Thanks broski. That is the goal, Sea of Cortez! I gotta get my butt to Ensenada first. Can’t wait to join you for a stint on your upcoming epic adventure!!! 🤙🏼
1:11 - if you're looking for a good cheap option for a fridge, i have a little 42 quart 12v fridge/freezer in my SUV and it's amazing. it was dealer refurbished and cost me just under $110 including taxes and free shipping. the thing works great, even though FedEx shipped and delivered it upside down lol. but ya, i got it 2 years ago in mid December, and i love it. the thing uses very little power, it cools and even freezes well, and although there are a couple small things i would change about it, i am sooo glad i got it. being able to keep food and drinks cold without having to always buy ice and empty out all that water from a cooler, makes long road trips so much more enjoyable. and now when i catch a big fish i can cook enough for 1 meal, and save the rest for later, instead of having to let it go and try to catch a smaller fish to eat so i don't waste any of it. oh! and the one i got is fine on unlevel surfaces, so like driving up hill off road has been fine, and it's supposed to be able to handle 30 degrees of tiltage, so your boat would have to heel over pretty far to even come close to causing a problem, like farther then you would probably even want it to go. and there are some that are good up to 40 degrees, so pretty much no way your boat's gonna do that lol. but ya, i can let you know where i got mine if you're interested. i won't get anything for referring you or anything like that, just figured i would share the great deals i found. i just checked and it looks like they have some pretty good deals right now too. like i found 1 i REALLY wanna buy, with dual zones so 1 side can freeze and the other can cool if you want, but i already have this one and i don't need 2 lol
Thanks man but I already have one of those 12v cooler fridges. It works great but a little small and takes up space in the aft berth. When I said I want a fridge I meant I want a built-in fridge so that it doesn’t get in the way. My 12v cooler fridge is just another object in the way.
@sailingsole new raw water strainer is going in next week - should be a fun little project, followed by some electronic upgrades. Hoping to get the bottom painted this winter
04:58 - those large upholstery needles are great for all sorts of stuff. i have a few sets at my house that i've used sooo many times for everything from repairing a couch, to building a canvas tent, to securing a pirate flag to my little Geo Tracker lol. you can find em online for 2 or 3 bucks, but i always end up needing them like right now and cant find the sets i've bought, so i have to pick em up from hobby lobby for like 6 or 8 bucks. i would suggest getting a sewing palm (the leather thing that goes on your hand and has the metal circle that you use to push them through thick canvas). cuz there will be points where you need to push really hard to get them to go through the material, and if you try to do it with bare skin you'll probably end up with the blunt end of one of them stuck in your thumb. trust me, it doesn't feel very good hahaha
Andy, it definitely looks like you are going to be busy for a little bit. I think as we go into the colder winter months, now is a great time to get all our projects done. I'll be interested to see how the wind generator works out, I will have to come over and check it out.
Upgrades Yahoo! That rigging tuner is really good to have. By now you pretty much know what things you want on your boat and what to improve, especially for longer passages. A water maker isn't that important for coastal cruising, maybe bigger water tank. Added power from the wind generator, why not. Refrigeration to me is important, hauling ice sucks, and the portables are always in the way and limited. Fun video Andy, Cheers.
The refrigerator upgrade is high on my list but I need to budget for that because I just put a deposit on a professional dodger to be made. I was gonna make it myself but I got a good quote so I went for it. My portable fridge is always in the way, it bugs the crap out of me and make the aft berth unusable.
@@sailingsole I have a canvas shop, so I know priorities, time and money often makes decisions. You got a killer deal on your boat, so you have a lot of room for improvements. A used Catalina 315 used goes for $150,000 to $200,000. the 2008 Catalina 30 sold for about $120.000.
Andy, why wouldn't you just purchase one of those 12VDC friges that are so popular (made popular by all the Australian Over Landers) with off roaders and gaining popularity with campers? I'm not talking about the old low tech ones of 20 years ago. These new 12VDC friges have compressors and do real refrigeration. Some are split control where you can use both sides as freezer or both just frig temps or half and half.
Hi Ben, I do have a small one of those 12v fridges. It’s the size of a small cooler and I can fit enough stuff for a weekend but not much room for drinks. I want to convert my ice box in the galley next to the stove into a refrigerator so that I don’t have to have that extra cooler in the way or sitting in the aft berth. The 12v cooler is just “more stuff” that I would like to eliminate. Cheers!
