      Prior to D&D 5e Gnoll were usually villains, but existed some examples of adventurous or even heroic ones. Gnolls are opportunistic hunters and have a bad habit of bullying others to reach their goals, which usually involve eating. If memory serves me right in the supplement handbooks Unapproachable East and Races of the Wild, back in the good ol' times of 3.5, there were the stats and infos needed to create a Gnoll character. This trend continued in the infamous 4.0e, then came 5e and Gnolls became like they are now.

    So given that Gnoll are based on hyena I like to imagine that the only reason he's so healthy looking, and not looking like a necromancers servant, is that after he was bumped from the pack she found him, and now to pay back taking care of him he helps in the forge. Ergo- healthy happy Gnoll

    • @Prince_Smugarina
      @Prince_Smugarina 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, thats pretty close to what probably happened. Gnolls born of a Hyena, which is just... disgusting, are basically doomed to be bound by their Creator God Yeenoghu, who causes them to suffer from an endless hunger.
      The Gnolls born from actual reproduction, however, can miraculously be born free of the Evil God's influence, but the ones who are, are generally euthanized in a vicious, cannibalistic fashion. Its only those lucky to survive that can go on to be like the Gnoll in this comic. Should he be lucky to find another Gnoll like himself, they could theoretically make a family line of Gnolls who are NOT bound to the Evil God.

    There are, in fact, very rare Gnolls who refuse the nature Yeenoghu instilled in his monsters. Invariably, they are always at least second-generation born between Gnolls rather than from the ruptured 'egg' of an overstuffed Hyena. Often they are eaten by their pack, but the rarer few manage to escape.

    • @aRandomFox00

      @@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei In Eberron, gnolls have the free will to be whatever alignment they want like all other sapient races of the material plane. Most of them are still warlike savages. Not because a god said so, however, but simply because that's the culture they grew up in, living in remote tribes in undeveloped wildlands where it's survival of the fittest. Doesn't help that the behaviour is reinforced by stereotypes held by others, and by the warlords who use them as soldiers and fodder.
      But if a gnoll were to venture out of their homelands and was willing to be open-minded to other cultures, there is nothing stopping one from learning to be more civilised.

      In my homebrew setting, Gnolls are a reproducing species just like most folk. Yeenoghu followers, corrupted and mutated by demonic energy, are an aberration brought on by consuming the flesh of a sapient being. And then only as a step on the road of corruption; it lets Yeenoghu get a foothold, but you have to pursue cannibalism as a lifestyle. Some Gnolls will eat dead people in times of extreme need (and Gnolls have strong stomachs, so they can eat lots of meat other creatures never could), or as part of funerary practices among their own. Untainted Gnoll culture usually has rites and cleansing rituals done before and/or after situational cannibalism, to ward off Yeenoghu's influence or purify themselves. Some Gnolls will even swear Paladin oaths, questing to redeem themselves for eating a person.
      Demonically corrupted Gnolls are what you find in the Monster Manual. Deranged and voracious cannibals, who feed on people in ever more extreme acts of paradoxically primal, ritualized violence. All to gain Yeenoghu's favor and to abate the demon lord's hunger projected on them. Acquiring demonic "gifts" in the form of foul mutations and increased size. (PC Gnolls are generally closer to humans in height). And performing foul rites to summon lesser demons and animate the stripped bones of their dead kin.
      I'm not opposed to the idea of demonic Gnolls using a special rite to create more of them from overfeeding a hyena, as described in 5e. But I see that as more of a shortcut or stopgap measure to shore up numbers. Even these debased Gnolls still reproduce in the "normal" way (albeit their relationships are more toxic as a rule). Their children grow up abused and forced to fend for themselves until strong enough to join the pack (after a dangerous and cruel coming-of-age trial, of course). Where they're made to eat man-flesh (or whoever's handy) and inducted into Yeenoghu's worship.

    Funny Thing: I know of an online artist who has come up with how own 'head canon' for why Dwarven females are always mistaken for Males.
    First: they do grow their head hair long and braided, but when they go out in 'public, they often tie the braids underneath their chin, making it look like they have a beard (didn't one of the twins in the last "How To Train Your Dragon' do this? 😅)
    Second, and I stress for HIS dwarven canon (and this comic, it seems 😏), they do indeed get 70s down there, including the braiding. When wearing pants, this could produce a noticeable bulge in the crotch area, thus enhancing the 'masculine' look.....if anyone were looking that hard, of course
    😂

    • @AnkhAnanku
      @AnkhAnanku 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +100

