Anjelica Huston kills every role. An underrated actress imo. Never thought I’d hate her in a movie but she was so spot-on in this role. She and Drew Barrymore were wonderful.
That scene between them in the bedroom! You *see* the step-mother's pain over her husband's death. She really loved him, and takes out her grief on his daughter, bc she looks like him, and bc he looked to Danielle last before he died. AH is able to show the pain so you sympathize, but still make you hate her!
This is the best Cinderella movie hands down
And the closest one to the original tale
A classic one can watch over and over!
The Moment this Movie ends i want to start it again
There are not many Films that make me not want it to end
My favorite Cinderella adaptation. I love how Leonardo is her “fairy godmother” and I honestly think that this step mother was the worst out of them all.
So happy that more people are watching this! And thank you for reacting to this.
We can say the servants are the mice
The historical references in this movie are wonderful. The scene in 17:00 references the very well-known legend of The Women of Weinsberg. In 1140, when King Conrad III defeated the Duke of Welf and placed Weinsberg under siege, the wives of the men in the besieged castle negotiated a surrender which granted them the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders, with the permission of the king. Leaving everything else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. When the king's people saw what was happening, many of them said that that was not what had been meant and wanted to put a stop to it. But the king laughed and accepted the women's trick. "A king" he said, "should always stand by his word."
I saw this movie for the first time in my 30s. The historical references and many other things, such as the production value and the beautiful storytelling, make this one of my most appreciated movies.
Danielle never lied. She was born noble.
Yes, even the Cinderella of the tale. She always has her title if I'm not wrong
@@cthonisprincess4011 exactly and in some version of the tale, the father is still alive but he's in travel or at home and aware of how his daughter is treated but he does nothing about it
You’re right, many variations of the ‘Ash Maiden’ stories have her as esteemed birth; one even has her already be a Princess.
The really interesting thing is that it isn’t always a stepmother who mistreats the Maiden, in some it’s her older sisters, her father, or a stepfather.
One line in Ever After even mentions that Danielle isn’t exactly a commoner like she and her stepfamily refers to her as- her father Auguste is called ‘Monsieur le Seigneur’ (a Seigneur is basically the French equivalent of a Lord). It means that while Danielle isn’t an Aristocrat, like Rodmilla and co call themselves, she’s still a feudal Lady (or Seigneuresse).
@@cthonisprincess4011 I know about the title : I'm french myself
@@a.g.demada5263 All good, quite a few people don't know what a Seigneur is.
The first time I heard that line, "I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door", It was one of those lines that hit just right. I howled with laughter for a good five minutes. Luckily I was at home.
same! It was still the best lines ever!
I Rewachted it yesterday and were still laughing
I just forgot about that and how funny it actually Was:D
It truly is an incredible version of the Cinderella story - it humanizes the story in a way that makes it more endearing and powerful. Anjelica Huston is the ultimate badass in everything she does.
I love how they allowed the younger stepsister to have such a good heart, and actually help Danielle, and is then rewarded herself, by being able to have the Prince's main officer as her husband, because they're obviously the perfect match for each other, as you see in this movie.
Most of the other versions keep both step sisters being just as evil as their mother, so this version is a wonderful twist with having one stepsister as a good person who helps Danielle as much as she can, so is rewarded by the Royal Family.
Also... some of the earlier versions of the fairy tale are quite brutal as to what happens to the stepmother and sisters, just as some of the earlier versions of most of the other fairy tales people think are so adorable now.....the endings for the wrong-doers weren't that nice.
Even some of the good guys who try to help the main characters, can have some terrible things happen to them.
We have to remember how brutal things were in the medieval settings in which most of these fairy tales were first created.
I love how you noticed her strength as a character where the other Cinderellas were more fanciful dreamers she was more realistic of her place in life and you went from being confused to Drew's casting to her being the best choice.
It's amazing, all the evil stepmother wanted was to be the mother of the future princess. What she wanted was something she was already destined to have, but she loses it because she had no love in her.
The father's death is implied to be a heart attack. A tingling/strange feeling in the left hand/arm is a common sign of heart attack in men. It is also implied that the beginning of the step mother's hatred of Danielle was because the father's last moments and last words were devoted to his daughter, not his wife.
