Hey kids! On Weekend Wankshop 190, Uncle Ben here is gonna take you all on a metal odyssey through Synyster Gates' solo on Hail to the King by Avenged Sevenfold! And i'm going to be showing you all the RIGHT way ti play it, i haven't seen any accurate lessons here on youtube at all! Especially when it comes to the sweep picking and economy picking lines in here, which are really tricky.
This solo is cool, its got some neat gypsy jazz arpeggio ideas in it, some whammy bar tricks, some sexy slides, all the good stuff. Its not easy, so take your time with it!
Playing my Suhr Modern White Tiger with Aldrich pickups through my Kemper Profiler, using a JCM800 as usual.

You nailed the lead... the only thing that's missing is the way Syn slides into his notes, sort of "off time", and lazily. Otherwise, between the playing and tone, you've absolutely nailed it.
Those are the hardest things to learn, too. But I think it’s what makes this solo and his many other solos so great. They aren’t supposed to be played with perfect timing, it doesn’t have the right feel to it when you play them like that. The slides too are great, it took me forever to learn how to get them off time how he does it.
Exactly.. the laziness is the whole feel of the solo.. and if u rush into it something feel missing it ruins the feel .

One of the best tutorials I have watched so far. You explain it that good, that not even tabs are necessary. Thanks for that. Just one thing I have noticed at around 13:19 , and I have listened to the album version now very slowly to be sure it's correct what I am writing here, the same high e-note is played twice at the end of the first 3 sweeps. The 4th is slightly different though. So it's not exactly "Rosenberg" and with the double picks of the high e and naturally a bit more difficult to play with this extra note. Maybe a bit like the intro of the song ;)

Is that not also an Yngwie homage, amongst all the other homages, in the ascending Em9 arpeggio? Right outta Far Beyond the Sun, though rhythmically different. And those open chromatic open pulloffs definitely remind me of descending lick that opens Victim of Changes. It’s a full bore homage fest!!

Hey Ben, thanks for the lesson. Sounds accurate except some parts of Jimmy Rosenberg arpeggios section. I believe in the first part of that section you need to follow the downward sweeps with an upward sweep yet you skipped the upward sweeps. Your version works too but just saying for absolute perfectionists.
edit: I listened to the song and you know what, I might be wrong about the upward sweep but still it sounds like you're missing a note after each sweep. Maybe it should be like g#-b-d#-g#-g#-d# instead of g#-b-d#-g#-pause-d# but I don't know.

Great lesson Ben! It's the best one online today. I also put in the work and analyzed the live performances and slowed down the audio and my version is about 2 notes away from yours :-) It's a fun song to play live! Of note, Mr. Gates drops his 6th string (or keeps his 6th string dropped) one whole step for this song, the same as is required for the rhythm part. There's no real reason to do this for the lead part, but that's what he does. I play it in the tuning you suggest - it's easier :-)

Onkel (Swenglish for "uncle") Ben, that's a great lesson! All is correct except for that "Rosenberg lick" - it is missing one sixteenth note triplet on the highest note in each arpeggio.

I hear the same thing, watched a live video slowed down as well, seems closer to the recording playing those notes twice.

When ever i play 7 fret B string, my G string starts to hum, why does yours not? I don't see is there any palm mute, but if there is, how is it possible to do with the string next to what u play?

Yeah Uncle Ben im new to guitar. Why is syn’s guitar in Eb tuning but Zacky’s on drop C# tuning. Usually both guitar are in the same tuning , how come this is not the case here ?
Lowest string is not needed to play Syn’s lead parts for the entire song except solo, so he just keeps it in Eb.
