I quit drinking for many years but I’m afraid that it is slipping back into my life. In the period i went sober i was not going out , i was practicing my instrument. I had a goal in music but after many years that dream is starting to blur out a bit. My social life was non existent. I knew the people I’m surrounded by aren’t the healthiest but i almost never meet people who aren’t drinking or doing drugs… it’s everywhere!! So yeah I slipped up again at a festival. It’s so weird i hate drinking but in a way I enjoy it because it turns me into a more social creature, it makes me enjoy the moment more. Not over analyzing everything… but i know that there is a downfall afterwards so yeah. I’m going to stop again because I really hate the hangovers. It makes me more anxious and it hits my confidence a lot afterwards. I don’t care if my social life sucks, my health is more important !! I have to believe in higher powers to get en back on track quitting this bad habit!!

I tried a 0% beer and I didn't care for the feeling. I also realized that I don't really like the taste of beer. I only drank them for the buzz. I prefer that drink other non alcoholic beverages that are not mimicking alcohol. I also find non alcoholic beer, wines and spirits to be way too expensive. You can't even enjoy the financial benefits of not buying alcohol if you start the habit of drinking these NA beverages. To each their own. I just think these drinks still glorify drinking alcohol.

I couldn't moderate my amount of alcohol once I started. I went from sober to blackout, no inbetween. The endorphines were all consuming for me. I loved the high. I would go out to get drunk, never to just have 1 or 2 drinks. An off switch didn't exist for me, and I too had to finish all the alcohol before I could go home. Last orders I would order 2 double spirits and a beer and a shot just because the bar was closing. I am sober 3 years. I still feel boring but its something i can live with.

Thanks for bringing attention to this issue. A lot of information about new found (year-ish) sobriety is confusing and nebulous. One hears a lot of anecdotal stories about "relapse gets worse each time", but it's hard to have it sink in without your podcasts bringing attention to studies and your matter-of-factness explanations. Relapse is serious stuff and deceptively dangerous - it's disheartening it's not more well known and explained. Thanks for adding to the collective knowledge and bringing light to a very dark topic.

Very normal! I hope you’ll check out the episode I referenced about what to expect emotionally in early sobriety. Being cranky is so common! And happy day 30!

11 months AF with one small relapse 4 months ago and still EXTREMELY fatigued. I have had my thyroid and b12 checked without issues, sleep study done with no sleep issues. I am just now getting to the point where I am having dreams again. And they are normal dreams. I have NOT had even 1 dream about drinking. I used to be a dreamer, almost every night. For the past 7+ years have not been dreaming at all. I finally started dreaming again abt 4 weeks ago but they were just every now and then. I am not getting to where i am dreaming atleast every other night. I wonder, since I am starting to dream again, if my sleep is stabilizing and my fatigue will eventually go away? Anyone have any idea?

I’m at 6 months sober and dealing with a similar issue. Just got all of my levels checked as well (Thyroid, testosterone, B and D levels, and a whole panel of other stuff). My cholesterol is down over 100 points, blood pressure is 106/60. My numbers couldn’t be better, yet I feel drained all the time. My doc doesn’t seem to know what to do either. Very frustrating.

You have to remember that this a a drug that has been ingrained in society since the dawn of agriculture. Would you try and moderate cocaine or meth use ? So you're maybe afraid of missing out on all the "good times"? Once I'd had a period of sobriety long enough for it to be the norm, I realised what a joy it was to stand outside this part of our culture. No longer part of it or trapped by it.

I am 11 months AF. Is it possible to take that long to begin sleeping normal?? I used to dream ALLLL THE TIME!!! I havent had a dream in 8+ years. About 3-4 weeks ago I actually started dreaming again. At first it wasnt often but it is getting where I am dreaming every other night. But even that I am dreaming, i am still EXTREMELY FATIGUED!! NEVER wake up rested. I struggle to wake up and brush my teeth but I force myself. I have had binge drinking issue for 10+ years. The last few years i only drank on the weekends but the entire time ive been drinking alcohol i would only drink at night, never during the day or morning. In fact i have never, not even once drink during the day. I have never had any withdrawal issues or anythinf. There have been many times I would go days without drinking and never had any issues. What got me was boredom. So I would go home every night and drink until i blacked out. For the past several years it has only been on the weekends tho. I have never needed alcohol during the day or anything like that and i always felt fine, other than being hung over from the night before. Since i started dreaming again a few weeks ago doesnt that mean my sleep might be starting to become normal? But dmn I have been AF for 11 months so i didnt think it would take that long? I cant figure out if my tiredness and other symptoms is due to the amount of years ive consumed alcohol or my adhd? I was medicated for ADHD up until the age of 18 and havent been taken meds for it since and i am now 38. I have tried to see doctors abt the adhd part but its always “i dont treat adult adhd bc its not a big deal” blah blah and they just kinda laugh it off. Sorry for the rant. But you think its possible for it to take 11 months for my sleep to begin to stabilize? I mean I am finally dreaming again, so I assume that means I am finally starting to sleep more normal? What you think? Btw, awesome content, youre awesome! I just now found you!

Great intro to the topic. I didn’t want to drink NA’s during the first year of sobriety but now I enjoy them on occasion.

Yes absolutely!! I'd wake up terrified after drinking it lead to a recent 6 day bender and now drinking isn't relieving the anxiety I just feel sick.... I've been here before its soooo bad the doom feeling I feel insane. It takes about 3 days and things lessen the anxiety goes down but goddddddd that's a long 3 days. Going through day 1 I feel you and the people in the comments.... I had a medication really help me in the past and surprisingly I could drink once or twice a week and get drunk and be OK... Well not no more either the med stopped or my anxiety depression got worse. Drinking is a disasssster for me... I'm friggen 34 and I use to be able to get help and see my mom and her doc and some quick benzos but now I don't have support and I been struggling alcohol but I'm out of money now so can't buy more I just got to white knuckle these 3 days.... Somehow! :(

Benzos are not a long term solution either because they are very addictive. Therapy to learn why you are so anxious and develop coping skills to manage it would be a better solution ❤️ if you listen to my podcast on Apple or Spotify episode 167 is about what to expect with your anxiety when you quit drinking. You mentioned the “Big Thing” on here. I’ve certainly seen that happen to many people in my life. Losing jobs, families, jail, health problems, etc. But, also not true for me, or many others I know. We decided to change for rational reasons before ever getting there. Watching others descend into Hell certainly helped. But, wasn’t all of it. As a business owner, it was a lot of social drinking during the week: client, referral partners, golf outings etc. And, on the weekends it was hanging with good friends, usually around sporting events. But, there was never a job-loss, a DUI, or a GF walking out because of drinking. As a life long athlete, and someone with business, financial, and travel goals, it was the awareness of how much it was getting in the way. Wanting to run a marathon, get down to 12% body fat, etc, and reading up on all the things alcohol does to destroy training results, and lower testosterone. The creeping awareness of how brain fog, and lack of good sleep was slowing down business and financial achievements. Knowing that in order to say “yes” to certain things necessitates saying “No” to others. The more I studied, and the more I thot, the more “No” was the only answer. I did 240 days without alcohol, combined with diet changes, ramped up exercise, and finally dealing with emotional sludge from my past instead of avoiding it, and I truly feel like I’m 25 again. Best of luck to all. Find your own way, and your own reasons…just get there...sooner rather than later. Keep preaching the message Gill.
