This to me is the ultimate sports car. It's the "if I could only have one" car I would choose. Its got it all. The looks. No top. NA flat six. Mid engine. Modern tech, yet still raw enough.... perfection!
I concur; the perfect sports car platform... Only one thing beats it imo... the originality/ cleanness of the 986 S models; hydraulic steering, fryed egg (GT1) headlights and all 😄
Great car. I am a long-time 911 owner (both air and water cooled). I recently drove a Porsche Boxster 981 up and down the PCH and it was the best thing I ever did. Although it was not a 981 Spyder, it was nevertheless, absolutely incredible. I hate to say it, better than my 991. Be well and all the best.
I have the same car but with the sofas. I’m a little bigger than you and the sofas are snug fit and hold me in quite well. I suggest anyone who gets the LWB seats to try them first. I couldn’t live with them even on a weekend car. The head unit has Bluetooth, so that’s how I wirelessly connect my phone and then use Siri to control the music. It’s completely hands free. Interesting that you say the 981 GT4 motor feels more GT. It’s the exact same 3.8L in the Spyder that’s taken from the 991.1 CS. It shouldn’t feel or sound different but I’ve never driven a GT4. I agree that the Spyder is an amazing car and one that I will own for many more years.
The GT4 motor is tuned differently I believe. For sure the 3.8’s are the same but the GT4 version rattles and clatters far more than the Spyder, which I would term as silky compared to the GT4. Both are AWESOME cars, though. Can’t go wrong with either.
I’ve been looking seriously at this car. I own a 981 Boxster S and while it’s a bullet proof car and fantastic to drive I want more torque and a little more panache at Carreras and Coffee haha. I’ve owned the S almost three trouble free years and I’d highly recommend it to someone who is looking for an entry level Porsche as mine was less than $45,000 and came loaded with options. Lower mileage examples in condition 2 can be had for around $50,000 US. Here’s something I don’t see TH-camrs telling people about the 981. It was built on the same assembly line as the 911. (New 718’s are as well). Half the 981 literally is 911. Engine, trans, interior, front suspension, brakes, wheels , electronics are all the same. This is imo, is the best sports car enthusiast value there is bar none. The car reeks of quality and is extremely fun to drive and incredibly practical. It keeps its value unlike Corvettes and many other cars. It’s a cut above on the street. People notice this car and compliment constantly.
I am massively enthusiastic about my Spyder and have noticed it’s unappreciated to some degree in the Porsche community. It seems people are, first of all, fixated on the 911…which I think detracts from the appreciation of the Boxster platform in general…except for within the Boxster community. We all know and LOVE this mid engine platform. I recently got a 992 Carrera T and before I bought it I owned a 981 GT4 alongside a 981 Spyder. Due to financial and storage reality I had to sell one of the 981’s to make room for the T…and I chose to sell the GT4 to keep the Spyder. If that doesn’t speak volumes then I don’t know what does. The 981 GT4 is a GREAT car but for me the Spyder just checked a few more boxes for the way I use my cars. I street them, don’t track them. The Spyder has the same KILLER motor and trans as the GT4 in a little bit of what I’ll call a softer package. Torque is great and the sport exhaust with the top off (and even with the top on) is perhaps one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard come out of a car and into the cabin. My particular example has the LWB’s which makes it stand out a bit more too. So, whenever someone comments on my channel or other social media and says there are considering a 981 Spyder I always say GO FOR IT! A gentleman reached out to me recently telling me he was going to buy a 981 GT4 and I suggested he go try a Spyder before he pulled the trigger, which he did. Long story short, he messaged me telling me he just bought the Spyder instead of the GT4, is supremely happy and can’t stop driving the car. Thanks for watching!
@@divertitiI had my 987S tuned, Milltek, Softronics, LWF, underdrive pulley, short shifter. In essence a home made 987Spyder. However my 981 Spyder is another animal, but it attracts a bit too much attention. Lost some friendships even.
Finally, as a 981 Spyder owner ive been waiting for this review. Mine is white with the classic interior and the base sport seats. This car is special and flies under the big hype radar. Those that know ,know, if you get my drift. The power, shifter feel, clutch weight and exhaust sound are for me perfect. Your decision to buy one is "Choice" and your review was great. ENJOY THE RIDE.
