- If you are ever lucky enough to meet a Quokka, chances are you’ll break out a big smile. This popular marsupial is synonymous with Perth’s favourite holiday spot, Rottnest Island. The island got its name from Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh, after he named it ‘Rotte Nest’ (rats nest in dutch), mistaking the ubiquitous small macropods (the kangaroo and wallaby family) as giant rats.
They have been described as the "world's happiest animal" and a photo of a Quokka snapping a selfie has proven why. The animal became instantly famous and popular after appearing in a selfie with the famous tennis player Rodger Federer. Since then, people from all around the world have travelled to this island with the sole intention of catching a selfie with the cute marsupial.

@@coatzz3776 Oh lord. Do some research. Yes, you can kill them by just touching. The oils and bacteria on your hands can kill them. You aren't supposed to touch them or feed them. If they scrape by your skin it's ok but you shouldn't allow it.

Lucky for me I grew up surfing on this amazing island and got to have many a funny adventure with the Quokka’s. We would camp at surf spots in caves and wait for the dawn patrol. Not uncommon to wake up to have a couple of Quokka’s inside your board bag down by your feet happily hogging all the warmth.
One cool fact about the Quokka - fully protected not just by law but if you harm them, in anyway tiny way, waiting for you back on the mainland will be the entire population of our capital city ready to greet you and serve justice back for the defenceless Quokka...🙂

That's where you're wrong. They're actually slugs that live on quokkas. Those slugs fall off when they get too big.

I went to Rottnest for my year 6 school camp for 2 days, and I remember in the free time we had all I would do was sit with a quokka. I even found a baby one and it was so tiny.
I see baby toads where I live. They come out of no where too. They just like chillin in my backyard. From the corner of my eye, sometimes I just think they're bugs. But if I get a good glimpse of them, it's like whoa those things are tiny. Sometimes, they're other sizes. I only see baby snakes on pavement...oh, & I don't live in Australia. But I do find it fascinating to see how other ppl live. Like this is your norm. You prob don't even think that much about it. Me watching yt: yeah, I'm pretty sure I've never seen anything like that before. A rat/kangaroo mix exists? It sure is cute tho. Those little hands 😍🤗

@Hayden Belsham : These are not koalas, miniature or otherwise. While quokkas and koalas are both marsupials, they are in two different families. In fact, they don't even look alike. Now, if you had said a chubby, mini kangaroo, you'd be on to something there.

Quokkas live primarily on Rottnest Island a relatively small territory so feeding can be monitored.
