Thanks again for the great info! Yesterday I became, (after a period of 25 years when I kept several gouramis), the owner of a pair of beautiful honey gouramis. Beautiful, peaceful and graceful fish, just fitting into everything thats positive of holding a community tank without other aggressive fish! Truely the answer for a fish tank to pacify the flossed nerves after a hairy day at work! Yes I too LOVE HONEY GOURAMIS.❤️❤️
I love honey and dwarf gouramis. I usually keep dwarf gouramis for their diversity of coloration, but think I’m going to try my hand at honey gouramis for my new 10 gal
Aw, I used to have these in my my bookshelf planted tank, along with some blue endler guppies. Although the ones I had didn't have the black stripe as prominent, and the edges of their fins all faded into a bright red-orange. They looked like little flames floating all around the tank. Unfortunately I lost them to a miscalculation in dosage of an algae remover. I'm guessing it caused a rapid change in pH which led to pH shock :( I hope that one day I get a chance to keep them again.
I have 3 pairs in my 75g community tank. Mine have a deep honey color. Floating plants are a must. Perfect community fish. If my tank wasn’t already fully stocked, I would get more.
This honey gouramis are great little fish. I have a established pair in my 10 gal. They're a nice colored yellow and very curious exploring with their little whisker fins.

gregg horner I also have the gold variety, I didn't realise there was a difference at first. Have you found that the males are reluctant to breed or the females? Or both
I had a young group of honeys that I got from my LFS. There was one male that grew big and bright, but he was so aggressive. I took him back to the store. That fish had some tude. This was years ago.
I love the Honey Gourami as well, it's one of my favorites. I've had a hard time finding a female and now I don't even think I have the right male. It's hard to find Honey Gouramis without ordering them. Most of the time the wrong fish is labeled honey gourami. Is there a way I could send you a picture so you could identify this male? Thanks
when i was hanging out at the fish store earlier i was playing with the honey gouramis if i'd point to a spot on the tank they'd swim up to my finger and like high five me with their pectoral fins i fell in love i already thought they were pretty but oh my god they're so interactive and adorable too! can't decide whether to get one with a school of glowlight tetras and some corys or just get a group of gouramis... also, out of interest - can you keep different (small) gourami species together in a group? like say one honey, one dwarf, one sparkling or whatever? or would they get sad?
I'd personally only keep either Honey Gouramis together with other Honey Gouramis. Dwarf Gouramis are a little bigger and more agressive and might outcompete your Honey for food.
Very cool been thinking of getting some Honey G. My 54 corner planted tank has sizeable current from a Fluval 306 will that matter? Also at 0:31 there is a long sword type plant, do you know what that is called? I have a large bunch that rise to the top and drape over creating shade and cover. Nice plants but I don't know what they are called?
very cool fish.males tend to have stunningly dark colors in the wild everytime we collect them.even my f0 specimens don't show such colors in the tank.
'caudal peduncle' is really fun to hear and to say! Though if you used it casually at a social gathering of non-aquarium type people, one might get some funny looks! I think I will try it out real soon. 'oh, oh, my caudal peduncle is acting up again' ;-)
Hi. Another great video, thank you. Do you think these guys will be OK in with a shoal of chequer barbs? The barbs are fairly boisterous but the tank is heavily planted. Your advice and expertise would be very much appreciated. Keep up the awesome videos :)
How do you recommend treating Platies for Columnaris. Some I have are passing away without any evidence of any issues. The ones I have caught showing issues I put them in my quarantine tank and are treating them with Kanaplex and API Furan 2. If anyone can shed any light on this issue I would greatly appreciate it. I have never had any problems and I actually have some rare ones that will be difficult to loose. Rachel I would appreciate any help that you can give me. I have never had this issue before but I scoured the internet and this is the only explanation that fits everything I have seen. I made a purchase at a big box pet store and they looked fine but they were the first to go. But I promise quarantine will be followed in my home from now on. I have Platies and a Nerite snails only in this 40 gallon tank. Please help me save all I have left.
I bought to two gourami yesterday with a betta and all was fine in the fluval flex 57 planted tank. Today though i see one gourami is being bullied by the other and is hiding all the time. Should i remove the peaceful one to my other community tank? And wud they attack my shrimp?
