I just checked one of these out at a car show. I'm 6' tall and had no problem sitting in the back seat behind myself. Cabin is solid and no-nonsense. Cargo room is reasonable for a vehicle this size. Engine is a new design, no turbo, dual-injection so carbon fouling of intake valves won't be an issue. Everything easy to work on in the engine compartment. Plus, you can get it with a manual transmission which should help engine performance greatly. Honestly, it's the perfect no-nonsense car for somebody not looking to spend much but wanting to keep their car for 10 years.
We got one and love it, definitely plan on keeping it at least ten years. I just hope the CVT isn't problematic later on. Several Japanese competitors use strictly CTV transmissions and still have a reputation for reliability, so I'm hoping for the best.

For good reason. I hate that CUVs are replacing sedans, BUT the Soul is a damn good little car. 90% the fuel economy of a Forte sedan (brick aerodynamics at speed hurt it a bit), snappy acceleration with the top engines, lots of room inside, and stupid easy to park and maneuver around the city. And to top it off they're reliable as all hell AND pack a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty and they're about the cheapest thing you can buy.
It makes what like 137hp in the new Soul? Considering it's a sub 2,800# vehicle, the power to weight ratio's not horrible. Basically the same as a Forte or Elantra. If that's not enough there's a LOT of cars on the road with worse ratios than that (Fit, Versa, Versa Note, Yaris, Corolla, Accent, Rio, etc).
It is "just a car video" but I work in the wider field of healthcare her in Germany and this video really took the edge off my day and week, first thing that made me smile today. Amazing how you made an interesting and fun video about this car buy putting in a lot of detail but also good savage humor.
I'm from india, I drive this car daily it is really quick, great handling, sounds really nice and very good looking car..122hp and 175nm of tourqe is more than enough for me..
@@VeyronBD remember, this is a scam on the customer. They make him believe it is an automatic, which would mean no clutch, no maintennance (at least for the first 100k miles), and no worries when it comes to driving style. But in reality, CVT is way less durable, less efficient, more demanding in terms of cooling and adjusting driving habits. CVT is cheaper to build and smaller, it also generates more revenue via servicing costs. Tricking a customer to believe he is buying/driving an automatic with torque convertor is a shameless scam. Same applies to twin clutch gearboxes and single clutch automated manuals. Indecency.
Watching this as an Indian, I release the stark difference between the aspirations of consumers in developing and developed countries. We are cost conscious, safety rating is only catching up and also mileage freaks. Our highest aspirations are alloy wheels, touch screen info system and chrome accessories.
I checked one out as a first vehicle for my daughter. Much to like and little to fault. Good visibility, easy driveability and sound safety tech. In black it looks pretty boring but the two tone paint schemes do wonders for this ride. Hard interior plastics are a given at this price point but the ergonomics are sound and the design is very good - it LOOKS like a nice place to be. I predict they will sell a boatload of these.
I truly appreciate your road test and opinions on affordable cars. I like how you are straight to the point and you don't ream the vehicle you are road testing. Keep up the good work! 😀
Major compliment ...for 2020 ive seen you upping the game on testing these vehicles.. Your showing a different eye in your reviews as of late and not following everyone else’s reviews and copying what they say. Thank u for that. I heard the good and the bad here equally.👍🏾.. not just all the good.
This is very important to anyone looking to purchase this car, and should be added to this video. The hatch has a cabin floor which lowers an extra 3 to 5 inches to give you extra crago room. I don't believe they knew this because it adds allot for the space in the back which is he's complaint. I do own this car now so I have a bias but I do love it, even works well in Canadian winters.
Tell me more about winter driving with it, i drive a 2015 rio manual with blizzak, work very well with the traction system and i would assume this one as a similar setup....
Very nice honest review, I can live with those little cons, I just want a simple cheap affordable car now coz I just got more poorer. 👍 Thanks for sharing.
Yes, please, keep reviewing normal cars and really talking about them and all their underpinnings. You are the best at talking about these cars. Even your corvette video where you showed all the problems with the C7. None of the other C7 reviews pointed out those shortcomings!
I thought you were gonna destroy this car by dissing it to the oblivion. This was actually really eye opening and made me appreciate why this car exists.
Very nice review sir. I don't agree with you on all issues though: room. I think this Venue is for singles or elderlies like me (65) that have no children and will never install baby seats and don't shop 12 packs of 50 hygiene rolls at Costco or move their trash bins with their vehicle. And this Venue is also right for those who stay in town and don't leave it. I've started shopping for replacing my 2012 Rio with 70,000 km. But I think I will have much trouble finding a car that suits my needs. The 6 speed auto in the Rio takes full advantage of the 138 HP of the "old" GDI engine with surprising quietness. I can't picture myself flooring a vehicle all the time with that constant roaring. Actually I see myself in this Venue. Perfect size for me. Don't care that much for the plastic as long as it doesn't squeaks and sings like birds. As for the road noise, my Rio is not without fault here but has no wind noise. Do you think Hyundai would give the option of an auto trans or a more powerful engine. I think that between 30 mpg and 33 on highway, the difference is minimal. We're not talking of 26-33. I see much disappointments ahead for me...
