My Favorite Martial Arts Fights - part 2!

  • I became a fan of the cheesy kung fu and karate movies that tortured us in the 70s and 80s, and have many of them on tape. Here are some of my favorite fight scenes from many of these movies - in some cases, these fight scenes are ALL I kept from some of these movies, and the quality varies from 80s-cable reception to DVD.
Here in part 2, we have the final fight scene from "Lone Wolf McQuade," between Chuck Norris and the late David Carradine, who of course starred in the 1970s series "Kung Fu." I edited this clip quite a bit to remove a lot of "reaction" shots from other people watching the fight. The organ music in this clip is horrible, and belongs in a Dracula movie!!
Next is a long scene from 1973's "Enter the Dragon," the quintessential Bruce Lee karate movie. We have John Saxon punching the daylights out of Bolo Yeung, who is a Chinese martial artist in his own right, followed by a scene of Bruce Lee going wild!
And lastly, we have the big fight scene from "Road House" starring Patrick Swayze, from 1989, sparring with Mashall Teague.
These last two clips are directly from DVD and should look great!!

I was working as a pit musician playing guitar some decades ago, and David carradine's daughter was in the cast. During intermission I went and took a break I wasn't coming on for several minutes into the next ACT, and I was walking through the lobby and there was David Carradine. I've worked with many famous people and crossed paths with celebrities but I made sure to say hello and nice to see you and went on my way I didn't want to bother him or gush over my fandom.

I read an account by Chuck Norris about the filming of this fight scene. Carradine kept really hitting Chuck during takes. Chuck said he told him to watch his control and when Carradine hit him again Chuck clocked him for real and they left the footage in the finished movie. If you look at the 2:29 mark (they slo-mo it) you can see Carradine's head wobble from the full contact punch Chuck delivers. (check the blank look it Carradine's eyes) Ya gotta love it.

The only realism in this clip is that Carradine (who I loved on Kung Fu) obviously had zero martial arts experience, as can be seen by his appalling technique when attempting kicks despite being lower than waist height! Great actor, crap martial artist. Chuck Norris was a real champion who could kick your head off with a spinning back kick before you even saw it coming, he just did whatever the director told him to do, which is why this fight scene is so appalling.

David Carradine actually survived the fight he later changed his name to Bill and founded the most dangerous assassin organization the world have ever known. He mastered the art of the sword and finally met his end under the five point palm exploding heart technique of Beatrix Kiddo. While Chuck Norris moved to Texas and became a ranger and he once told the kid that saw dead people he has AIDS. Chuck sometimes left Texas to help out the aging Rambo, the sagging Conan the Terminator, the reformed Russian boxer and the cool fancy car transporter with their missions. There that’s the wrap

Just seeing this TH-cam video. I've seen the movie many times. Cwazie David Carradine really knew little about Martial arts. But he starred in Kung Fu, a role that Bruce was suppose to play. I can only imagine how Caine would have been with Bruce Lee Wow how did it jump to part 2 without me knowing.

Norris said publicly on talk shows that David Carradine could not pull his punches and misjudged distance all the time. Consequently Norris would get clocked and slightly injured on various sequences. It is also the reason why he did not want to do any more future fight scenes with him. He attributed Carradine's problem to not being a true martial artist.

Actually, (while he wasn't, to start with, an actual martial artist- he got cast as Kwai Chang Kaine because he was a dancer) Carradine was somewhat notorious for being a problem to work with.
My grandfather worked for Warner Bros during the height of Kung Fu's popularity, and the only time I ever heard him use profanity was describing David Carradine.

Bruce Lee was the martial arts legend and icon of his generation and future generations. However David Carradine was simply in a league of his own. They had to slow the camera because his speed was superhuman. At the end of scenes, he had to stay still so they can actually see him walking aimlessly into the sunset.

Carradine was a good actor. He new exactly squat about martial arts, but he still did a whole career by just acting them. Lone Wolf McQuade is my favourite Norris movies. It's because of McQuade's vulnerability. First he is an arrogant and cocky SOB, who then gets creamed and realizes that he is just a human - just a man (it also helps that I like Spagethi Westerns and the whole Man With No Name thing). Rest of the Norris franchise just helped to create the whole Norris meme scene.
