  • As another Defender leaves our electric car conversion factory we thought you'd want to see, in detail, what goes into them. In this video we share everything from how the cooling systems work, to how we mount the Tesla Model 3 motor into the car. We show you everything that goes into making, what we believe to be the coolest Land Rover Defender in the world.
    Now off she goes to Newcastle, probably the only Electric Defender in the city!
    This EV conversion was £50,000 + VAT. Get in touch on our website to find out more about this car and other cars we've built.

    Fantastic system and build! Congratulations to the team at Electric Car Converts on this splendid project. I'm looking forward to seeing many more Landies converted, and my personal favorite, the Range Rover Classic too!
    The system appears well-designed and well-built, and it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into it. The range is impressive too. Now the question is... Will it do a burnout (on grass of course)!

    Pretty awesome! I can't wait for the day I get a chance to do something like this.
    Congrats! and I really appreciate the thorough look around. That was very interesting. 👊❗️

    Thank you for the tour and for not being shy sharing prices. Very pleased and enthusiast about all this EV retrofit mouvement but I am from the other side of the Channel where such conversion initiatives are very complex because of dumb bureaucrates... Keep posting!

    Very impressed with this conversion. Particularly like the removal of all the power-sapping/noisy transmission/transfer box. Could I ask if this conversion carries over some of the Tesla wheel control - anti-lock, etc, on such an old vehicle? Also, one thing leads to another. The sound deadening helps but that owner will be looking to reduce those rattles. Have you looked into whether there is an economic/relatively simple way of stopping metal meeting metal. I'm sure some of your customers can afford it. Best regards.

      Thanks for your kind words! Yep they're definitely efficient without the transmission etc. No it doesn't carry over the Tesla wheel control etc, its just the motor that is Tesla, even the control system for it is different. The owner has now added insulation etc all around the cab, and then carpeted it so the rattles are pretty much gone - but it's still an 80's Land Rover, it wouldn't be right without any rattles at all!

    Can it do vehicle to load? Defender is the kind of car you might want to use power tools, pressure washers etc with

      Yes it does! Our new charging system allows this. You could even charge up another electric car with it!

    Do you upgrade the diffs at all?

    Fantastic.
    How much can it cost to convert my landrover defender 110 petrol engine.
    From the tutorial there seem to be no Hi & Low range.
    I come from hilly side Taita hills in kenya.
    To finish up the hill at times am forced to use low range in order to finish up hill depending on load i have carried is this ev strong enough to climb up steep hills

      Its £60,000 for the conversion kit. There's no hi - lo, but you don't need it due to the amount of torque and power you have from 0rpm anyway. You will have plenty of power to get up the hills, its 280hp.

    This is a really neat conversion and at a sensible price, especially when compared to the very high quality but very very expensive conversions done by the electric classic car guy in Newtown (Wales). I've just sold my Defender and opted into teh company car scheme which has given me a TEsla, but I will consider this in a few years when tis lease is up for renewal. One question I have though, how easy is it to get it registered as a proper EV 9i.e. not tax etc...) with DVLA?

    • @electriccarconverts
      @electriccarconverts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot for your comment Mike! We're in this market to disrupt things because we saw the crazy prices and thought that can't be right!! We handle all of the DVLA stuff, so you can drive it around ULEZ and Tax free - it's quite a process, but it is possible!

    How long does the process take from original diesel to electric conversion from start to finish?

    • @electriccarconverts
      @electriccarconverts  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It takes us around 2 months. Including making the whole kit. If everything is ready the installation is just a day or two.

    Can it also send back electric to the house? So its also a generator?

    • @electriccarconverts
      @electriccarconverts  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an optional add on that we can do yes, but this car specifically doesn't have that.

    • @electriccarconverts

      Yes, they're super powerful so towing is no problem!

    So you have done away with diff lock and hi/ low gears?

    • @electriccarconverts
      @electriccarconverts  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, you don't need hi/low due to the huge torque available from the electric motor. The Tesla motor originally has an open diff in it, but we replace this with a limited slip diff, so although not locked, it still finds traction and is awesome off road.

      We change the rear calipers to some that have a built in cable operated handbrake capabilities.
