Gurdjieff on Increasing Energy for Self-Remembering

  • In this video, I speak about a passage from chapter 9 of In Search of the Miraculous where Gurdjieff speaks about several things which can eat up our energy and capacity for awakening and self-remembering.
If we can remove these or at the very least reduce these in our lives, we will find it far easier to remember ourselves and to move towards awakening.

In my opinion if the types of diagrams that appear in 'In Search of the miraculous' don't appeal to you, it is fine to just bypass them. Ouspensky was a mathematician as well as a writer philosopher. This is how he viewed and interpreted things, in schematic type diagrams and numbers. This may not be the way you approach life, or indeed the way many others who were around Gurdjieff expressed their ideas about him. It was just particular to Ouspensky. Gurdjieff talked to Ouspensky in Ouspensky's language. But it's all relative. You will find no schematic diagram type representations in Gurdjieff's own writing in 'All and Everything'

That was really wonderful. The mental machine works with the complex breath- heartbeat-mind. If one reduces its velocity, the two remaining ones will reduce their speed, too. The spared energy through the yoga process, Dhyaana, can appear here, because many of wastes you mentioned here will be reduced to a minimum level. The word is so nice, we love to argue, to speak about every imposed subject showed on TV, Internet, newspapers, friends.... the chattering never stops, mind needs itself to be used, an eternal conversation, or we will know the truth. Any mechanical attitude is a repetition, we can not change it. Our soccer team ; our candidate to some office; our religion; we never despise breakfast, lunch, dinner, travels, entertainments, music, hobbies.... yes, to know our vices can demand lots of time from us. Thanks for the article, it is the first time I come here. Success and knowledge to you !

Gurdjieff was a major influence in my life. I read every book I could get my hands on by or about him. I found him most amazing. On people being " asleep ". I am constantly watching and listening to people as I live on the main drag in my town. I can't get over the stupid nonsense that comes out of most people's mouths. No one ever looks at me. They truly are asleep. Big thanks to the internet. And to the military for throwing it over us like a giant net. "self remembering" is simply sitting in a memory that happened a month ago , sitting in the rain waiting for a bus
getting angry in that situation and then you witnessing that change from an observer point of view watching the movie play out,
And understanding OMFG is that me, is that how I act
And then "looking for that needle in a haystack"

Hi Book Club. This is a very good video and I have been a huge admirer of Gurdjieff and the book "In Search of Miracolous". Gurdjieff was a milestone in my spiritual journey and you did very well to break down his concepts into the essence. Otherwise, a lot can be get lost in the tables and calculations. One personal observation that I have with "non expression of negatives' feelings externally is that if one can do that successfully, then automatically one starts to feel less negativity within us. It brings about equinamity in most situations. Secondly, somewhere in the book Gurdjieff defines sin as anything that is "not necessary" and it applies to almost all parameters whether it is talking, worrying, food or self chatter. Keep the good work. I also started a channel recently and made couple of videos of Gurdjieff. Hope the new generation can benefit from concepts and methods of Gurdjieff

You mentioned "mindful walking." Pali sati, Sanskrit smriti, most often translated "mindfulness" is originally a verbal noun, most literally translated remembering, or thinking -- as in thinking what one's doing. As FM Alexander called it (at John Dewey's suggestion), "Thinking in activity." In Chinese Zen they spoke of 非思量, non-thinking. Anyway, Yes!, remembering! An action or activity more than a state. Understood, in light of emptiness, to be a happening, not a thing.

Remembering is simply sitting in a memory that happened weeks ago, watching the movie of the memory play out, watching you act and do ,
You cant remember what you were thinking so its a silent movie, but you do FEEL the emotions you felt

    Everyone needs help
But some need more help than others
First your destroy thier concepts of thought
Second you Sama them you break thier focus on the LEFT PFC , this is done through music and movement , The Grateful Dead are the purest Sama experience around , Today Even more pure than all the Sufi schools , zero distortion pure energy achieved , pretty much all the DeadHeads know "G" inside out ,
Third you help them remember thier life and trust me the more help they need the more they never look back
The first two are external shocks , cannot be self administered
The last is the last one and that's after the 2 external shocks have been given
The books almost , I mean almost pull it off, but a "G" said only if you already know do you see them
The books were like petals on a flower, to attract you to the people he sent into the world that he knew knew
Personally I think he got desperate at the end, its was too much the wars and losing everything
The stroke whilst driving "we are all accident waiting to happen" we just imagine we are not
So the people he got ready were not ready and it took his prophesy to come true for
As Masser Nullah Muddin would say "the shit to hit the fan"

I don't know if I could live up to all these things.

It’s not about living up to them, it’s about observing oneself and seeing how one lives. Then attempting slowly to bring one of these things into your life, and continuing to observe how difficult that is. And rinse and repeat! 🙏

Hey there. I would say that it would be very difficult not to identify with your strength and physique doing what you do.
But something you could try would be asking the lines of mindful reps, where you are deeply aware of the muscle group you are training and try and feel the contraction. You could also observe the thoughts that arise and are connected to your appearance, and recognise that you are more than just a physical body, and that this is your vehicle for life.
Hope these give you something to work with. Any other questions, I’d be happy to help 😀🙏

Thanks man for the reply🙌🏻
