Liked Rebirth overall, but Cid’s obvious character change is one of the things I didn’t care much for. I thought acid had one of the best character arcs in the OG. Characters with personality flaws are interesting. Idealized versions are boring. In the OG Cid was billed as someone who was originally a young prodigy who was an ace pilot and expert engineer. He built the Highwind airship and was slated to be the first man in space. After the failure of the launch his dreams were crushed and Shinra no longer had a use for him. By the time you find him in the OG, he was down on his luck, short-tempered, vulgar, was a chain smoker, and was a dick to Shera and to some extent to others. He was also initially treacherous to the group because he was holding out hope that Shinra would re-start the space program. Through that however, he still had confidence in his own abilities and a subtle optimism as he was continuing to work on the rocket even years after the project had been abandoned. When he was faced with a pressure situation, we also know he ultimately made the decision of aborting the launch to save Shera’s life versus proceeding with the launch. I do not see that as an expression of love towards Shera versus an expression of Cid’s value towards other human life. Shera’s character too is one where she admired/loved Cid for his pre-launch abilities/personality and felt guilt-ridden that he chose her life over his dreams. She tries to cope with that by continuing to serve Cid as basically a maid/nanny (they were not romantically involved when you meet Cid) and Cid treated her like shit as an outlet of his frustration. In the story Cid takes another kick from Ahinra when they tell him they were only in Rocket Town to use the Tiny Bronco and when he is left with the group it is more of a “f it, it’s not like I have anything else going for me.” As the story progresses Cid’s positive character traits start to shine through as he convinces the crew of The Highwind to defect, helps save Tifa and Barrett, and takes charge as the de facto leader while Cloud is out and while Tifa is tending to him. His arc comes to a head when he finally realizes his dream and you catch a glimpse of the wonder and ambition that he had when he is looking out the window into space. The rocket then malfunctions and he learns that Shera was right and that she saved him versus the other way around. That leads him to reflect upon why she did it and how he treated her in response which eventually leads to them getting together and having a loving relationship. That arc also resonates within his theme which I’d describe as a mix of tired hope and perseverance. In Rebirth Cid has yet to show any meaningful personality flaw and isn’t even a smoker. I get changing the arc of Shinra wanting to commandeer the Tiny Bronco if SE was going to give them a fleet of planes in addition to its helicopters, but the smoking plus the original rocket town scenes with Shera, Palmer, etc. were an important part of his character. If he got toned down because “smoking is bad” and “we shouldn’t idealize abuse of women” or some other modern censorship take then I think we are losing a great arc and that Cid will end up being a boring character. Believe it or not not everyone in the world lives an idealized life and IMO OG Cid was the most relatable and arguably the most inspiring of the FF7 characters with how he progressed through the story.
This is a well thought out take on Cid in this game. I personally liked him but I'm willing to respect people with actual investment in his character to be disappointed and feel like he was watered down. It would be like a Walter White who never does crime to instead help Hank bust drug smugglers. Do you even care anymore? It's certainly a much better argument than "no cigarette? No swearing? I'm not buying this shit game." To me, that's both cringe and kinda juvenile. That said, hold out for part 3. I think Cid will get his time to show his weaknesses there. This game is introducing him and Vincent the same way Remake introduced Red XIII. It's more of a teaser, but we'll see a lot more next game. I feel like in depth Yuffie, Vincent, Cid and Cait Sith arcs are going to make up a bulk of part 3 in place of huge materia quests.
I don’t feel like they actually changed his character at all. You simply meet him earlier, and at a time when he needs to be nice to you to make money. He was always cordial with the party. We will see the more familiar cid when it gets to rocket town and Shera is involved. We won’t see cigarettes because there’s some morality/legalities there that didn’t exist in 97.
If this Cid went to FF4 and did that Cid’s job, nothing would be different. That is to say, they turned the most interesting Cid into the least interesting one. The others in the comments do have a point, though, his story isn’t done yet. We’ll see in the next four or five years when this whole thing is over.
