- Have you ever drank automatically without thinking about it and later you can't understand why you did this? In this clip I'm analyzing a personal story where I drank automatically and I explain what may have been going on in my brain.
Listen to episode 182 to learn more about why you may drink automatically. Takeaways:
-Our behavior is controlled by two systems in the brain: the goal-directed circuit and the habitual automatic circuit.
-Habits are formed through repetition and conditioned cues, and can override our goal-directed processes.
-Cravings and stimulus-response associations play a significant role in our drinking behavior.
-Seeking support and taking action are crucial in breaking free from automatic loops and overcoming urges to drink.

All of the information description in this video is my opinion and my understanding of the research. This is not medical advice.
Good advice Gillian, thank you. Too many times have I woke up with a hangover and not able to do things I really wanted to do the next day. This podcast helps me understand the compulsion to drink more than I want. And I've found controlled or moderated drinking takes more work and discipline than just stopping entirely; the buzz with the first drink decreases my commitment to moderate, making it too easy to reach for the next drink. I'm reading the book "Atomic Habits" and working on eliminating the old habit of using alcohol and creating new habits to replace it, habits that I find enjoyable, interesting, productive. Best regards.
100% agree with you. It takes so much effort to try to control it and it’s really not worth it in the end. I’m so glad you’re doing well and thank you for watching!
Time and time again I thought I could moderate after a sobriety stint. I have come to the realization that it is just not possible.
That’s a very powerful realization. Once I got there I was finally free. I’m happy for you
My last milestone was 9 December. That was three months sober, so I guess I have to set new milestones, six and nine months.
Today was my wife’s birthday and everybody was drinking, so that was a bit hard. I like watching you and your vlogs. They really support my sober power. Okay, 9 March and 9 June next….
Happy 3 months! All of my milestones were on the 9th too. That does sound hard to be at a party where everyone is drinking but you, but you did it!! I hope you feel proud of that