I just got back from a week long trip in Puerto Rico and ended up with one of these as a rental during my time there. I gotta say, I was so much more impressed with it than I thought i'd be. Compared to a lot of the other small, "crappy" rentals i've had in the past in other places (Chevy Sonic, VW Polo, Jeep Renegade) this seemed to be the best of the bunch. Coming from my V90 with the B&W system the audio system definitely surprised me. Bump up the treble and bass a bit and it's not half bad. The bass is still a bit muddy and you don't get much of the midtones, but overall I felt I was able to really jam along to my playlists. The rural mountain roads there are... anxiety-inducing, but it took the turns with ease aside from me having like 5hp to work with, it didn't complain too much. Visibility was good, the A-pillars are nice and thin, and the ride quality didn't seem half bad on the rougher roads I found myself on. MPG was about 31-ish mpg, which isn't terrible considering the driving conditions. My only qualm is that it's hideous. It's really just not a pretty car whatsoever... If I lived in a place with a lot of itty-bitty super winding country roads and was on a budget I would probably seriously consider this as an option next to the Mazda CX30 or a Mini.
I went to carmax with my friend and her mom, her mom wanted her to get a 2018 nissan versa for 12k. I was able to talk them in to a 2009 Acura TL V6 in amazing shape and she loves it. Its nicer safer faster and cooler plus it came out to less money with the carmax warranty than the POS manual window nissan versa. People on budget should look for older Acura and Lexus cars because your money goes so much farther. I just cant fathom spending 20k on a new car with crappy hard black plastic inside.
And that $4,000 repair bill at 100,001 miles when the metal on metal friction surfaces fail. Meanwhile the traditional torque converter auto is exceeding 200,000.
For those who live in a city, this is not bad at all. Easy to park great MPG and you wouldn't really go on a rough surface with rear passengers so often. Otherwise, I think the powerful Kona is worth the upgrade.
I appreciate how non elitist you are. As a car enthusiast it's so easy to talk shit about something like this. But you say it how it is and the truth is, it looks pretty decent for an average person who doesnt want to spend much money but also have the warranty and reliability of a new car. I have zero interest in something like this but I watched the whole thing anyways lol
I appreciate your critique of the Hyundai Venue's build quality, ride comfort, driving characteristic's, and value for the dollar, but would have been nice if you could have done a vehicle "walk around" and discussed it's standard features, what options are available, and the vehicle's price point. I understand that it's aimed at the bargain end of the market, but I would like a better idea of what's included in the price, and what it actually looks like. All you discussed were it's "bargain basement" hard plastic interior, it's basic infotainment system, it's artificial sounding CVT Transmission, and only glimpses of the exterior.
Which still has CarPlay and Android Auto. When I started at the Hyundai dealership I'm at, that's literally the first car I drove. Definitely not awe inspiring, but being 6'1" and not hitting my head on the roof is nice, and manual is always preferential to auto where possible
I own an M4 CS and a fully restored Land Cruiser with solid front and rear axles. I love cars including the 2022 Venue Limited for its size, price (though $27K cash out the door is still real money esp accounting for income tax), warranty, free 3 year maintenance plan and overall packaging. It’s a perfect LA daily for valet parking in any strip mall with nary a worry. Superb long term stop and go traffic reliability with AC blasting. Peace of mind. Anonymous. Eschew Xpel, ceramic coatings, Clearplex because it just doesn’t matter. Focus on other things in life other than your prized enthusiast vehicle(s). Well done Hyundai-KIA!
One of my son's (20 years old) just went out and leased one of these as his first new car. As the owner of a 2015 MK7 GTI, I'm REALLY impressed with the solidity, features, and overall quality of the Hyundai. Yes, it's hard plastic all over the interior. But it's "good" hard plastic with texture and rigidity so as not to feel cheap. I don't think my son recognizes , nor cares about the hard plastic. Aside from that, the car is quieter than my GTI, the visibility is excellent, and so is the crash protection. The dad in me prefers him in this sensible choice, rather than him ripping around in a GR86 or Veloster.