      In my head-canon you can tell the difference because lady dwarves can grow sideburns and beards but almost never mustaches. For them, shaving one’s chin or cheeks instead of growing it all out full and lavish is a cycling beauty standard same as us with skinny/thicc bodies or bold/subtle cosmetics.
      My other favorite is like your first idea where lady dwarves style their side locks so that it joins together and hangs under their jaw in a way that looks like a beard. It could be considered especially cheeky if she leaves a little gap so you can see her smooth jawline while the “beard” dangles freely.
      I don’t think any of these ideas are mutually exclusive for worldbuilding cultures. I might steal your “bushy packers” idea for some dwarven subgroup where they are particularly masc presenting

    • @SmolTerribleTornado
      @SmolTerribleTornado 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My headcanon is female dwarves use fake beards to purposefully handicap every single task so the skills and knowledge can still be passed down to the kids even if all the adult male dwarves die or go missing, like how to perfectly smith anything while drunk without turning into a fucking living torch because your beard was all soaked with mead like a sponge with ethylene and caught on fire because a little spark flew a little to close to your face.

    • @konradwright7725
      @konradwright7725 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +73

      In my head cannon: There are no female dwarves (technically no male ones either) while they work, they spore like mushrooms and another dwarf collects spores in his beard and dwarves grow like a fungus in that beard using it as a substrate. Both mushrooms and dwarves have very complicated underground networks. So that’s how I flavor it!

      When would it be more effective to use an axe or a hammer? Knights, other cavalrymen, sailors make great use of all kind of swords and sabers, don't they?

    • @blackmark2899
      @blackmark2899 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Briselance It depends. There are extremely few situations where a sword is the preferred weapon in battle. The polearm reigns supreme. Some sailors would have swords yes but an axe is way more useful in day to day operations. Especially one tailor made for sailors but that is usually trumped as well by a well made and sharpened knife. Unless we're talk pirates which loved the cutlass (if records are to be believed). Knights and Cavalry usually only had a sword as their last line of defense as a weapon or to show off status. In both cases, a polearm is the most preferred weapon in battle, followed by something that can inflict blunt force trauma be it an axe or hammer.

    • @everythingsalright1121
      @everythingsalright1121 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Briselance Throughout history the popularity of the sword has shined and waned. At a baseline, swords are, well, very basic. They do their job, but nothing else.
      Polearms, especially variants of spear, typically were the first pick when it came to medieval weaponry, from the samurai in Japan in the 1400s to European knights. Simply put, the spear is more versatile. It has more reach, it's cheaper to manufacture, it can be thrown depending on the design, it can be used defensively to set up a line of spearmen to deter a charge, but most importantly, it was easy to train someone to use it. Proper swordplay takes months if not years of mastery, and on the chaos of a battlefield, most formal training goes out the window. But a pointy stick? We've been using those since the dawn of civilization. It's easy to teach someone how to stab with a spear and some basic defensive techniques using the shaft. Spears were also still useful on horseback to boot. When things got really up close a spear was often dropped for a backup weapon, a sword or one of the following. Even in peaceful areas, you'd likely see a town guard using a halberd more than a sword, because 1) it's visually imposing, serving as a deterrent 2) it's long shaft can be used to block access/push people when multiple are used together horizontally and 3) they're useful for firefighting in a pinch, as they have an axe head and long reach.
      Axes and war hammers aren't quite up to the same level of advantages and disadvantages as spears, but the biggest reason to use one was again ease of training. Most people know how to swing an axe or a hammer or have done so at some point, and they're also cheaper to make than a sword which requires a significant amount of time to get the blade right (metal composition, filing, bevels, etc). Of course a hammer or an axe isn't as easy to defend with compared to a sword, but again, the ease of use is a big factor here, and they also could deal with armor better than slashing swords, which had to change to become stabbing swords in order to deal with advancements in armor (at least in Europe). Of course it's a bit harder to use an axe or a hammer on horseback...
      Of course, even with all these other weapons, swords were still widely used, but the popular notion that swords far outweighed any other weapon in use is a bit false. Swords were often a sign of wealth due to the amount of time that could be spent on making one, which is why many ceremonial swords from centuries ago still exist today, because they were more of a status symbol than ones meant to be used and lost in a battlefield. Like today however, there were still plenty of cheap swords and armor in circulation no matter where you went, cause people had to pay for their own gear most of the time.
      As blackmark2899 above me has said, your situation can matter too. For a boarding party on a pirate ship, axes and slashing swords would be more useful and wieldy than a spear of course due to the tight quarters and the multitude of ropes that one could use a hacking weapon to cut.
