  • In this episode I compare the great 981 models, the Cayman GTS PDK in Guards Red with Steel Brakes and Cayman GT4 6-speed Manual in Racing Yellow with PCCBs.

    Great video and analysis of two awesome cars. I own a 981 GTS PDK. More or less identical spec to the car in the video. Mine is black. I was deliberating between the GT4 and the GTS too. I put it down to usage in the end (a little bit of affordability too). I see the GT4 having more bias towards track use. Based on me doing maybe one a year I opted for the GTS. I took my GTS on a 3000 miles road trip around the Swiss Alps, Italian lakes and South of France (inc Monaco) this year. The GTS was made for it! Super comfy, economical (+32mpg avge on that trip) and delivers when you need it too. The exhaust note is just the best!

    i love the stitch option selected on that GTS... it was so common to spec the GTS with the Red Stitching... the dash looks better without the colour change like the gt4 has with the yellow stitch on the dash... Grey stitch option is the most rare colourway on the 981, i love how subtle it is.. i think the GTS will age so nicely, future classic for sure!

    Great video Raj. Not long back from a 2400 mile Euro road trip in my 981 CaymanGTS, owned for 12 months now, a superb all round sports car.

    Buy a manual. No matter what you tell yourself, buy a manual. Period, full stop.
    I convinced myself that a manual wasn't a deal breaker and wound up buying a base 981 PDK only to have the transmission shit itself 8 months later. Been in the shop for nearly a month. I'm a little under $7k into it already and they still haven't figured out what the problem is. Apparently all those VERY expensive modules, sensors, control widgets etc can and do fail pretty often. Absolutely fuck that transmission. FUCK it straight to hell.
    Edit: Also, buy the S or GTS. Spend the extra couple bucks and just do it. Other than that, LOVE the car. Drives fantastic, looks like a million bucks, nothing but smiles for miles.

    I think I know that GT4 (because of the wheel colour). Got a few photos of it alongside mine.😃
    Its previous owner did a few roadtrips in it, along with my Carmine Red GT4.
    Can’t really go wrong with either a GTS or GT4. 👍

      Hi Eddie, yes you are correct, I have the pictures you shared on facebook of the 2 GT4s together! I bought it directly from our mutual friend, who is in the movie industry. The GT4 is in very safe hands. I didn't plan to keep it but I quickly changed my mind as soon as I drove it home from the previous owners house! Thanks, Raj

    I have a Rhodium silver 2014 GTS with manual transmission, PTV and X73 sports chassis.
    I believe there are around 130 GTS’s on the road in the U.K. and less than 10% of those with the manual transmission and with the PTV and X73 sports suspension chassis option.

    Both beautiful cars, could you do demonstration of the tyre inflation system on 987/981? Apologies if you have already done this

    Regarding this comparison dealers will make you believe that GT4 is faster but when you drives these cars back to back you will realise how close they are to each other. Last week I went to to test drive a Cayman 981S but to my greatest surprise it was marginally faster than my 897.2 base Cayman that I did not part exchange at their valuation of my car… by the margin of a bees dick. Perhaps a drag racing both cars might be a different story. This show how incredible these Porsches are as a sports car and Raj you just nailed it in your conclusion.

    Lovely cars, love them both! Can you maybe do a video on fire extinguishers for these cars, I'd like to mount one in the passenger foot well (LHD) but I'm too scared where to drill a couple of holes for its bracket without knowing what's behind the carpet 😊

    One of the best videos ever about the comparison between the 981 GT4 vs 981 GTS. By providing a great and more mutual perspective about the different characters of these cars, you really guide people to trust their own preferences. I think this makes a critical difference regarding the following ownership experience especially over time. Personally, I do think that the PDK option (missing in the GT4) is really something to consider. The manuals are rather long geared and enjoying a full rev range brings you into a "severe ticket territory" or being mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear only. Of course, most purists dislike PDK but Porsche's dual clutch is truly on a different level. You can have a lot of engagement with a PDK as well and the excellent adaptability of this gearbox truly provides an incredible driving experience no matter what driving mode you are in.....(I liked your comments about some of Porsche's rather questionable statements concerning protective radiator mesh...PS..did you notice that the GT4 sport steering wheel has actually shorter shift paddles which is less good when being on track where heaving steering input is needed. I upgraded to this wheel over the 981 GTS wheel, which has longer paddles...this also made me wonder about Porsche's thinking.

I do like producing these to show how the models compare, so many people wonder out there which is really suited to them if they have free choice. I have converted a few manual only purists into PDK lovers over the years! I didn't understand your comments about the manual GT4 steering wheel having shorter shift paddles, please could you elaborate? Thanks also for the offer to meet up if I come to the US too! Raj

    Like Raj mentioned, you can daily drive a 981 GT4 if you want to.
    Just watch out for the very low front splitter 😉

    What phone holder/ mount is in the GT4?

    Just had a suspension set up for fast road on my GT4, I didnt think it could get any better but its so sharp its untrue!

    Hi Raj. Great video. I follow your videos. Is it fair to say that a 981 Cayman GTS is more fun to drive then a 991 Carrera S 3.8?

      Hi Ricardo, hard to say as they just perform differently so it is down to personal choice of driving both and seeing. I did a review of a 981 S vs 991.1 C4S, I know not the same but I would expect the overall observations to be similar, here is the link:

      @@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE Also 10nm more torque across the whole rev range which means more power across the whole rev range (not just top end). Also the GTS has a central radiator over the S model (three in total).