I love this movie so much 💕 as for the father at the beginning: the pain/numbness in his left arm was a symptom of a heart attack which happened very quickly after, the stepmother didn't do a thing to him, she was genuinely upset he died right after their wedding, leaving her there alone. And she was also holding a grudge against Danielle for a long time, because the last thing the father did was look at her and say goodbye to her, not to the baroness. It wasn't the only thing that caused her to treat Danielle poorly, of course, but it added to it.
Finally someone else got that!
Danielle could not tell him the truth because at that time simply dressing above your rank was a crime.
I saw this movie in theater. Wonderful film. As it turns out, Francis I and Henry II were my thirteenth and twelfth great grandfathers. My mother’s father (my grandfather) Clarence was a direct male-line descendant.
They went from France, to England, then ended up in what would become the state of New Jersey in the United States of America. My family even founded a town here called Cream Ridge.
It was cool to see my distant ancestors in a fairytale.
It's actually really cute that you watched this one. Most guys won't have anything to do with it, but it's a legit good movie! I'm also extremely biased because my name is Danielle😍
This is my fav movie. I have it in VHS, DVD, bought it in TH-cam, and now have it in Disney +. I love that the prince came to save her and she had liberated herself.
haha nice! I also have it on VHS and iTunes and now Disney. I can't remember if I have a DVD of it or not though.
@@TheCrayonMaster I just love the message. I do wish she made him suffer a bit more at the end, but thats just me lol
Haha yes! My sister recorded it on VHS when it was on telly, probably in 2000 or 2001. It was my favourite movie as a kid and I watched it to death, every time I watch it now I can still remember where the ad breaks were.
@winterfishes it just so good. I'm happy this movie brings you back to your childhood. I sometimes have it on at work as white noise. I am quoting the majority of it by now.
4:09 . . . 😂😂😂😂😂☠️ What, you’ve never enjoyed a book so much that you read it more than once? That book is the last thing her father gave her, they loved reading together, not to mention I’m sure she loves what’s in it…. I’m sure she’s read it more times than she can count, it’s like holding onto a piece of her dad.
OMG!! This is THE BEST Cinderella and DRESS. I said what I said 🤣. Im so excited for this reaction, I literally cannot wait. LOVE this movie.
12:21 They are playing what's called "Real Tennis", it's the original form and still played - you can look it up.
My absolute favorite Cinderella adaptation! I was really hoping that this would start a trend and we would see other fairy tales adapted in this more historic and realistic way. Love the way DaVinci is the "fairy godmother", and the dress is Daniell's mother's. This adaptation really amplifies all the vital characteristics Cinderella had and flushes out the story in a beautiful way. Thanks for reacting to this!
"She should've brought some apples" 💀
Such a great movie - it's beautifully written and for our current films looking to depict women empowering themselves, not once in this 1998 movie does Danielle get saved by the male, it's a true female empowerment movie. Love the way it's shot too, all real locations, no CGI backdrops.
So glad you liked this! This is the Cinderella I proudly show my daughter. 😀
Loved this so much! Thanks so much for reacting to this, it is really a great movie! I love that Leonardo Da Vinci is taking the role of the fairy godmother. How cool is that? :D
I watched this movie hundreds of times with my mom growing up. It's still one of my favorite Cinderella adaptations and I cry every time.
As a french girl, I was happy to see how well they showed the life in the court of France.
Also, I have a fun fact for you (only a french can notice it) : when Henry spoke to the princess Gabriella, he called her " Madame " but in France, only married women could be called like that, so it means he considered her as married.
Oh wow, that's an interesting detail I never noticed!
The brunette step sister is the actress that played the character of " Rose" in the show Two And A Half Men.
Bro, your reaction made me realize how long it has been since I've seen this movie and how much I actually liked it. Off to watch it again now.
This is my favorite adaptation. The painting of Drew Barrymore as Danielle is based off a real painting by Da Vinci
Great reaction! I was hoping to find a reaction from a man of one of my FAVORITE movies. I love the line from Da Vinci about opening the door, but also the line from Henry when Danielle tells him that he knows her weakness but she has no idea what his is. I melted when he told her, "I should think that it is obvious".
This is one if not my favorite drew barrymore movie. Drew was I believe 23 when she made this movie. I love her in this then never been kissed such a good actress.
