I've flown in Canada and US with the 55 and no issues ever, but I'm always a bit anxious lol. I do bring a compression strap and sometimes will cinch the bag with it a bit if it just "looks" too big. Staying under the radar of the gate team and in flight crew is key. If they see you bopping other passengers on the head as you walk the plane to your seat...you may get a tap on the shoulder.
The trapezoidal shape of these duffels accounts for why they pack way above their stated capacity and conform so easily to the inside shape of the overhead. You can EASILY take the 55L onboard.
The issue is not whether it fits the overhead bin. The issue is whether it fits the square measuring box they have at the gate. If the gate agent so much as suspects that you're an inch too large they will make you test it. U.S. carriers are a lot more lenient than European carriers. I wouldn't push it with an European carrier, especially one of the LCC's like Ryanair or Easy.
I am not sure that the 40L version fits if it is fully loaded, so it is useless to try with the 55L unless it is only half loaded, and in this case, the bag itself will takes place that is very limited (and it shrinks quite regurlarly). Most of the so called cabin bags are now not allowed for lots of companies, specially LCC.
Thanks for this video! I have the 55L and was debating whether I should get the 40L since I like to carry-on my luggage but I think I’ll stick with a 55L!
I have the 70L that I am looking to take for my next diving trip to Egypt. It’s truly a perfect bag. Light, strong, protect from elements, can be put as backpack for a short walk. I’ve recently bought a Stahlsac duffel 36L as a carry on. I plan to get a 55L for short trips
@@TreyDaze Thé 60L in second hand could be a great option too, as it seems better for carry on the airplane (even here in Europe, they request a max length of 55cm).
Thanks for testing this! Since you seem to be based in Germany, have you ever tried to carry-on the 55l on a german national or EU flight? The bag's size definitely exceeds the smaller/cheaper airlines' restrictions (e.g. 55 x 40 x 20 cm for carry-on with Ryanair)
i travel with the older 60L international and domestic numerous times. no problems ever! haven’t tried within Europe other than a short connection on aerlingus between ireland and belgium.
did you occasionally have to really shove it in there? i wanna get the 55 but we usually fly alaska and i think their dimensions are 14x9x22 and i know you can squish a duffel pretty well. just a bit nervous
I can confirm this. I had the older 60L for years but it was wearing out and looking bag (though functional) and Patagonia replaced it for me. They let me have the option of going up or down in size and I went down to the 55L to keep using it as a carry on and it's at least the same size or larger.
I have the 55L and I often fly Ryanair, I will book it as a priority two cabin bags and always wear the 55L as a backpack style and thankfully I have had no issues so far, normally when I'm depositing it into the overhead bin I get a look from the flight attendants but It fits in fine from back to front of the bin and actually takes up little room. Fingers crossed for more travelling with no issues!
Still working well for you @anglebars6084? The actual measurements for the checkbox are, according to a post I read online 212mm x 412mm x 580mm. The length of the Patagonia is off by a good bit but I find mine is very squishy so once you don't overpack it it's easy to manipulate to the size required.
Be great to see how the black holes have been holding up the the wear and tear of airports and baggage handlers and what you think of the wheeled black holes? Thanks 👍
My bags have no wear and tear on them and they’ve flown all over the place. They are absolute tanks! I’m on the hunt for a wheeled one…they’re just so damn hard to find!
Hey! Do you think you can fashion the backpack slings into a shoulder/messenger sling? I _really_ wanna like this duffel but want it to have full duffel capabilities
Have you ever attempted to try carrying on the 70L? I got that for Christmas and just went on a trip and I checked it just because i didn’t want them to turn me down but i saw people carrying on with bigger duffles!
I used the older 60L as a carry on in Asia for years and never had a problem. I haven't tried to 55L yet (though that's why I'm scrolling comments here).
I bought the 55L for carry on and the MLC Mini for a personal item. No more checking bags for international flights. I am not that fond of their new coating though.
Got one for Christmas and have been wondering about this - thanks for posting the info
Yas just what I needed 😁 Thank you for this!
No problem!

So does the 40L fit into the gate square measuring cage?
Yeah, he mentions this in the video.
Another great vid

No problem brother.
Thanks for the video! Looks like your shoulder straps are on the wrong side on your 40L. Hope it wasn't uncomfortable!

Nice! The 55L is a really solid middle point between 70L and 30L.

Yes! I’ve flown on KLM, EuroWings, and Sun Express with the 55L. I’m afraid to try Ryan Air lol.
I am looking for bag to fou with Ryanair économic flight it’s 40*20 , that goes under the seat and under 8kg .

I have the older 60L and bought the 55L for my wife recently. The 55L is oddly enough significantly larger.

I travel everywhere with just a small day bag u can buy stuff u need in any country

Munich! My hometown. Europe's only 5-Star airport. I love flying out of that place!
Best airport I’ve been to in Europe by far! Wish we had more time to actually spend in Munich!
Mine too 😊 and my absolute fav airport
You checked in the larger Black Holes, but the condition seems alright after retrieving it from the carousel. Not bad at all!
Oh yeah! These bags are indestructible.
Thanks for this video, I have an older patagonia 40L that I've used before, and wondering if I could get away with a bigger one as a carryon.
I carry on my 55L all the time in the US with no issues.
Hey man. How was the weather during your stay? In the news it looked like constant blizzard storms and - 100C° 😂
The weather was AWFUL!!! The cold instantly makes an exposed skin numb and freezing.
@@TreyDaze Damn 😂 But the best thing is, when you came back to germany, it must feel like summer here now.

100%
In reply to one of the comments on Patagonia website, they suggest u use one of the backpack straps extended all the way and across

If it’s not packed out…you can get on with it.
@@TreyDaze good to know!
👍
Thanks so much for testinf this. I live in asia and probably tje 40l is the safer option
Especially Cebu Airlines ;( haha

Hello, how are you? Do you know where I can buy the straps for the suitcase? Thank you
Most Patagonia locations sell the straps separately!
I bought the 55L for carry on and the MLC Mini for a personal item. No more checking bags for international flights. I am not that fond of their new coating though.
Nice!!! The new coating is definitely a little strange, but glad you were able to simplify your baggage situation.
I’ll test my 55L on 787 tomorrow =)
You’ll have plenty of space! Safe travels!
Any chance you’ve seen any with wheels? Doubtful but…
Those are harder to find than Jimmy Hoffa or the Lost City of Atlantis.
Have you tried this on ibaria or Lufthansa or United?
No issues on Lufthansa or United.
It’s not that the luggage won’t fit it’s just respect for everyone else who also needs to fit their luggage in the overhead.
U.S. allows for larger bags. The rest of the world does not.