@@saynotop2w I'd say the key bits of dialogue that resemble OG Cid: -Calling Shinra shitheads who can't stop him from flying even if they tried. -Complaining that the party wants to take too many people along. Cid tended to drag his feet with party antics in the OG as well. -Being averse to arcane/magical stuff like the Temple of the Ancients and refusing to enter. He always favored science over mysticism. -Standing his ground against Barret's accusations "any man who tries to lord his power over me is going to wish he didn't!" -Finding the Skywheel boring and nearly falling asleep (he tended to get bored and doze off at certain moments in OG). -Proclaiming himself the best pilot in the world. -Being agreeable to Shinra as long as he gets what he's looking for (He says they have their uses sometimes; obviously referring to the Space Program and building the Highwind). There are obvious hints that he's still Cid. What seems to detract people is: -No cigarette, foul language or handmade spear. -No bad attitude and pessimism; he seems more jovial now. -No goddamn tea lines or other empty threats at his domestic partner. To be fair we haven't met her yet. Also I think they'll kinda have to tone this one down. -Wants to be genuinely helpful due to a new attachment to Aerith and her mom, rather than just being along for the ride. -No mention of the rocket yet, just that he loves the concept of flying to space (if talked to at Speed Square). I think the nuances of Cid's dreams and personality are intact, but his most crude and standout features that instantly draw attention (his foul mouth, treatment of Shera, cigarette, angry portrait in the menu) are missing, so he feels like a "PG-13" Cid. Only time will tell if we get a bit more darkness out of him in Part 3.
We all knew who it was as soon as the Tiny Bronco landed, but the walk out and the Camera panning up to a small score of Cid's theme, that's what I came here for
People are crying too much and are showing their nostalgic bias. Its super obvious that both cid and vincent will be playable and expanded upon (rocket town, shera etc) in part 3 which was the least developed disc in the OG game (you could go straight to sephiroth)
It's not just "nostalgia bias" nor do i care of when they are playable, the fact of the matter is that this isn't Cid, this more close to Cid when he is getting close to completing his character arc, not before it, he was crush that, he lost his dream. This isn't a destroy man that has to rebuild himself and takes his anger out on the people around him, when he is just hates his failures.
@@alejandromomota6934 That's exactly the point, Cid shouldn't be at the point where he is mentally capable of doing that, he should be trap in a cage of his own making, and the party are the ones that through their actions allow him to exit it.
dude I had the biggest smile on my face when Cid showed up and exuded that super affable, fun uncle energy. Its a change from the original I’m more than okay with
No slanted rocket. No damn tea. No abused wife. No sexy lady decal. No cigarette to ignite his dynamite. No dragons. Not even a spear. This isn't Cid Highwind, this is an Ifalna/Aerith simp.
Rocket Town's not in the game yet. Shera's not in the game yet. Tea scene is not in the game yet. Sexy Lady Decal is on Airship. No dynamite. Wtf about dragons/spear? He wasn't playable and thus he'll be in part 3.
@maplegal2000 Rocket Town scene shows how obnoxious and disgruntled Cid is, and why. "Shinra took away my outer space, and now they even want to take away my sky". Which is why he tried to flee with his pink plane, and Shrina shot it down into a pink boat. Then Cid joins the party because all his dreams are lost and he has nothing left. Cid doesn't play nice, he is supposed to be as quick-tempered as Barret if not more. The flashback scene where he gave up the dream of the rocket launch because Shera was in danger shows just how much he loves her despite him being angry towards her all day. Ifalna should never be in the picture of Cid's life. Other than dynamite, Cid's limit breaks are much to do with harnessing the power of a Chinese dragon, and he goes bonkers on the enemies with his spear. For me personally, Cid's guts and aggression bring a whole new layer of courage to the team. While everyone was behaving cautiously towards Shinra and Sephiroth by acting all strategic, Cid's vibe was like "Nah I'll just light a dynamite and throw it their direction".
I like to picture this series as being like the 3 separate discs eventually. Like what we had in our beloved copys of FF7 for the PS. I still got my original on the shelf now.
