Sohyang gave it her own special twist and turned it into the incredible performance you witnessed. She is absolutely phenomenal.
Arirang has a special place for Korean people it's somewhat like a national anthem. And with So Hyang's voice it becomes perfect 👌🏻

From vocal pedagogy perspective, it's not just about the range, just as much as it's not just about the belting/mixing, like many diehard Dimash/Sohyang fans would like to think. The verdict is Dimash is like a high class buffet, while Sohyang is like a Michelin 3-star restaurant. Luckily, since singing is an artform, it's meant to be enjoyed subjectively, not through objective evaluation. Hence, I like them both.
Sohyang's arrangement turn this traditional Korean folk song into an epic saga that takes you through the history of Korea that included foreign invasion and wars, as well as people longing for peaceful unification. It is a magical and transcendent performance that bind human hearts.

I am an old man of 68 years and Sohyang history grab me more.She is a cancer-survivor, she arranged all songs by herself and she teaches music. She sings to help people with their sorrows and she don't sing for fame or money. OMG !!

I was introduced to Sohyang a few years ago through her 'King of Mask Singer' performances. I was spellbound from the first note, even though I couldn't understand a word she was saying. The emotion just shines through and grabs you, even more so after finding a subtitled version. At some point, you need to check those out if even just for your own enjoyment. 'Breathe', 'Hug Me', 'Home', 'Mona Lisa', and 'Day Day' are just a few of my favorites from her run on the show. Today, I am captivated by her series of appearances on a show called 'Begin Again'. The performances are all stripped down, acoustic, busking concerts for the public at random places featuring several artists. Her versions of 'I will Always Love You' and 'If I ain't Got You' are stellar as are 'Love Poem' and 'Back In Time'.

Well in my opinion sohyang is sohyang and dimash is dimash, each has their own plus minus. Dimash has unbelievably wider range , and his performance will wow you, he's a superstar. While on the other side, sohyang although her range is not as wide as dimash but hers is cleaner and perfect, her performance might not be as flamboyant or dramatic as dimash, but her singing soothes you, maybe because of her life experience, her belief and her intention to sing, to make people happy, her singing has some depth. both are world class calibre, it depends on your taste and mood actually. I love both of them. Sometimes I need dimash (when i feel like i wanna be wow-ed and watch good performance) sometimes i go to sohyang (when I need some healing and positivity)

Well, Dimash is a very good singer as Sohang does. but they both are very different in the view of multi-dimensional emotion and feeling. Sohang's performance is more focused on comforting people and healing. The people who like Sohyang are coming back to Sohyang's performance to get healed not listening to her high pitch. That's a reason why her performance is so much addictive. NO WAY to escape her. lol For me, i have been caught for the last 12 years.
She's one of my favourite female singers. We can't say she's the female Dimash, he can do her part and more, while she can't do his male part (socks still safe) and some other things he does. But anyways, imagine if they sang together. 🤯
But that aside, yes, you are right, this song is a sort of a national anthem, about the unification of the North and the South. She wears traditionals clothes too. Apart from this message, the music arrangement, and her voice and control, so beautiful. She's amazing.

As for singing, I don't know who is better and who am I to judge. What I can say is, I listen with my heart for Sohyang and with my ears for Dimash.
We all have heard of Dimash singing and we know his vocal capabilities. But Sohyang is the one that makes me have chills and goosebumps every time, and even teared up occasionally on sad ballads.

Nah. She can't do half of the things he does. He has the advantage of being male and of having longer cords than usual. He masters a way bigger range. Besides, he covers more genres and has the best breath control I've ever seen.
