I saw EJ test-drive this in a club in the mid-80s before A Via Musicom came out and I remember he had a much longer intro for it, kind of like a whole guitar solo passage for about a minute or two, then noticed when the record came out that it became much more condensed and economical. I had no idea at the time how legendary that intro would be, although it has always seemed blisteringly impressive (I still struggle with just the chorus!). Nice job working it up Ben, and great job with the tone on that patch. It’s phenomenal.

Fun fact - this song regularly appears in lists like "top 50 fender strat songs of all time" and everyone who learns it reaches for their nearest strat. Understandable given how synonymous Eric is with his vintage strats...and of course there is THAT performance from Austin Texas...however, the studio version on Ah Via Musicom featured a strat recording the intro and the rest of the piece was actually recorded with a Gibson 335 :)

I always like to watch other people's learning process. This was really insightful and I nabbed a trick or two to help me learn more better. Can't believe I never thought to use flex time!

Great video man. Loved it! I think he is hammering on from nowhere on the last note of the scary 5 note flurry at the end. I remembering seeing it somewhere on a live version and that’s the only way I could ever get close to having any sort of fluidity with it. Skipping over that D string is impossible lol

It's a super challenging part. Took me 3 months to get it up to speed. You did extremely well for 1 day! I like to use the intro now as a test to see how 'match fit' I am! 🙂

Most excellent!!! Impeccable timing as well. I'BRAVELY decided to tackle this as a project, and all of a sudden, like the Lord himself heard my prayers, HERE IT IS!!! It's coming from Ben, so you know its accurate as it could possibly be, and in bite sized pieces as not to overwhelm. Goes along well with Crystal Planet, so when I'm having an emotional meltdown over one, I can amplify my burden with the other, lol. Eric opened for Joe in a 1,000 seater, Vancouver, 1989 I believe. Life changing. Keep up the most excellent of excellence. It's so apparent it's for the Love of the game.

14:24 As soon as you played that at a speed my brain could follow, I was like dammit! 5’s! EJ and his dang 5’s again. No wonder I can never follow that part (or any of the rest of the intro). Thanks for the lesson Uncle Ben. I’m going to figure this one out. Saw Eric about 10-15 years ago in a small club. It was pretty amazing to see love for sure.

Ben, thank you for the wonderful breakdown and fine sense of humour!
That is one lovely Strat and tone. Are those block saddles and if so, are you digging them? On my 90s Am Std I started with blocks, changed to Callaham bent steel, and ended up going back to blocks, the sound just got too “glassy” with the bent steel. Now I love that fundamental that the blocks give. Besides, I’m not cutting my right hand anymore!
    Greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴 ❤

Fun video, Ben! I do the same sort of freeze frame approach to when trying to nail riffs too. Think it's just sort of something our brain does naturally.

I get the desire to be perfect, but like you said, EJ does it different every time, so I think capturing the feel is almost more important than worrying about every note and every position. I love his extended intro from the famous Austin City Limits performance (the one with the DD drone and he does this chord melody that sounds like Both Sides Now to me). On learning hard bits that seem to feel foreign to where your muscle memory would normally take you, I do deep visualization. Without even holding a guitar. I just think through the part in as much specific detail as I possibly can, every note, every finger placement, every pick stroke. Always thinking about what the next note needs to be and how I'm going to get there. Actually thinking about how I would trigger each muscle movement. Start slow so you can "see" each movement very specifically. It sounds crazy but I find it really works wonders. And I can "practice" like this any time, anywhere (like walking my dog). I don't recommend doing it while driving - it takes too much concentration.

Nothing about Eric Johnson says "stunning shredder and guitar legend".... until the man starts playing. My first ever music DVD was the G3 with Eric, Joe and Steve (back in mid 90's). I bought it to listen to Joe and Steve but ended loving it for the Eric parts.
