    Thanks for the video. I like the music on its own but it is way too loud while you are talking.
    After looking at the time it took you to clean and prepare the cover I'm thinking I'll just buy the $48 kit that completely replaces the cover, gasket, and bolts with new. Mine is rusty anyway and I'm not sure I want to mess with the old one.

    The 09 Avalanche calls for 75W-90 gear oil for the rear differential and 80W-90 for the front according to the owner's manual.

      You should generally always go with the manufacturer's recommended specifications. However depending on your driving style and environment, one or the other may be better suited for your unique needs. Could you get away with either of the two? Granted that that is all you have, probably, as it shouldn't be too big of an issue. Before the vehicle gets up to a hotter temperature , one oil would be lighter, and the other would heavier, in terms of viscosity.

      Some do not have the drain plug in the bottom, in that case you need to pull the cover. Mine has a drain plug so I don’t pull the cover but eventually the covers rust out - at that point I get a genuine GM cover as it comes with a new gasket, bolts, and bracket for the brakeline

Also, I know the manufacturers vary on their terminology, however by engineering definition, a bolt has an external nut associated with it, while a screw is fastened into internal threads within the material that is being fastened. So by that definition, I am not wrong in calling your "bolts" screws. fastenerengineering.com/what-is-a-bolt/

      True point. On a substantive issue, I would strongly advise against spraying solvent into any differential case. If someone watching this does, then be darn sure its evaporated, and there's not a pool in the bottom of the pumpkin before reinstalling. The residual will mix with and ruin your new gear oil -- and gears eventually.

    • @andycaldwell4828
      @andycaldwell4828  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, well, there is no "pumpkin" contour. Fluid runs right out byway of gravity. And contact cleaner generally takes all but 5 seconds to evap.

      Machine thread screws, or machine screws. Sorry, I'm was a machinist by trade, not a mechanic. Bolts usually have a separate removable nut associated with them, and also bolts are generally tightened byway of that removable female nut - not by the male bolt. Anyway, if you ever have to order any "bolts," like the ones here in this video, they are usually listed as machine screws. www.hunker.com/13415397/what-is-a-machine-screw

    Don't put silicone on any housings mating surface. Only ever on the covers mating surface. 30ft-lbs is plenty of strength to prevent a leak on a gasket. Sport bike cylinder heads are torqued to 35ft-lbs and they can resistant head lift at 13k rpms. Silicone is completely unnecessary.