I’ve got the Ecoflow Glacier as an aux fridge on the boat and it’s great. Dual zone with ice maker, even! My only wish was that it used LiFePO4 rather than Li+ (thermal runaway threshold).
Yep I have my work cut out for me. I need to catch up on you videos because I head you say you’re close to pushing off for good right? Where are you headed? Is it for good or a shakedown?
@ yes right after CHRISTMAS and I have minor projects like spot lights etc. Then we will do a shake down before we leave. We will be around the boat most of this month and next getting it ready.
I used some yesterday and it worked amazing. I also bought the inflatable boat cleaner and sealer from West Marine. I was told it works really well. 🤙🏼
Looks like some good video material coming up. I like watching the boat project videos as much as the sailing videos. Looks like some fun projects as well. That wind generators blades look pretty big. Looks like three to four feet worth once installed. What is the actual blade diameter total?
Thanks. Ya it’s gonna be fun to do all this stuff. Thats a great question; the blade diameter is 47” total and I just noticed it’s a 500 watt turbine not 400 watt. We’ll see! I highly doubt it.
Nice planning. I just bought a 1980 C-30, but it has nothing, all was stripped out. I am using your boat to put mine back together (my channel Buena Ventura Life has a couple videos up now of her). I do own a 1984 also, but that is another story. Question of the morning, where did you get your bimini? I need something I can put on her immediately. Keep up the fun.
Right on, I’ll check out your channel 👍🏼. My bimini frame was a dodger frame for a smaller power boat. A few years ago I went to buy a used hatch from this guy and he had the frame. He said if I buy the hatch I can have the frame so I did then used the pattern of the old dodger, modified it to not have the front window and sewed the canvas myself. It was the first thing I’ve ever sewed. I got all the fabric and UV thread at Joannes Fabric store for about $50 total. 🤙🏼
@@sailingsole That was a good thing for you. I will borrow your design and see what I can put together. We, Annapolis region, have used boat parts and I will dig through the pile of frames so see what I can. Thanks and have fun, the C-30's are great.
Looks like a nice list of projects to work on over the winter, enjoying the video's keep them coming. Question for you about starlink, I'm also in LB, go to Catalina about once a month during the summer. I'm looking at the mini and was wondering if the coastal plan works in Catalina or or do I need a different plan. thanks
Hi Mark, pretty sure you need the Roam plan but I’m no authority on the ins and outs of the Starlink plans yet. It has worked for me but I have only used it in short instances so far. I need to use it more.
I have small engines that are over 30 years old. 5hey do NOT require carbon rebuilds. Just proper fuel and a bit of off-season preparation taking all of 2 minutes.
You’re big on running the engine to get amps or charge the batteries. What point is having solar if you have to run the engine all the time to charge your batteries? 😂 Again, as mentioned in the video, I RETURNED the Starlink Standard Kit for the Starlink Mini because I could save power and because it is much more portable. I can take it anywhere with me instead of leaving it installed on the boat.
How does the Victron battery tender "really, really, makes a big difference"? It tells you the voltage. If you don't want to hear a low voltage alarm, then just set the alarm threshold lower. Or don't use big draw items when you don't have the power to do so. Or charge the dang battery when (or before) the voltage drops to a critical level. Blowing $150 for a different gadget could have paid for the fuel to run and charge the batteries so you don't hear a beep.
I don’t have a Victron battery tender so I don’t know what you’re talking about. If you set your voltage alarm level too low then it’s useless. I have it set to a setting that is helpful and as mentioned in the video that only happens when I use big power draws. Also I changed it because I love the convenience of the Victron app. Was it unnecessary? Maybe, but it’s my boat, my money and I’ll spend it as I see fit thanks!
This is a real and relatable channel, I appreciate you saying the prices of everything. Your channel is a must watch for every aspiring sailor.
Thanks for saying that. I’m stoked to share with y’all 👊🏼
Love the upcoming projects! Other than work and family commitments, I see nothing holding you back from cruising the Sea of Cortez!

Good for you. I clearly didn’t take care to store it properly so I have to clean the carb. Pretty simple to understand!
@sailingsole so is using a fuel filter.
You bought a new starlink to save a few amps of electricity? How many amps could your engine produce if you used that money for fuel instead?

Because I wanted to easily adjust it. They haven’t moved and I am putting them in now.