My guess is they are saving the whole of Rocket town for part 3, including Shera. I'm guessing she will be heavily involved in his story in the 3rd part but yeah she isn't included in this game.
there is something off with Cid...he is too lively for someone frustrated as he was in this part of the og...let's see if he will be different in part 3
The circumstances where he was introduced is vastly different. There's no reason for Cid to show his personal trauma to Cloud and Co. right now since its mostly just a professional relationship where he's getting paid. Once we get to icicle inn I'm assuming the ifalna plot point will get him to truly fight and then rocket town will really cement his resolve to take down Shinra and Sephiroth.
Yeah, and when the party starts to interfere on his past getting to Rocket Town, Cid will probably snap out of this commercial demeanor, like it could be a persona to cope with his frustrations, overconfident, also paralleling with Cloud's edgy/cool persona to hide his weakness and even Red with his aged/wise voice. Deep down they are all fucked up.
What's not showing here is when Cid's cranky foul mouthed side is showing when the plane is going down in the water and he tells them to "shut up and get off his ass". I have no doubt that he will lose it more and more in part 3 and have hilarious blow ups. You all need to calm down. Rebirth is amazing, have faith that Square knows what they're doing with the character.
Something was bothering me with Cid design and had to replay the OG and discover why. Cid was a smoker , and from his old design, we can see a cigarette pack strapped to his googles i think. here it is missing. At least thats how i see it.
We see the "job" side of him, he feels guilt about Ifalna so he is helpful to Aerith. In Part 3 he will likely stop off at Rocket Town to repair the Bronco and that's where we will see his dark side.
I'm not happy. Cid got shafted, a complete character change, and one they feels only made to appease the hyper sensitive goons of today. He was tough, ran his mouth, talked down to his wife but made it up to her later. He was flawed but in a good way, that was his charm. This version just feels flawless and bland. And after all the good work they did with the other characters..
What did they do to my boy!? They took the asskicking, lewd, crude and crude, space dreaming, tea guzzling Cid Highwind... and replaced him... with THIS!?
Out of all 9 characters I think they did the worse with his characterization. CLOUD TIFA RED CAIT SITH ARE OG COPIES. BARRET AND YUFFIE ARE THE MOST IMPROVED AERITH WAS TWEAKED AND IS BETTER. VINCENT IM UNDECIDED BUT ….i just wanted CID to not be as rugged as he was but to still be rough around the edges. If they gave him the BARRET treatment it would have been received better….CID is not a bad person but he is ABSOLUTELY no where this nice ugh. It would have been great for him to just tell people tf off in the most uncalled for ways
Mind you I do not MIND this version of Cid. He is lovable and he is sweet, yet still remains for most part crude. However the whole point of Cid is a man who has had his dreams crushed by a company that took advantage of him and his skills, leveraging using said dream only to pull it out from under him. A part of his development is that he's tremendously bitter at Shera for having ruined his dream - despite likely saving his life in the process without him realizing before much later (though we CAN wonder if the added time of disrepair was what triggered the fault to become catastrophic, but that's neither here nor there). He has a connection to the group that is unlike what he used to have. I don't think he had any noticeable interaction with Aerith in the original, but here she is the whole reason for him to stick with the group. Rather than a shared distaste for Shinra, it is his affection for Aerith through Infalna. It makes me wonder if Shera even exists in this iteration. Not that it is too big of a loss as she is a very minor character, no bigger than a shopkeep at most.. though she IS part of Cid's character development. Since they anyway are changing up the story of the game, I suppose this is not the worst change.
Maybe it's way too soon to talk about this but here it goes: What Are You Guys Expecting Cid's Combat Skills/Combos To be? For me, i would love cid to have a very Airborne Combat Focus, I mean it's His Thing Man! The guy loves the air. I'm hoping for a Character the launches enemies to the air and they never touch the ground again, and if they throw in some dragoon Signature Abilities i would be very happy (Cid Poledance When?) I know cid leans more to the "Engineer" "Demoliton Expert" type character with bombs and Gagdets, but i dunno i think Spear Master also suits him pretty well What are you guys hoping to see?
