First heard this in 1969 in the pub in Croyden Surrey England when I was 16 doing a training course for the Midland Bank,I was with a group of other girls. One of my favourite songs ever. Jocelyn
I remember that this song was really controversial back then as ut was about a brothel called The house of the rising sun. As teenagers we had no idea we just loved it for Eric, the music and tempo and still do.
What an awesome piece of footage, made before release in both the UK and 2 months later in the US where it was Number One for three weeks! Talk about out of left field for 1964, this song was beautifully arranged by the boys, recorded in 15 minutes - as Mickie Most said, he didn't need to produce very much at all, the Animals had done a superb arrangement themselves. Classic! (Great seeing diddy David Hamilton as a youth!)
I am always impressed by how professional and quick thinking Eric is when asked goofy questions by the emcees of these shows. He never flinched, stays calm and gives a short answer to any question. He seems to be ready for anything no matter how ridiculous the question is or comment by emcee.
This is great footage from the early sixties ,being born in the late fifties we were spoiled by quality groups and solo singers we had a great time growing up with all these quality bands.
I’m transported straight back to the day this was released and you could see it on your very own black and white telly. They were there at the beginning and god bless them. No one had heard anything like it. The last time I saw Eric Burden was at Hyde Park singing Paint It Black and I seem to remember Canned Heat played there as well. Those were the days when music was real!

But songs like these are still going strong 60 years later & will keep going fir decades to come!!!

This and “We gotta get outta this place” we’re our anthems in Vietnam. It was brutal however we hung on because of songs like these. Oh how I miss them and my comrades that didn’t make it back in one piece.
What a fun video that was to watch! Very historical. Just before their first huge hit of "The House of the Rising Sun". They were lip syncing to the recording, of course, but that was very typical for TV in the 60s.
Thank you for this classic video. I'm reading James "Tappy" Wright's (the Animals Road Mgr. back in the early 60's) book & he describes these very early days of the Animals. He tells how they recorded this song on 1 take when their recording manager (Micky Most) went to the bathroom. Eric wanted to record it really bad, so they did in under 5 minutes. He also talks how fast the song became #1 in the Britain & then in the USA it hit #1 in September 1964. The next month, The Animals made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The rest is history.... If anyone is interested, the book is titled "Rock Roadie".
lI've always wanted to check that book out, I should just order it. I have read Sean Egan's book about the Animals. Probably the most thorough story of the band. Eric Burdon's book is entertaining but you wonder how well he's remembering and the time-line is all over the place from what I remember.
@@chrisnicini834 I saw them at Southampton Gaumont the evening after they'd recorded this in London in the small hours. That was on the Chuck Berry tour. I'd be surprised if this was as late as late July 64, as I saw them on (I think) Whit Monday, 18th May. Unforgettable. Eric in full acne in a Royal Stuart tartan jacket, like -- Chas Chandler said -- an apoplectic beetroot on a pogo-stick :-) They had a reputation for being quite menacing, but they were all grinning away, except Eric, who was a bit scary. I'm sure that's true about a one-take recording. They recorded their first album in two hours! Basically, they just went in and played through their stage set and went off to the pub.