Micky this may be to late but just from research I've done I wouldn't recomend it since shrimp are a natrual prey item for them as far as them not getting along they say each male requies 5-10 gallons of water for terratoriol reasons with the males being more colorful& the females mostly a dull silver color also they need at least 1 female per male!
Do they need a low acidic ph or can they live in hard water? My ph from the tap water is around 7.5. I live in California, Los Angeles. I would love to keep honey gourami's! How much did they cost? If they are $10 or less, I can get them. I need to save up money for my upcoming flowerhorn which is $150.
+Jason Guan they are affordable, generally a few bucks and pretty tolerant of water params though in the wild they appreciate softer water. I would think they would work
Rachel O'leary Well I want them to thrive not survive so I think I am not going to get them until I get some driftwood and indian almond leave tannins to help make the water acidic. Hopefully my local pet store sells them for $10 or less.
Jason Guan I live in Los Angeles and I have a pair of yellow honey gouramis in my planted 10 gallon. I put one part dechlorinated water and the rest alkaline drinking water I get from a water shop nearby. I add aquarium salt and stress coat. My gourami pair are happy and their tank mates as well 😁I also keep some frogbit for coverage. They have embraced a few times and bubble nested, no fry though.
Can I keep 1 honey gourami with shrimp in a 30 gal (well planted). I’m not planning to breed shrimp, but would definitely like to have some surviving shrimplets.
I have been wanting them for a while, if I get 4/5 to put in my 60 gallon will they chase each other like other gourami species do? I was wanting all males so idk if that would work , I don't want any aggression in my tank a little nit picking like angelfish sometimes do isn't a problem but the constant chasing and fighting is what I was worried about.
hi. just got a pair of sunset thick lip gouramis. I'm in love. uploading a vid tomorrow. what tank mates can I keep with them if I want to raise the fry in a 65g
I really like your hair in this video; you look like a Pokémon trainer! Back to fish: how big of a harem would you recommend for a planted, 20 gallon high that's already got a a school of trigonostigma espei?
Hello Rachel, i just bought a male honey gourami a couple of days ago, to keep my female dwarf gourami company in my planted tank. I have other nano species in there aswell. I dont usually believe everything i read on the internet, but i value your opinion. I red that honey gouramis need a big planted tank, with lots of places to explore as they get bored very easy. Is it true they can get depressed?. I know its early days, an my gourami still has to get use to the tank and the other fish. How long would it take for mine to color up? I hope he is happy in there or i'll feel sad.
Hi there. I'm considering a Honey Gourami as a centerpiece fish in my 15 gal community tank. I have some mellow ember tetras but I also have some more active fancy guppies. Do you think a Honey could be happy in my tank with the 5 guppies? Thank you.
Can you please do more videos on honey gouramis? They can be kept in groups but you rarely see any documentation of it in captivity. I am interested in keeping a group of females with ember tetras in a 20 gallon long.
Hi Rachel. I got a couple Honey Dwarf Gourami about half an year ago from a LFS here in London. I thought I'm buying F+M but looks like it's two boys. The smaller but more colourful one started harassing the bigger paler one so I split them. A month ago I got a girl from a tank labeled female dwarf gourami. She's grey/striped in colour but similar size and slightly more triangle shape. Anyways. Yesterday when changing the water I decided to put them all three together in my bigger heavily planted tank. They were good at first - it was the girl being feisty if anyone at all. Today, however, they seem to be back to the chase. The tank is really heavily planted so the chases are quite quick and it's actually lot's of hiding, which is interesting to observe. I'm still a bit worried though. Shall I remove one of the boys or if I remove 6-7 teenage (all the) platy maybe I can fit 2 more dwarf gourami girls? Then would five be a good number - 2 boys x 3 girls? And does it matter if the girls are different colours? It's not s huge tank tho - 64 litre cube - heavily planted with layers of plants and rocks, also have photos dipped and it grows like crazy - does magic for the filtration :) . Thanks!
I have just added one of these guys to my 125 litre tank. He has settled in well and hasn't bothered the shrimp. My question is whether can I add another one to the tank? Or did i need to introduce at same time please? Thanks
silver tip tetra is known for nipping other fish's fins. for gourami since they usually swim rather slow, in my opinion any fin nipping type species can be lethal for them.
I am new to the hobby and am upgrading to a 20 gallon. Would you recommend a couple of these for a newbie and what would be appropriate to keep with them in a 20?