Guess we'll see I know he's a dragoon but I feel like Vincent we'll be more airborne whatever they end up doing it'll be fun I mean they manage to make Cait sith have interesting gameplay
I actually have no idea how they plan to execute Cid's moveset. The key thing is how do you make him unique? Being good in the air is something Cloud, Yuffie and even Tifa can lay claim to. Cloud and Red have counterattack styles. He obviously won't fight like Barret, Vincent or Aerith with his weapon. I'm thinking maybe crowd control? He has big sweep attacks and excels at handling enemy mobs and juggling them? Maybe he has a way to naturally extend Stagger/Pressure duration?
@@Ultinarok47 yup. Like i said a more "Battle Engineer" Archtype can Somewhat fit his character and be unique at the same time. If they go that way, personally i would'nt like him having Sentryguns or Drones or something of the sort, i believe FF7 Cid would Lean more to the Demolition's Expert Given his Limit Break. So For Basic Attacks He should be a Slower Crowd Focused Cloud and for abilities give him Grenades Explosives Flame Throwers or Whatever, then Throw in the Occasional Dragoon move. I doubt They Will do it like that but it's one of the ways They could. It's Hard to realise his combat in one specific way but if they made cait sith one of the most fun Characters to ever exist in an AJRPG (In My Opinion) i guess i should'nt be super concerned about it (I Still Am Tho)
They gave everyone a FF14 class(job) perks, so no doubt Cid is going to be DRG. DRG in FF14 is not the most loved class. It’s going to take a lot to make him good, but seeing as Jump skill works exactly the same, I don’t know.
I don't like this voice choice for Cid, I always picture cid voice to be like snake from Mental Gear Solid, it just fits him with the snake voice for some reason.
@@felixcolon599 I can see that. It’s similar to snake from metal gear solid but in a different way. But ether way it would be better than the voice they using now.

@@saynotop2w I'd say the key bits of dialogue that resemble OG Cid:
-Calling Shinra shitheads who can't stop him from flying even if they tried.
-Complaining that the party wants to take too many people along. Cid tended to drag his feet with party antics in the OG as well.
-Being averse to arcane/magical stuff like the Temple of the Ancients and refusing to enter. He always favored science over mysticism.
-Standing his ground against Barret's accusations "any man who tries to lord his power over me is going to wish he didn't!"
-Finding the Skywheel boring and nearly falling asleep (he tended to get bored and doze off at certain moments in OG).
-Proclaiming himself the best pilot in the world.
-Being agreeable to Shinra as long as he gets what he's looking for (He says they have their uses sometimes; obviously referring to the Space Program and building the Highwind).
There are obvious hints that he's still Cid. What seems to detract people is:
-No cigarette, foul language or handmade spear.
Damn, Woody Harrelson would have been perfect for Cid lol
Or Troy Baker. Reminds of of Joel from the Last of Us without all the trauma.
True. The last disc was basically Just going straight into the creator more or less. But as you say they are gonna fill it up more balanced this time.
@ultimateshadeofwar Cid oozes so much copium and it's obvious he is putting on an act.
@@ultimateshadeofwarhe’s doing what he literally loves, it’s obvious he’s not gonna be like this when he goes back to rocket town dude
Its a change from the original I’m more than okay with
no cigarettes? That's not Cid.
For some reason Cid looks like old man Garland.
No slanted rocket. No damn tea. No abused wife. No sexy lady decal. No cigarette to ignite his dynamite. No dragons. Not even a spear.
This isn't Cid Highwind, this is an Ifalna/Aerith simp.
Change would've made sense if it was hinted that Cid was Aeriths dad or some shit.
im sure that in the last part, we will see!
Rocket Town's not in the game yet.
Shera's not in the game yet.
Tea scene is not in the game yet.
Sexy Lady Decal is on Airship.
No dynamite.
Wtf about dragons/spear?
He wasn't playable and thus he'll be in part 3.
@@maplegal2000 what is the sexy lady
Did they cut shera!?!?!
I think she going to be in part 3
They could be saving her for part 3.
@@judgementcl makes sense
Yeah, and when the party starts to interfere on his past getting to Rocket Town, Cid will probably snap out of this commercial demeanor, like it could be a persona to cope with his frustrations, overconfident, also paralleling with Cloud's edgy/cool persona to hide his weakness and even Red with his aged/wise voice. Deep down they are all fucked up.