One of my all time favorite movies. I'm so glad you enjoyed it - and gave it a great review. Hugs from Canada!
What's hilarious is the step mother and daughter might have actually done quite well for themselves in "the Americas" once they adjusted. There were plenty of fortunes to be made. Instead they're stuck as servants XD
Oh non because in this time, the Americas were the now Central America and the people who were shipped here became slaves
Okay, Pride and Prejudice next!!!
Please 3000
Always nice to watch a handsome man watch a good movie 😍
Love watching "The Princess Bride." "Ever After" movie is the best romantic fantasy movie ever!
This is the 2nd best version of this story. I like how they take the angle of making it historically accurate and realistic. Plus everyone in it is great.
Can I ask what you find is the best live adaptation? I’ve watched a few and each has their own direction so I would like to know ☺️
@@anikag7198 roger and Hammerstein cinderella starring brandy.
Nice! I’m glad you decided to do this one.
Awesome!! Couldn't believe it when this came up on my feed... I have been wanting a reaction to this for a while! I am subscribing to your channel!
I was pretty young when this came out but when I only loved Die Hard and Rambo, this was the first film I learn to appreciate for it's dialogue alone. Not sure if it holds up but I loved the writing.
Thank you for your commentary. I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and found your points to be insightful and on point. This movie totally reinforces that love between two people can be a battlefield when evil forces are at play. Again, thank you.
I'm glad you did this, your reaction was a bit reserved starting off but there was so much good pay off on all the scenes packed with emotions. Loved it.
I clicked on your channel purely because of this movie. Like no one has reacted to this!
Now I have seen you react to final destination, coming to america and trading places. I like that you do unconventional movies.
I am waiting on someone to do Little Nicky too if you havent seen it.
"Awww...he's gonna pretend to be poor with her."
I'm so happy you're reacting to this. This is one of my favourite movies :)
You should certainly check out The Princess Bride if you haven't seen it. It's an absolute classic.
A Cinderella story is a pretty good movie with the story Adapted to take place in today's world or the today of when it came out anyway,
I do NOT watch rom coms of any kind, I’m all about horror and sci fi, but I straight up love this movie. It’s written so well.
I love this movie haha
How about a reaction to "Splash" - another fairy tale version set in 80s? Pretty nice romantic comedy.
This is my favorite non-traditional Cinderella adaptation of all time. 🥰🥰
Best Cinderella movie hands down no questions
Weakness in a hand or arm is an early sign of a heart attack or stroke.
This is my mothers favorite movie...i absolutley hated angelica houston in this and the blonde stepsister
Houston just kills it in every role.
@@MessoriusPrime she's a Gothic goddess as Morticia Addams!
*Huston
I have binge watched your videos for 2 days I have enjoyed watching these movies together lol
I love this movie so much and am so glad to see your reaction to it! Another great live action adaptation is Cinderella with Brandi and Whitney Houston. 😍
I'm not really a Drew Barrymore fan but this and Riding In Cars with Boys are my fav from her.
Haha I just requested this movie on your Pride and Prejudice video. I'm loving these romance reactions. I appreciate you knocking down stupid gender walls while at the same time entertaining us! And it's also cool to see a man react to movies that made most of us women swoon. Maybe Christmas ROM COMS in Dec?? Like the cool ones on Netflix? Other great movies are Count of Monte Cristo, Stardust and if you are looking for another Drew Barrymore one, 50 first dates!
I love this movie. I use to watch it with my dad a lot.
Hey mate🤗 This is the 1st reaction of yours that I've seen & I loved it, subbed & look forward to more!👍 What a great movie! Just adore this version (& Drew lol), Da Vinci in this is 1 of my fave characters ever!🥰 Much love from Australia & have a magnificent day & night! 🤩 💜🇦🇺
Utopia by Sir Thomas More, published about 1516.
Is my favorite of them all.
This is one of my two favorite versions of CInderella. The other is the Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella with Brandi.
I love your reaction this Cinderella Story.
Love this movie! ❤️
The best Cinderella movie i love it never get tired of watching it.
Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite movies.
Barrymore is a versatile actor and a good one.
There were 2 Cinderellas in this story....
Best Cinderella ever!
