- Solo Sailing - What I learned from My First Remote Anchorage Experience
In this video, I continue my solo sailing adventure and share my first remote anchorage experience. This is me, learning how to drop anchor alone for the first time.
I'm solo sailing a 1963 Pearson Triton (the same type of boat sailed by James Baldwin during his circumnavigation) 500 nautical miles from Lake Michigan to the south end of Georgian Bay in Canada.

Congrats on your first solo remote anchorage. If I may . . . . . When raising your mainsail, let off the main sheet completely. Keeping the main sheet tight causes the mainsail to start filling with the wind as you hoist the sail. The higher the sail gets, the more wind fills the sail making the hoist very difficult, if not impossible. Once the sail is up, ease off the topping lift while sailing, you'll get a better sail set. Nice looking Triton, they are great boats.
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it, lots to learn but love the process
So happy to see someone raise sail. To often sailing videos just become motoring around.
Thanks, yeah I try but being on a bit of a schedule and not being able to control the weather means some motoring at times. Definitely prefer having the sails up
Alllll right! My kinda boat food!!! Enjoy.
So good 😊
Yes. Unattached bins will come flying off. It's sort of like reeding, if you think about it,do it. Good sailing!
Thanks for sharing that sunset. Cheers from Scotland
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching
On the few times I've anchored (as a solo novice too) I've tried to set the anchor alarm on my phone at the moment I drop the hook (as I stand at the bow). It's not easy as you're doing more than one thing already, but that way if you swing 180 degrees the alarm isn't triggered unnecessarily.
Yeah, I think I forgot the alarm until it was down but something to practice. I just added some extra ft for the drift. Plenty of room in case I dragged a bit before the alarm went off
So happy for you to be enjoying your trip after all the trepidation that can be involved in this lifestyle. I think more experience will lead to less stress and more of these moments. The constant slapping of water on the hull would drive me insane though! Great job sharing your experience with us.Thank you.
Absolutely!! More experience, more training… it will get easier. I’m loving the process
Don’t forget to set your anchor lights on with all that traffic around you. Lol.
lol. I will remember
Oh yes and please try to tie off your halyards on the mast to your mast stays a lot less clanking in the wind for sleeping.
Thanks. Yes, I do.
I actually pull them out tight and tie them to the shroud. It’s better than tying to the mast but still bangs around up top
We anchored there a few years ago. The harbour just south of gowan island. Nice place. Some bears on shore and nice swimming
It was too cold to swim but I’d love to get back later in the summer. Fantastic spot
Very nice!
I have a lot of experience in river canoe trips, inflatable dinghy journeys, fishing from boats but I would like to build my own sailing mini cruiser so this channel seems to be quite an inspiration.
Nice!!
Thanks!
go for it. greet from Holland.
Thank you
Very nice, thank you for taking us with you. Greetings from Berlin.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching
Enjoying your solo sailing adventure. Thanks for sharing...beautiful anchorage!
Thank you. It is a great adventure to share, I’m glad you are enjoying it
Thanks for the video my friend. We enjoyed it a lot. My roommate loved your checkered blanket, your sweater and she thinks you’re cute. Be safe out there. Fair winds. Cheers 🍻
😅 Thanks so much 😊
I love the sweater and blanket, they’re from Ireland, very cozy
It's nice to see these lovely old boats still sailing. I have a 1966 Bristol 27 which is 1ft smaller than the Triton but orherwise very similar. We have the outboard well model which we prefer over an inboard. Happy sailing.
Thanks!
The Bristol is a beautiful boat, you’re lucky to have one
Couple years ago i bought a westerly centaur in blind river. Single handed back to southern georgian bay. Nice place and fairly close to all the nice north channel anchorages
I bought my Triton in Traverse City Michigan and sailing back solo to Midland
Good job! What a place to spend the night. Beautiful boat.
Yes it was! Magnificent
Great video! Liked and subscribed. Now have to catch up.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hello good job on the voyage and first time anchoring! Yes sometimes the people who say it shouldn’t be done are the ones that wish they could do it! Nice boat good idea with storage containers! Happy sailing 🎉
Yes! Thank you! Funny thing is I had a few naysayers but the main one was a former sailor… really don’t understand
Beaut spot!
Yes it was awesome
How far you’ve come!!👍
Congratulations. Enjoy this treat.
Thank you! 😃 It was a great experience
Alway good Jason! Thanks.
Thanks again!
Look at you!!!! Absolutely fantastic. And how it was worth it.
Thanks so much! It really was/is.
Some hints, eh? Tighten your main halyard, and ease the topping lift for better main sail shape and control! Otherwise, Good sailing, Mate! Enjoy every chance you can get!! Still sailing at 87 in two weeks!
Thanks for the tips! I hope I’ll be so lucky
Displacement hull. Nothing but extra gas usage to run oto4 that many RPM's. Good journey!
Thanks
Put your drifter up and don’t depend on the motor!
Goes to show you what other people don’t want you to enjoy.
I’m still trying to get my cape dory 30 ready to go, I m getting old by the minute.
been with you on Algonquin, in the shop building a wooden canoe, and now setting sail. Do you think this model will take you to the Ocean and beyond? I have considered the Alberg boats for some time, have looked at the Titan’s, considering a 30-43’ sloop or ketch. Comments?
I’ve thought about it and who knows. Would be a great adventure but I need to finish refitting the old girl first
Is the boat a nonsuch 26?
The one thing I hate most , see a solo sailing under wind or motor do rig work on deck no saftey rig in place include a swim later of sorts
That "just me out here" feeling is what I dream of too. In my case, Patagonia.. but Chilean maritime authorities make that a bit "constrained". Total freedom should be the whole point of this, no?
It’s the best!
Is your boat a a Hida 26?
The boat is a Pearson Triton
As mentioned, it’s a Triton
I would have slept like a baby…