I test drove a Venue today. It was a nice little car for what it was. It didn't blow my mind, but I didn't walk away feeling like it was a terrible vehicle either. The interior had a nice layout, it didn't feel cheap but it didn't feel amazing. It's pretty slow. Ride felt a little bumpy, it definitely had a decent amount of road noise, but again, wasn't terrible. I test drove a 2020 Corolla before hand and I felt like the Venue was a better overall experience (I am by no means trying to say it's a better overall buy than a Corolla or that it will last longer, etc, just saying that it felt nicer and had a better interior layout) On the flip side I test drove an Elantra immediately after and quickly determined that It'd be a better overall value and buy - BUT if I was strictly looking for a small CUV, I'd considering one. It's worth looking at if you're interested.
Fine print video idea: go over the sound system report format, each parameter and what affects it. You can use the vehicle you’ve tested as case studies. Thumbs up if folk agree. Thanks
That intro was amazing. Who is that guy that hates you so much? All I know about him is that he drives corvettes, likes baby oil, and is addicted to cranking all day and night with his jungle juice battery pack. Liked and subscribed to the gooseman.
I think you’re being a little harsh as far as interior space goes. This is obviously a tiny vehicle, shorter than my Soul, and Hyundai isn’t trying to hide, or be secretive about that. It reminds me of my old Scion XD, which I considered to be a marvel of packaging efficiency. For a single person or childless couple that rarely uses the rear, or even front, passenger seats, this will do fine. It may not have more space than any other subcompact crossover, but I don’t see it as much worse either.
I watched this right after the video of the Dodge Durango SRT, in which you really enjoyed the acceleration from those 392 cubic inches. So, this Hyundai gave you a big smile (🤷🏻♂️) in that regard too! And for a lot less money.
I am assuning this is the sister to the kia soul based on the cargo space. While the soul is a decent econo box it lacks cargo space. So it makes a good run about for someone that does not use the back seat for passengers.
Agreed. The Soul is ALMOST perfect. But it could definitely use like even just 6" more cargo room length. It would still be little and easy to park and manuever, but you could actually fit stuff back there.
Please review the 2021 Seltos. My wife and I just purchased one and found it to be the best in value and overall fit&finish in its class. Always enjoy your reviews on attainable grocery-getters.
I think I would like this with a 6-speed manual. It's just a big hatchback really. Reminds me a little bit of my old first-generation Nissan Versa, in a way.
Stop comparing this to the Soul! They're not based on the same platform and they don't even compete in the same class! (Venue is classified as a Compact SUV whereas the Soul is classified as a hatchback car) The fact that they're both boxes is irrelevant, they are entirely unrelated besides the fact that they share a parent company. With that out of the way, I will now say this... At 6'3" I fit comfortably in the Venue, I do not fit at all in the Kia Soul. If you are a tall person, you'd be hard-pressed to find a nicer and better-equiped vehicle for under 20g that you can actually fit in. For that reason, I highly recommend you seriously consider the Venue (assuming you're looking for a city commuter/daily driver. Long trips with those brutally hard plastic armrests would be torture)
I've been a Miata guy most of my car driving days and been hating cuv trends but ever since I got rid of my Miata and been driving a Scion xa (essentially a precursor to cuv) I actually don't mind it if it's affordable, comes in manual, and can take a beating like crazy. And for 16,000$ base model I think this thing Is pretty okay
In some countries it was sold out even before it they had it in stock. The pre-orders were unbelievable. Just change the speakers 🔊 if the sound is crap. Too bad it doesn’t come in AWD. For some people that car comes in handy due to a higher ground clearance. In some parts of the world it comes as a 1.1 lt turbo.
It is! The cvt felt underpowered, the manual feel less powerful than a rio but not that much....that engine is fun high reving and smooth for a small car....
Go a step up and get the Kona. I did, the SEL has all the goodies safety wise, no GDi, No Turbo, No DCT, No CVT. around 23k. Plus, AWD has independent rear suspension not torsion beam. Not much room in the trunk but you can still put the seats down.
4:35 luckily all the TP and paper towels have been bought up during this period of national hoarding so you don't have to worry about the lack of space.

@Jess Piedra I believe it. The 2.0L I have is about 8 seconds with it's 164hp and automatic.
One time during "Driving Impressions" I wanna see him ripping down the road doing his best Rodney Dangerfield.
A respect and appreciate you talking about affordable vehicle. I generally avoid "exotic" reviews but will always click on an economy video.
Intro nailed it. Review nailed it. Outro nailed it. Pretty pretty good.
I don't think it looks ordinary. I think it is a brilliant work of industrial art.
These cheap car reviews are way more entertaining than the expensive ones lol
They programmed it to cut power during the “shifts.” You can hear it.
I don't get this, why go to all this bother making a cvt into a fake auto box and not just put in a damn auto box...
@@VeyronBD Because CVTs are cheaper to make and get better gas mileage, but consumers don't like how they sound.
Indecency.
I learned CVT characteristics from Gran Turismo 5 in 2010. Any fake shifting CVT is instantly trash to me.