The Cinderella adaptation with Brandy is the best one, and that is the hill I will die on
Please consider THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1996) with Val Kilmer. Based on a true story about two killer lions. Thank you
An underrated classic
Cool reaction fam
15:13 This part cracks me up XD
LOVE THIS MOVIE
Yayyyy love this movie 😍
Всем бы посоветовала посмотреть, ибо уверена, что многие оценят этот минисериал - Beauty and the Beast (2014) Italy, Spain.
This is another movie that I LOVE....ever
It's my favorite Cinderella movie
I remember when I found out the Mona Lisa was painted onto wood. I felt lied to lol
This is my favorite Cinderella adaptation. I loved your reaction, you made me laugh out loud multiple times. If you are interested in a film that came out around the same time. Please check out "Snow White a Tale of Terror "🍎 it's got a fantastic cast. And is told in a similar way. More realistic. And Snow White is also a really strong female character.
It's odd to see so many folks reacting to this film not realizing the tell-tale sign of a heart attack.
Omg yay!!! ROMEO AND JULIET NEXT PLEASE
Good Video My Friend!
The thing with the hand, numbness in the right hand and arm is a symptom of a heart attack. They're implying that the baroness poisoned him at breakfast.
I think its numbness in the left arm and hand for a symptom of a heart attack.
No, the symptom is numbness in the left arm because it's the side of the heart
Left arm and hand for a heart attack, and that's where the pain was.
It's common knowledge, look it up please.
She didn't poison him, and was just as upset as Danielle.
Jacqueline I hope you had nothing to do with this
Why of course not mother I'm only here for the food
The brunette step sister plays rode on two and a half men.
Is there any way you could react to an older movie comedy called "Dracula: Dead and Loving it"? Its super funny and would love to see ur reaction to it, it starrs Leslie Nielson and is directed by famous comedy director Mel Brooks! Its basically a Dracula movie that is a comedy. Would love to see your reaction to this :)
Are you going to react to Rocky IV: The Director's Cut?
Maybe it's because I'm old. But. They laid out obvious symptoms of a sudden heart attack. I actually prefer movies that don't spoon feed their audience. Movies that require engagement. Active listening, & observation.
That small conversation that the stepmother and Cinderella have with each other at the fireplace, that whole conversation was not exactly meant to be rude but just a realization of what she had to go through and why he the stepmother‘s acting this way. So the fact that you missed the whole point of that conversation is beyond me
Yes, and it nearly looks like a mother/daughter's conversation
And she was trying not to admit that she missed Danielle's father, by saying she hadn't known him that long....but she did miss him, and hated the situation he left her in when he died.
She had a lot of resentment, and was trying to escape by having her eldest daughter marry the prince.
She didn't realize that Danielle would have treated them all well, if she had been allowed to simply marry him herself.
She believed Danielle would mistreat them after the way they had treated her.
I like to believe that Danielle eventually allowed the stepmother and the stepsister to be released to live in a cottage somewhere near the castle, once they had learned their lessons.
There's an earlier version that stated that's what happened to them after a time of being punished, and that they had to rely on charity coming from Cinderella and the Prince, so they would never forget their now lower station in society.
I love that the younger stepsister was rewarded for helping Danielle, and got to marry her own sweetheart from the Prince's royal guard....who was his highest officer in the guard.
@@janicem9225 according to one version of the original tale, the youngest stepsisters isn't as bad as her mother and sister. And in another version, when the stepsisters recongnized Cinderella at the end, they begged her for forgiveness. Cinderella accepts and help them to find a husband
To be fair, most people do miss the entire point of that conversation, same as the beginning when the father dies. They all think the Stepmother was to blame. At least all of the reactors Ive seen react to this movie
This was a beautiful movie but without the fairy and the magic it just feels like something is missing. Like if you took away the magic from Harry Potter what would be left?
Wonderful reaction!!!! Great insight. You should do "Time Travelers Wife". #newsubbie
Bro, pm for a list of tons of movies you could go crazy on !
Wjem she tries to break up and he keeps rambling on all i hear is rhe girl from hitch when the guys hitting on ger in the bar - try to listen!
The best Cinderella is Roger and hammerstein's 1997 with Brandy, Whitney and Whoopi Goldberg

Yeah, you better come up with a good excuse.
Jk
But..... why?
