  • The most common question we get from travellers - where to eat Czech food? Well, let's answer that!
    Jídelna Světozor: goo.gl/maps/MMSNC3aD9zZRhmVX9 (workers-class cafeteria)
U Červeného páva: goo.gl/maps/62E7A7ESGahz6weC6 (hidden, tasty!)
Mincovna: g.page/restauracemincovna (more fancy, right on the square)
Jizerské pekárny: goo.gl/maps/dzzSsQrM2Tt8jbkv7 (chlebíček & indiánek)

Dude, can't thank you enough! Was literally hungry, tired and looking for a washroom in Old Town Square today, remembered your video and headed straight for Restaurace Mincovna. My wife, brother, sister in law and I all enjoyed our meals. Friendly service and reasonable price! We even saw you talking to a crowd about the crooked ATMs as we walked by after we ate. As a matter of fact, this being my 3rd time here, haven't had a bad meal here yet (Malostranska Beseda, Cafe Louvre, Obecni Dum, Cafe Savoy). If you're thinking of an idea for a show, I'd say feature the "Grand Cafes" of Prague. So far, they've all been great (Cafe Orient as well, thanks!). Forget Paris & Vienna, the cafes here are the real deal (not too busy, rude or expensive) We visit mostly for the food. We miss it here in Toronto. We had the most wonderful Czech restaurant down on Queen street for years - run by a family that escaped in 1968 - but they retired in 2012 and can't get our monthly Svicková fix. Going to have to visit more often!

I was in Czechoslovakia, how it was named back then in 1991, 30 years ago.
There was hardly any tourist then, but I went out of the touristy area, about one or two blocks, and I found this really small restaurant where I ate goulash and a beer for lunch.
After lunch I realized that the whole delicious lunch had costed me about 60 American cents.
    A real bargain.

Also, there is a slightly easier word for a tip, rather than "spropitné", which is like the "formal" variant, most of the people say "dýško" - pronounced "dee-sh-ko". Also to know, tipping isn't obligatory here in Czech Republic, all servers in a restaurant allways have a regular pay, but of course giving them a tip is a really good way to express satisfaction and will definitely make them happy. I'd guess this is why we naturally adapted the rounding-up system Janek was explaining :)

My wife & I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by visiting Prague for the first time in July 2018. Having watched all of The Honest Guide preparing for our trip, we walked EVERYWHERE and loved EVERYTHING. Wandering down every alley and through as many open doorways as possible we found (by accident) U Červeného páva at 2:28 in this video. Cozy, cute and delicious. Since that trip we continue to watch every new video hoping to return someday. We’ve been anticipating this moment when The Honest Guides would also stumble across this great little restaurant. We couldn’t contain our excitement when we saw you introducing the place. Such great memories. Thank you both for what you do.

When I first visited Prague in 1991 fruit dumplings were top of the agenda. Nearly died when my Czech relative cooked me Kynuté jahodové knedlíky in her oven. The four dumplings filled the plate. No wonder cafe's and restaurants serve much smaller portions. Just wish some cafe's etc would not resort to strawberry jam rather than natural fruit.

When I was in Prague in 2015, I liked a restaurant "Havelska Koruna" at Havelska. I guess it was a bit touristy, but the food was good and the price was ok. I even got shouted at in Czech by a buffet-lady for unprecise ordering (in Czech) :D
From where I have eaten lately, I can recommend Moravska Chalupa... but it's in Ostrava ;)

Really appreciate all the video you've posted. I am planning on visiting Prague a second time next year with a friend who lives there and explore the city (last time we avoided the city due to concerns of covid), so learning about the culture and venues of this town is really fantastic to me. Also I can confirm the food is absolutely fantastic, I visited Na Šancích in Prague 15 after playing minigolf with the same friend, and got the best gullasch and beer I've ever had, maybe we will go there again.
