighbor Eddie.
[Sen Eriksen] I don’t know what an XBOX looks like, but when I take my computer in it’s the same thing. They have to send it in.
[Lobbyist] The technology companies are working on um, they are meticulously designed.
[Sen Liias] Do I own this phone? ... Do I have some ongoing commitment to you? Am I renting from a company?
[Sen Liias] I get to do whatever I want with my pencil.
[Lobbyist] Senator, clearly there are a lot of issues that we have to go through. *crowd laughs at lobbyist*
[Lobbyist] We have authorized repair centers that we have vetted ... so that you can be sure TikTok wasn’t put on your phone.
[Owen] I can make an EMP Device from a Microwave, I can release the Freon from a refrigerator.
[Owen] We should be teaching children how to rip apart computers.
[Tarah] I’m a cyber security policy fellow and an offensive security researcher. That’s how you say hacker when you’re testifying in a legislative committee.
[Tarah] Replacing a battery is not the same as bypassing encryption.
[Bob] I’m gonna go rogue... and keep this as brief as possible.

I would've loved to move to Italy except the government is so much more strict there and obviously there is a police corruption problem. Everything was also super expensive. Gas in America was around $2.50 and the diesel, which is still the cheapest there was typically $7-8 a gallon. Hopefully the bill for waste helped the trash problem because it was BAD when I was there. The country side was fine but cities were just piled up with trash.

Their former frontman, fraudster Mr. Berlusconi, was even 'sentenced' to the usual piss-poor time (8 months) in the clink - never served - for having defrauded the Italian IRS 370 million euros in a complex offshore tax scam to create slush funds.
