Wizards just keep evil books and orbs lying around to be tampered with. Honestly, I've met two wizards that actually bothered to keep it save Neloth from Elderscrolls and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings.

He thought that it would stay hot and he could make his own hotspring back at home.

Maybe the guild was paid by someone to open the portal and the guild didn't want to have to pay a crew to open it so they sent a team to do a job they knew the crew would fail at and hoped that based on previous actions that they would open the portal on accident. So at the end of it all the crew failed so you don't have to pay them and the employer is happy because the portal is open meaning the guild keeps the full payment.
I told my players that for a change of pace, they weren't allowed to play human-like characters. They all chose Kobolds, and to torture me they're all rogues except for one who is a ranger. As you may guess, yes their chosen medium animal was a Pteranodon. It's great watching these idiots go on the dumbest oceans -47 heists, and instruct some flying reptile to carry out a bag of whatever they thought was valuable. Instead of defeating bag guys, they HEAVILY inconvenience them via stealth. Have plans to overtake the city in your secret cult hidey hole? Four somewhat smart lizard of varying color come in, stealth around, steal the sacred scroll you need, and then vanish leaving a calling card of ONE COPPER COIN. It's the most fun I've had as a DM in years. I'm constantly trying to find ways to screw over my players, and they just disarm all my traps, sneak past the guards. OR convince the guards they're a big lizard, and not smart. They literally SPOKE to a guard, and informed them that they were just a fat lizard. I can't man.
And to this day, I'm still wracking my brain on how Blizzard looked at a race of cute, mini-dragons and thought, "Hey! Let's turn them into rats obsessed with candles!"
Why do i have a feeling this might lead to a massive adventure, the kobolds just leave, then our heros show up were they close the portal, the wizard see the heros as part of a great prophecy, even do the konolds might have lead to having the wrong heros chosen
I kid you not, I've been wanting a game with numerous heist quests while you can customize yourself to be either a monster race or humanoid race, with a selection of classes to choose from, and your entire goal is to get the objective and escape with your lives, much like a tabletop campaign with all the bells and thrills ❤😂
Well, Thri-Kreens are an official Monster race, if that's what you mean. And I think Kobolds are also humanoids, right? But it is an official race, too, according to Volo's Guide to Monsters.
Kobolds are anything but stupid. They are actually quite clever, live about twice as long as a human barring violent death, and assuming you can explain why they would leave their tribe make excellent rogues.
I think the character designers for baldur's gate 3 took inspiration from this video. after the point of no return at the end of the game there's a kobold vendor you talk to named Koll the red. and he wears a leather mask just like that one in this video.

i belief the rat-doglike appearance is closer to the original European folklore, which i think the tiny cute mini dragons are far superior

It is more correctly then turning them into Lizardmen or dragonmen.
The doglike appearance is more accurate to lore, but kinda uninspired in this day and age. So make them...dragon dog men!
