- After cats, hedgehogs might be the internet's favorite animal.
A unique small garden mammal with a body covered in sharp spines. The back and upper body parts are covered in spines that can be bristled. The spines stick out in all directions and when alarmed the hedgehog will curl up in a ball for protection.
The head, flanks and underparts are all covered in course brown hair. The ears are hairy and prominent, the snout is black, shiny and wet. The eyes are black.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal and can be found by listening for their surprisingly loud snuffling and rummaging in the undergrowth at dawn and dusk. Hedgehogs are also unexpectedly fast movers for their size and have also been seen climbing fences and trees.
Hedgehogs hibernate during the winter months in leafy undergrowth and can be easily killed by careless gardeners by digging compost heaps and burning garden litter without first checking for nesting animals.
Hedgehogs have no real natural predators due to their powerful protection, however cars kill a huge number each year.
The hedgehog was named because of its peculiar foraging methods. These animals root through hedges and other undergrowth in search of the small creatures that compose the bulk of their diet-insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and snakes.
Most hedgehogs don't bite or don't bite often and the more you socialize your hedgie, generally the less it will bite. Basically there are 2 types of bites: The “you smell tasty” bite: This is usually, but not always, preceded by a few licks.

This video is the first I watched about hedgehogs in a human home. They certainly are cute and like toys and they do like a belly rub which helps them unwind!... Aww!!
I’ve had a hedgehog for a year now, I didn’t know they could squeak!! Mine has never made a noise
I didn't know they could earlier until our hedgehog spontaneously had two babies. She never made a sound (besides growling), but her kids definitely squeaked

Awww...that little cutie at the beginning...he so sweet, so PUNK looking with his spikes....such a babe! I do think these guys and girls are the original 'stress ball' NOT THAT you squeeze them, but to hold one gently in your hand and massage their little tummy while they relax and yawn...my God!!...who would not be relaxed by them themselves!!!!

Hedgehogs (usually) only squeak when they're nursing babies. Once they reach maturity (around 3-4 months old), they stop squeaking. They do it as a means of calling their mom when they're hungry or scared. Adult hedgehogs still make noises, but they tend to be more chirping noises than squeaking noises. The chirps mean a number of different things, but usually signals happiness or a mating male trying to search/impress a female. In very rare cases when they're getting threatened by another animal who wants to eat them, they'll scream one of the most frightening screams ever, but they never do that around humans because we're not a natural predator for them.

Actually swimming is very bad for them. They get ear infections very easily and it stresses them out. The person doing that has no idea what they are doing.
