Toyota Land Cruiser is Fully Electric and Faster than New with a Nissan Leaf Drivetrain Conversion

- Hey everyone! The Toyota Landcruiser is a classic for a reason being reliable and extremely capable off-road while sporting classic good looks. The typical V6 found in them are getting long in the tooth, and Jimmy from EVSWAP in Denver found just the right way to reenergize this favorite.
Starting with a Landcruiser that needed some love, Jimmy set about taking out the worn V6 and all the ICE system. Then, he snagged a wrecked Nissan Leaf and pulled out the battery and drivetrain. Finally, that Nissan Leaf drivetrain was hooked up to the Toyota Landcruiser so electric power was supplied to the original transfer case and drivelines. The end result is a car that is more performant and faster than the day it was new, and is a whole lot cheaper to fill up.
Join Jimmy and I as we take a deep dive on the fully electric Toyota Land Cruiser and look at all the details. While we caught up during the State Of Charge EV Conference, this awesome car sees the dirt roads at every chance Jimmy gets.

The mind blowing thing about this conversion is that he fitted a 100 hp engine from a Leaf and used it to power this huge Land Cruiser. Between the attention Jimmy paid to gearing and the torque characteristics of the Leaf motor...dang!
So true! You wouldn't guess but having rode in it, the thing hauls!
Thats what i need to learn Very important to keep the speed and power.
Thanks guys! Yes it's only 100hp but it has 100hp from about 1000 RPM to 11,000 RPM. The stock engine probably doesn't make 100hp until 3000 RPM and less torque also. Area under the curve!
It was a ton of fun taking you out for a ride in my truck! Thanks for the awesome video and I can't wait to see more awesome EVs featured by EVTUNERS! Someday I'll come out and we can take your Tesla to the racetrack.
Absolutely! I sense some fun track days in the future. I wanna tag along while you rock crawl too!
Fantastic conversion. Well done for keeping the car as stock as possible inside and keeping the load area. I had to sacrifice some space in my Freelander conversion but my batteries are very bulky.
Using Leaf components made this a really affordable conversion.
I will say this is the only time i believe SUV can really be Electric . My old fj62 landcruiser will be happy to get this system. Thanks very much for showing me its possible.
I'd love to see that!
Cool swap. The 80 series Land Cruisers never had V8s from the factory so you may want to update your description. They were all gas (or diesel for non-North American markets) inline 6 engines. If a V8 came out of that one, it got there by being swapped in at some point.
I love my 1HD-T swapped 60 series I built, but long term an electric swap, with a range extender since I go on long 4wd trips into the mountains and remote areas, would be amazing. Gained a lot of cruising range when I swapped in the diesel so now 800+ km per tank is no problem. I wouldn't want to give up the ability to go far into the woods with my adventure machine and get back out!
Hey good catch thanks! My mind glitched and forget there wasn't a V8 option until the 100 series.
Your 60 series sounds pretty sweet as is! If a swap is in the card for the future we are seeing the battery/motor/range options update pretty quickly so you should have some cool stuff to choose from. Gotta get deep into the mountains for sure!
Cool build and a cool dude.
Thanks for sharing.
Less reliable .. Less practical .. yet more EXPENSIVE .. Whats the point from personal stand point ??
@@kebeleteeek4227 if you have to ask, it's probably not worth trying to explain it to you.
@@greatdane3343 How reliable .. how practical going offroad / expedition to mountains .. remote areas .. for days with EV .. ?? ... Can you bring jerricans of "electrons" (ie: battery packs) to extend the range ..?? ... LOL ....
Awesome job !
i've been wanting to do this to my jetta and escalade since forever now
I'd love to see that! Do you have the build specs all worked out or still planning?
Just one correction to your 2nd paragraph. 80 series Landcruisers typically come with a straight 6.
You're right! I totally had a mental moment. Updated the text description and blog. Thanks for the note!
14:55 yeah because that's what a spaceship sounds like...
The front of the battery is in the front crumple zone. Nonetheless its clever work.
Good catch!
I think a tesla system would have been a better option.
That would be pretty sick too! I can't wait until he gets the second pack installed
How heavy is the it now with the EV setup vs the combustion engine?
I didn't recall so I asked Jimmy: "It was 5180lbs completely stock with full tank of gas and running boards etc. as it sits now it's 5280lbs but has winch and bumpers and 33s etc"
I'm seeing this happen more and more that the swap isn't changing overall weight.
good for instant torque but not good range.
What’s the miles per kw/h when driving normally?
That's a great question! I'll see if I can find out what the latest is.
I didn't think the Leaf dc dc could output 2.4kw i thought it was limited to 1.7kw output?
Hmm interesting. Just did a quick search and found the same concensus. Maybe Jimmy figured something out @EVSwap
@@EVTUNERS Can you ask him if you run into him again for us please 😀
Oh yeah, for sure!
How much does this conversion cost?
Price of a totalled Leaf and some labor (or do it yourself).
@@EVTUNERSYou didn't mention the very expensive resolve controller.
it seems you get way more regen power than my tesla does.
Interesting. I definitely pick up percentages in mine going downhill. Thoughs @evswap?
Transmission?
He us using the single speed Leaf transmission that's integrated with the motor.
@@EVTUNERS ohhh so just couple that to the transfer case and the rest is oem
@@ags5080 exactly! There are really 3 patters most conversions fall into: 1- swap in an oem system and connect to the driveline (or transfer case for this one), this is typically Leaf or Tesla swap, 2- take a oem or aftermarket motor and use an aftermarket gear reducer (like torque trends torque box) and connect to driveline, 3- take a oem or aftermarket motor and connect to a manual transmission (auto can technically be done but has enough downsides it rarely is in practice).
@@EVTUNERS thank you for the response. Whats your thoughts on how to do a 99 GMC Safari Cargo?
I thought to out fit with a t5 manual transmission then get adapter plate with hyper 9 but I wanted to keep cost down and power up. Im in florida so I figured Tesla modules are best bet for cooling
@@ags5080 cool car! Is it already manual transmission? If so keeping it cab lower cost, but if you would have to swap one in I'd suggest going with a motor and single gear setup.
The hyper9 setup is a good one to connect to a manual. Best balance comes down to budget/range/use. Hyper9 with Tesla cells are a great combo. What are your range and use plans?
Terrible interviewer , awesome job from that creative guy !!