He'll Be waiting by the plane scratching his ass.
Nothing darker than being chased by your own shadow but still, theirs HOPE for this man yet.
idk what's worse the live action avatar dumbing down on sokka's sexism or ff7 rebirth not making cid a grouch who is trapped in the past XP!
Change isn't always bad just because it's different than what your nostalgia likes
@@aceb4634 Change isn't always good either.

@@Jhoncena22 tell that to the people ranting about live action Sokka not being sexist
@@17jacoyne I can understand why he's not sexist, but removing that flaw of his means he can't grow out of it.
Aerith’s innocence in copying Yuffie is so wholesome
"you talk? The hell kinda magic trick is this?!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 if only this mfka stayed in cosmo canyon
Cid: What the f%&k are u guys and what do u want?
Honestly? I like this Cid. He's mellowed out a bit, and he still has some of his mannerisms intact.
And no hate is changing my mind.
Agreed!
Why hate you for your opinion?? Even though i disagree entirely. All's fair in gaming preferences, or something like that LOL
Cid tuvo que ser el compañero de Yuffie en el FFVII Remake DLC, para darle más fuerza a su participación.
I have to say, I'm sad he did't offer any GODD*MNED TEA. That is my favourite line for the OG game
I only hope that square don't change the leadership of Cid had on disc 2 on the OG
I'm literally praying to be able to play with him
Cid is so hot
*Walks in slowly lifts up the sheet* *Voice breaking* Look how they massacred my boy. 😭
is Cid helping them on fights or something?
Excuse me Mr Highwind sir can I have your number???
I truly believe Cid is the true hero in FF7 while Cloud being the shitty sephiroth's puppet.
Yuffie expresion is cute
Something was bothering me with Cid design and had to replay the OG and discover why. Cid was a smoker , and from his old design, we can see a cigarette pack strapped to his googles i think. here it is missing. At least thats how i see it.
Boy they downgraded cid real hard
Are you surprised?? I'm not. saddened, sorta, but not surprised. Unfortunately, it's to be expected these days i think
his arc will come in part 3 this is 12 minutes of a long ass game
I kinda miss the hardass version of him
Cid Softwind
We see the "job" side of him, he feels guilt about Ifalna so he is helpful to Aerith. In Part 3 he will likely stop off at Rocket Town to repair the Bronco and that's where we will see his dark side.
Hes so beautiful damnnnn
I'm not happy. Cid got shafted, a complete character change, and one they feels only made to appease the hyper sensitive goons of today.
He was tough, ran his mouth, talked down to his wife but made it up to her later. He was flawed but in a good way, that was his charm.
This version just feels flawless and bland.
And after all the good work they did with the other characters..
they didn’t get married until after the og game
also the main parts where his arc happens aren’t in this game, they’ll likely appear next one
What did they do to my boy!? They took the asskicking, lewd, crude and crude, space dreaming, tea guzzling Cid Highwind... and replaced him... with THIS!?
I have mixed feelings about his new musics.
We don't know what's lurking in this Cid's past. To me it seems like he's compensating for something... as if to redress some karmic balance.
They really should've heard out my audition....
Maybe it's way too soon to talk about this but here it goes:
What Are You Guys Expecting Cid's Combat Skills/Combos To be?
For me, i would love cid to have a very Airborne Combat Focus, I mean it's His Thing Man! The guy loves the air. I'm hoping for a Character the launches enemies to the air and they never touch the ground again, and if they throw in some dragoon Signature Abilities i would be very happy (Cid Poledance When?) I know cid leans more to the "Engineer" "Demoliton Expert" type character with bombs and Gagdets, but i dunno i think Spear Master also suits him pretty well
What are you guys hoping to see?
@@Ultinarok47 crowd control makes sense he does use explosive and stuff
They gave everyone a FF14 class(job) perks, so no doubt Cid is going to be DRG. DRG in FF14 is not the most loved class. It’s going to take a lot to make him good, but seeing as Jump skill works exactly the same, I don’t know.