I love honeys, they always look like they're waiting for something
Ha ha... waiting for something 😹😹
Love these. They are often overlooked in the LFSs because they are small and drab until taken home and cares for proper. Thanks for a great video.
I saw you at the Aquatic Experience Expo this weekend, but was too shy to bug you while you were setting up your aquascape. Maybe next year. 😝
+Jay Workman aww, you should have. Next time for sure

I love Gourami all species stunning little fish as always great informative video.
Really nice fish indeed and very nicely explained as always Rachel 🤗🤗🤗

Yes

The fins on these fish are amazing
I'm dying to get a small group of female sunset honeys for my tank, buy I'm not sure how to sex them when they're more brightly coloured
when i was hanging out at the fish store earlier i was playing with the honey gouramis
if i'd point to a spot on the tank they'd swim up to my finger and like high five me with their pectoral fins
i fell in love
i already thought they were pretty but oh my god they're so interactive and adorable too!
can't decide whether to get one with a school of glowlight tetras and some corys
or just get a group of gouramis...

I am going to buy some in a few days!!
thank you for all the good information😃

No not really

do they get along with corydoras?

I've got the flame one.it's a nice bright red color and goes very well with my neons and skirt tetras.in my 20 long.
Hope you are doing good!
hi. just got a pair of sunset thick lip gouramis. I'm in love. uploading a vid tomorrow. what tank mates can I keep with them if I want to raise the fry in a 65g

+Christopher Jones you do t need to introduce them at the same time
I am wanting to add orange sakura shrimp to my honey gourami tank. Can I do it successfully and how?
Do you have any videos on Pearl Gouramis?
No. Sorry
Hey Rachel what do you think about putting 30 of them in a 55 with another 30 silver tips or rasboras?
silver tip tetra is known for nipping other fish's fins. for gourami since they usually swim rather slow, in my opinion any fin nipping type species can be lethal for them.
Michael Tette deff have a lot of plants for hiding from each other
+Michael Tette I would probably do 20 and then a small rasbora school
I am new to the hobby and am upgrading to a 20 gallon. Would you recommend a couple of these for a newbie and what would be appropriate to keep with them in a 20?
+skinsgirl3 they are excellent beginner fosh. Some small rasboras or danios and some kuhlis loaches would be a fun active tank
Rachel O'leary EXCELLENT! Thank you...I am in love with this hobby and have learned so much from your videos!
+skinsgirl3 glad to hear it :)
Will Honey Gourami live ok with Dwarf Gourami?
Hi,can honey gouramis be brackish,or freshwater only,i have some plans for brackish tanks, but there are no place about their water type,i guess.
FW only
Thanks alot
I hope your travels have gone well Rachel. Did you place well in the #aquascaping contest?
Today's question would be, where, and with whom can I get two pairs of breedable #Colisa Fasciata or banded gouramis??? 20 years ago I could find em in Woolworths, and almost any store for $2-$4 bucks, now all other variety of gouramis are available except this quite beautiful species!!! Any info is appreciated.😉😎👍🖖
We won people;s choice. Not sure! I cna look fro them though :)
Rachel O'leary #awesomesauce!!! Just ran into Corey from #AquariumCoop in #Seattle, he gave it a thumbs up, too!😉😊
Yes if you could look into acquiring a few pairs domestically that would be swell. My contact here in Washington says he only gets imports from #Thailand once every 3 months, timing that sucks!
All the best,
Cheers,
Michael
Can you make a vid about chocolate gouramis
When will these be for sale? are they the true honey dwarfs or are they the sunset dwarfs and variations of this?
+Bill M they are true dwarf and are available now
Rachel O'leary are the honey gouramis you have the wild type? My female honey doesn't really have the black line. She's a softer yellow than my male. And my male dwarf has some yellow/orange on his dorsal but his black goatee isn't completely black just dark splotches. Still I love my honeys 😊
Could I just move the fry instead of the gouramis? And what would happen if I don’t seperate them after they breed?
Yes. You can move fry. If you don't separate them they will probably be eaten
Rachel O'leary thank you for your quick response!
will they fight like bettas if I keep only males? I don't want to have any fish babies in my aquarium. Will it be safe to house only males?
I know this was a month ago, but yes they might fight. They may breed in a regular aquarium, but eggs and fry won't survive so don't worry about it.
what is the reccomended tank size for these doods
20 and up
I have honey gourami which have just laid eggs, do you remove yours from the main tank? I've got shrimp snails thick lipped gourami honey gourami and a BN pleco in there, will they be safe with these species?
+aliciacb8284747274 I would remove the eggs
Rachel O'leary thank you 😊
Will they do well with guppies?
Yes, most likely. Little known secret- I have never kept a guppy.
Can we get an update on the apistogramma red flash fry?
+Sotdot they got eaten
Rachel O'leary Oh no!
+Noah Bretches I was traveling when they became free swimming :(
i have one 1.5" male at present, in compamy with cardinals, oto's, marbled hatchets, whiptail catfish, a bamboo shrimp, amano's, juvenile harlequins who move like lightening at feed time and two siamese algae eaters that have grown from 0.75" to 2.5" in just 2 months they arw obsessed with chasing each other at high speed, the point being the gourami takes not one scrap of notice and does a fair bit of algae eating to boot. one of the sae's will have to go i think before they fet much bigger,
but at present they all seem to rub along quite nicely. thank you for the sexing advice, i hall be loking for females now, gourami's that is.
Another gourami species I'm sure you'll enjoy, Sphaerichthys Vaillanti.. female shows the excellent colors in breeding dress unlike the others.
Can it live in 10 gallon tank
Yes it can
Thanks 💕💖💞🥰
Are red honeys just as peaceful. I had issues with a dwarf gourami with my panda cories in my 10g and got a red honey and am a little worried
No too worried. Just would like to make sure everything is okay
Yep go for it.
I just got one and he is so shy that he is not eating. Any ideas?
give it a bit of time!
Did you loose weight because you look so much thinner😍😍😍
can i have guppy With this fish?? Nice video btw :)
+stoffe 97 yes
Chain loaches!!! ❤
I lubb you. Smart, competent, boss bitch. I plan on replicating your river tank in some fashion. Tank goals, my friend. Keep up the good work!
+Danielle Saunders thanks!
I keep a pair of gourami and male always pushing away female, so peaceful, she always hungry never see her eat, but she still poop that means she eat something.