@@waclosh but it clearly says CVT when you buy it
Watching this as an Indian, I release the stark difference between the aspirations of consumers in developing and developed countries. We are cost conscious, safety rating is only catching up and also mileage freaks. Our highest aspirations are alloy wheels, touch screen info system and chrome accessories.
8:22 Ah yes, the Fast and the Furious gear box mode
I checked one out as a first vehicle for my daughter. Much to like and little to fault. Good visibility, easy driveability and sound safety tech. In black it looks pretty boring but the two tone paint schemes do wonders for this ride. Hard interior plastics are a given at this price point but the ergonomics are sound and the design is very good - it LOOKS like a nice place to be. I predict they will sell a boatload of these.
I truly appreciate your road test and opinions on affordable cars. I like how you are straight to the point and you don't ream the vehicle you are road testing. Keep up the good work! 😀
That Raiders fur collared jacket should be in a museum tbh.
Love the Denim edition with the Blue interior!
Not enough oiled up men in your review... 0/10 IGN
The first 40 seconds killed me in a good way.
The Hyundai Soul?
I always enjoy your videos whether it's an exotic or this venue. A lot of other reviewers I would skip a vehicle like this.
I read somewhere that this car builds off a modular Fisher-Price platform.
Grandad in the end earned you my like
I went to carmax with my friend and her mom, her mom wanted her to get a 2018 nissan versa for 12k.
In India we get the same car with a 1 litre GDI engine and an option of either a dct or a manual.
Gotta love SG, Making intros that not only turn me on but make me very confused!
Good grief. That’s what my 2019 gas Rav4 sounds like under acceleration and the car was almost $40k.
More fake shifting CVTs.......... I want that sewing machine sound.
And that $4,000 repair bill at 100,001 miles when the metal on metal friction surfaces fail. Meanwhile the traditional torque converter auto is exceeding 200,000.
Fake shifts don't help that, you just lose the benefit of staying at peak power while accelerating.
I only look for cars with old very old technology, so I already like this.
For those who live in a city, this is not bad at all. Easy to park great MPG and you wouldn't really go on a rough surface with rear passengers so often. Otherwise, I think the powerful Kona is worth the upgrade.
I like how they didn't even bother to clean it for the "hero" shot.
The thumbnail says it all
true
This was very helpful. I appreciate reviews that address the mechanics of the vehicle. Thank you
I love the attention to detail you show us!
I’m in love with this car well I think thank god for your review!!!
I lol’d at seeing the car next to your garbage bin. Keep up the humor my friend!
I really like the way this things looks from the front.
Unless I missed it, you forgot to mention you can get this in a manual, although only in base trims.
I bet the folks at Hyundai weren't expecting someone to put a garbage can in their press car lol
I test drove a 2020 Corolla before hand and I felt like the Venue was a better overall experience (I am by no means trying to say it's a better overall buy than a Corolla or that it will last longer, etc, just saying that it felt nicer and had a better interior layout)
On the flip side I test drove an Elantra immediately after and quickly determined that It'd be a better overall value and buy - BUT if I was strictly looking for a small CUV, I'd considering one.
This Venue gonna sell a lot of posters at the scholastic book fair this fall!
I like how authentic and throaty the engine sounds
On the point review. Why bother reviewing unaffordable cars?
the intro music throws down harder than the Venue ever could
Top notch musical taste my man.
I'm digging the new background muzak!!!
Definitely would rather have a chain driven CVT then a belt driven CVT. Great job Hyundai by not following Nissan Jatco transmissions.
Wasn't Nissan's chain driven?
Edit: yes they're all chain driven. Far as Google tells me anyway.
Justin Luttrell the ones that Nissan had the most trouble with was belt driven like a scooter would be 😂
I am assuning this is the sister to the kia soul based on the cargo space.
Sneak peek at the next lower cost CUV review during the final thoughts? Hope you waved at some Wrangler owners.
Can I tell you how awesome it is to have the underbelly accessibility? That approach is awesome for those who want to keep cars more than 200k miles
Best intro ever🔥
Thank you for reviewing normal cars. As much as I love sports cars and sport sedans, these cars need attention too.
Love my little kona 2020. Never even considered the venue
Olivier Guay well that is a better vehicle overall
seems fine. i want one. i dont care about cars. i want cheap simple and reliable
So manual transmission is kinda better then this specific CVT?
I have the 2023 Venue. I like the old school vibe. That’s what I wanted. I have the top of the line one the Limited.
Is this the next People’s Car ? As VW beetle intended ?
No, the Mitsubishi Mirage is the next People's Car.
Don't think the venue is going to be a volume seller.
Nope. That would be the RAV4.
4:35 luckily all the TP and paper towels have been bought up during this period of national hoarding so you don't have to worry about the lack of space.
