Instead of trying to imagine where the +12 fret would be, you could just find the midpoint of the bridge and the fret you're playing. The one octave higher pinch harmonic is always halfway between the bridge and the played fret.
Also when hitting a note lower on the fretboard Eric will pinch the harmonic 24 frets above, which can also be found as in Mr7Kostas’ tip, but you eyeball the midpoint between the bridge and the note 12 frets above the one you’re playing. It’s really cool because you hear the fundamental and the harmonic not one but two octaves above it.
Dear guitar dad. How are you? Mom said that she misses you and my guitar step-dad isn't living up to her standards any longer, and he started drinking. So I'm writing to you hoping I could get some help on that sweet tone, so I can help guitar mom in this trying time. Sincerely A huge fan of your work
Excellent lesson. One way to "calculate" the pick position for the octave-up harmonic is to eyeball half of the distance between the fretted note and the bridge. The octave will always be halfway of where you are. Just the way I like to do it
777Jonathan777, Exactly!!! I often just tap half the distance to get a faux harmonic. My first visit here and I subscribed. Excellent subject matter and explanations. Nice hat tip to Troy Grady too.
As a 50 year old guitarist who finally decided to get serious about learning (maybe A day late.dollar short) but thank you for workshop , freakin awesome , well.done

Wow, have done pinch harmonics but never knew where you it it on the string (12 up example) was a thing! That alone was worth the price of admission! Thanks!
great playing. Many do understand Troy Grady's contribution. I was an early teen when YJM and EJ came to rule. I eventually became a classical professor. It was a high point for me when grady made perfect sense of it. Peace Subscribed and liked!
Cracking the Code got me over a 20 year wall. So many right handed guitar players forget about their right hand, once they no longer need to watch it. That's how you grow bad habits while digging holes beneath your feet. It's how muscle memory overcomes thinking and melody. The goal is to produce your own melodic sound, with creativity and without the limits of repetitive patterns. You do that by thinking ahead. That's impossible with repetitive muscle memory patterns. Of course you must learn your scales but the result is that you sound like you, and it's good. 🎸💨
Troy always reminds me of Michael Fox in back to the future and the whole cracking the code series kind of does too lol it helped me more than I thought possible. Thanks for this Ben, inspiring as usual.
Great lick that really encapsulates EJ's sound and ergonomics. Love your style of teaching and how you focus on the importance of the often overlooked right hand. This channel is oddly the only one I still have a notification bell enabled for.
I had the same experience with the G3 video (vhs at the time). Never heard of Eric until then, but was very impressed with his tone and articulation. Thanks for the video man!
Nice lesson🎶🙌 I always try to make a fuzz face style distortion while playing a strat and roll off tone bridge tone and maybe add a little chorus, I think that's a common EJ tone
I've been playing for so many years but learning this stuff has always stopped me from progressing. My speed and left right coordination is just not there. Your vids make me want to try again man thanks.
Superb... Love you're approach, application of techniques and the whole discourse around the style... Also I wish to mention that how wonderful you're Vito Bratta lesson for white lion's song Wait is too... You rock big time....that solo is one of the most magical and lyrical one... Cheers mate
Hey Uncle Ben, I just want to say that I love your work, and maybe I have a challenge for you. In my opinion, Mike Oldfield is one of the most underrated guitarists of our time, I am in love with his long suites (not the cheesy 80's short pieces...), his taste and playing style. I was amazed by the guitar solos in Incantations when I was a kid, but after years, I still cannot figure out rightly the solo in "Part Three", the One that begins around the minute three and twentyfive. If you help me, I will give you my mum. She's short and ugly, but she can wash clothes like no others. Cheers from Italy :) Ciao.
Uncle Ben! I was wondering why I hadn't heard from you in a while and then I discovered that TH-cam automatically unsubscribed me from your channel! I've heard a lot about this happening to other people but this is the first time it's actually happened to me!
I'm sure it's been said below in the comments, but the easier way to think of it is that you are trying to split the length from the bridge to the fingered note. Derp.
Damn good Uncle Ben! That 9th is going to light up every time I hear it now. I hadn't paid attention to it before, but now that you pointed it out, its undeniable.
This rocks and you rock! I don’t have a kemper and was curious what the time settings were? Sounds heavy in bass and mid, but I have no idea how to balance them for an EJ sound. Hear a bunch of reverb and light chorus, but I would love to add another channel to my Vypyr. Thanks for the lessons!
yo! man EJ's tone is very very particular. Andy Wood dials it in better than anyone. Use a low gain Marshall type sound with VERY little treble. Boost with a pedal also set with very low treble. His sound is really smooth.
Pretty sure that octave artificial harmonic you (and Eric) use to accent phrases is found halfway between the fret in question and the saddle the same way a "natural" open-string harmonic is found at the 12th fret? (Oh, just noticed Mr7Kostas has already pointed this out below).
Ben, i have a request. Please make how to play Elder - Dead roots stiring. This song has tons of good riffs, and it's hard for me to learn in by the ear, there are many spots where (i think) song switches it's tonation. maybe i am wrong, but also solo parts are quite complex. think about it :P
Uncle Ben!!! Killer tutorial! Just wondering if you have something shoved in the body cavity of that guitar? I'm thinking about switching to a hollow body just to have a lighter guitar for gigs
Ben Eller thanks for replying! Totally answered my question! I really dig your channel. I'm still working on developing my overall playing and you've given me a ton to work on!
hey ben eller!!-is that a daddario nylpro 1.4mm pick?? im curious because i recently tried them out and im actually diggin them.!! -cheers bro!! Keep the tutorial the vids coming!!
jaxon batts that is correct! One of my favorite mass produced picks ever. I prefer the green ones, but the blues sound more like EJ’s preferred red jazz 3 material.
Great info as always, Ben! May I ask what profile you are using in this one? I’m looking for an EJ tone for my Kemper and the one you’re using sounds great.
Nice little Pentatonic/Alternate Picking Exercise. But honestly, it's a little too Space Galaxy Pornsluts for my musical tastes. Even if it would be great intro music for a Space themed Lesbo Porn, I'm just not going to buy the LP. Please don't be offended. Thanks again, Unlcle Ben.

Hey Ben jus a handy hint for Eric’s pinch harmonics, just aim for halfway between the fretted note and the bridge, should always be an octave 👍🏻

@Ben Eller Are you using the Kemper Profiling Amp ? If so which profile(s) are you using..that patch sounds like Eric's tone!
How about them arpeggio doodads that there Vinnie Moore guy uses in The Maze?
Shawn Lane wrote the lick that e j used in the pedal point portion of cliffs.
Huh?
I've also noticed that all the notes that Johnson plays in a run are all in the same key.
Hey Ben, would you mind letting me know what Kemper profile you're using as it sounds great for EJ stuff.
Simon Rourke hey man! I think it was an Amp Factory Mesa Lonestar boosted with the new KHDH Ghoul JR!
Ben Eller awesome, sounds great!

Great info as always, Ben! May I ask what profile you are using in this one? I’m looking for an EJ tone for my Kemper and the one you’re using sounds great.

Da Sam-Yu-Rai yup. You will absolutely nail it.
Nice easy song, and remember start slow and build up speed
Hi Ben, why do you refer to the extra note as the 9th, and not the 2nd?
good question! because of the presence of the 3rd (in this case, minor 3rd). if there wasn't a 3, i would call it a 2.
