Ever notice that when the German guy says "hello there!" to Cannonball and Veronica Hamel out of the passenger side window, that window is closed? You can see the reflection of the inside of the car.
For the ones who asked if a Pantera could actually beat a Trans Am, it would be a close battle and come down to who was driving. The 1973 SD455 T/A ran 0-60 in 5.2, 1/4 mile in 13.54@ 104.29 and had a top speed ~165mph. The 1973 Pantera went 0-60 in 5.5, 1/4mile in 14.2@99.87 and had a top speed of ~ 159mph.
165 mph top speed for a '73 SD455 T/A??? Seriously doubt it. I realize Pontiac under rated the SD455 at 290/310hp(depending on year), but even with an honest 350hp, it would take pedestrian 2.73 or higher(lower numerically) rear gears to get to 165, and that would destroy it's 13 second 1/4mile time. I'd say, reasonably, with 3.42 rear gears and in a great state of tune, it might hit 140( and that's exceeding 6000rpms, which is over the stock SD455's powerband). More likely is 130 with the stock camshaft and 3.42 gearing. It's all in the mathematical crunching of gear ratio/tire height/rpm(and horsepower too). 165 and a 13 second 1/4mile just don't add up. Maybe a 15 second 1/4mile(due to 2.73 gearing) and 160ish is doable, but not with gearing to get a 13 second ET.
Well, I'm not trying to convince you but the Pantera only had a 330HP Ford 351 Cleveland and the SD455's actual HP for 1973 was more closer to 425 and the cars came with two choices of rear end gears, the 3.08 and the 3.42. So the Pantera was close to those same speeds so why would it be so unbelievable for the T/A to do it...plus I've been in a '73 SD T/A and witnessed it peg the 160 speedo. My 70 1/2 T/A with the RAII 400 and 3.55 gears would do an honest 145 and that is passed it's "so called" 6000 redline. The 1989 Turbo T/A had similar numbers to the '73 SD with a 301 RWHP Turbo Buick 231 V6 engine and a top speed 0f 161. I'm not saying anyone is wrong but unless you actually have the cars it's hard to know the entire truth. Nice discussion, thanks.
J Watkins SD455 with 425hp stock??? You realize the SD455 has a C/R in the 8.5:1 ratio, right? Unless it's super or turbo charged, no way 425hp stock. SD455 is capable of 750hp+ with the right parts, but bone stock, I don't think so.
J Watkins I thought the Pantera was built for handling... sure has that look at least. So forget the straight line racing and try some curves instead. (As in the movie, for that matter...)
Check out those rims!! Those are 1970 Trans Am only! Now in 2015 IF you can find them you're talking $500 EACH!! About 1/3 the price this car was back in 73. Hard to say if this T/A is a 73? Could be a 70-72??

I'd take the fake over none even though I dislike but, only for the movie's sake.
Funny I thought John Wayne was running a Forest Green '72 Firebird Formula with a 455 with a manual in it from the movie Mc-Q. Well that is what my dad said it was and he has worked on everything under the sun.
Back in the day, it was like if today a Camaro ZL-1 crashed in a film. It's a hell of a nice car, but no one really cares too much, as it's not a classic and is still in production. I don't blame them.

the car the flips has rally wheels on the st when he says he has the same car then before the flip, it has slots and then upside down and burning has rallys.
Back in the early '70s the Pantera was labeled as the fastest production car, but that was probably top speed. I'd think the 455-SD Trans Am would take a win in a 1/4 mile race, then the Pantera would take over from there, lol.
atranfanatic It was sad seeing Trans ams going from 455 super DUTY s to that 301 turbo that had to be 1 of the worst engine ever to come out of Detroit

That's not a 73 SD455 trans am. Interior and front grills are a dead giveaway. It's a 1970