The Spyders are some of the best sports cars Porsche has ever made. With Mid engine balance, top down exposure to elements of machine and nature, and manual transmissions, it is a special Porsche experience that anyone who loves Porsche should enjoy. They are all great. I have a 718 Spyder and and have owned many 911s, which are all fantastic in their own way. But the Spyder will never go.
I have a 2015 boxster 981 gts, for streaming music you can use Bluetooth from the phone to the car, no need to use the silly cord. I am going to get a Spyder, but it will probably be the 718 series. There is no doubt, the spyder is the best looking and best driving Porsche currently build
I got one of these last year, and I can't believe how much I love this car. My favorite of all that I have owned and CONSTANTLY get compliments on how beautiful this car is. It hits on all visceral levels. Sounds so much better than a 718 Spyder. The problem is, do you drive it and kill the rare value or make it your daily? SUCH a hard decision to make. I may get a second with higher miles so I don't feel guilty driving it all the time because I want to, or get a 981 GT4 as a track car so I can drive it hard and still enjoy the convertible off the track. Can't say enough about this car!! I've listened to your doubts about your previous cars and they make a lot of sense. Still can't turn my back on a manual '18 GT3 4.0 though.
I had the same internal struggle about adding the miles when I first bought it but have decided to put the loss of value out of my mind and enjoy the car as intended. I view it as a keeper and want to experience it on an intrinsic, connected level vs treating it as garage art. Can’t take the $$$ with you, so why not just roll hard and enjoy the ride!
If you don’t mind me asking…how many miles did it have and how much did you buy the car for? And how many miles does it have now? I’ve been looking lately and don’t see many for sale …the ones I do see go for $95-105k
@@RennthusiastI found one that has 29,600 miles selling for $86k…seems like a reasonable price for the reasonable mileage it has. Very excited Also thank you for your content and has a great review and the feeling you described about the car
As an original owner of a 981 Spyder the comments in this video resonates just like the exhaust sound you mention! 😀. I’ve always been amazed that this is actually an OEM exhaust it’s that amazing. Like you, I have no desire to mod the car. It’s perfect as is. The main reason I choose to drive my 993 over the 981 most days is the traffic is so congested in Orlando. I can have more fun at slower speeds in the 993. I own a vacation property in the mountains of NC. There is no garage, so as soon as I find an indoor storage facility I will move the Spyder to NC. I sometimes regret spec’ing 18 ways over buckets, but the heated seats sway the balance in favor of sofa seats, especially if I’m going to use it in chilly mountain mornings!
You should shoot me an email at therennthusiast@gmail.com. I am hosting an air cooled Porsche driving event in May, 2024 and can put you on the invite list. We did 32 cars last spring and will be shooting for more this year. Guys had a blast.
My summary when asked about my 981 Spyder is: "It makes me feel like a much better driver than I really am." Your comment about the 3-5K range meshes with my experience. I describe 4K rpm as being the "Jekyll-Hyde" transition; below 4K it's a well-behaved, classy cruiser, above 4K it becomes a snarling beast with impressive torque. Gears are very long (redline in 2nd is over 80 mph) but you'll either adapt to that or you won't. Last summer did a 2K mile road trip. Plenty of storage for two people and cabin noise wasn't oppressive with top up. Enjoyed it immensely. As for the styling, there's only one thing you need to say: The HUMPS!!!! If you're a track guy/gal, GT4 is better. If you're not (like me), Spyder more enjoyable. My suggestion regarding LWB: Essential to try them out before you buy. I'm 6'5" and just don't fit in LWB (my upper back/shoulders are the main issue). Mine has 18-way sofas and they're fantastic. Mine is also Guards Red and I had the seat centers redone in red/white/black houndstooth (similar to the blue GT4 shown in the video) and they really pop. Only performance mod I've done is swapped out OEM headers for CarGraphic street headers (had them from a previous 981 BGTS and, surprisingly to me at least, the 3.4 and 3.8 engines use the same exhaust headers). Exhaust sound 'more better.' LOL Wonderful cars; glad you're enjoying yours!
I've had my 981 Spyder for 3 years and I sold it to buy a 987 Spyder... I'm starting to miss the 981 more and more... The sound is just so intoxicating
Great car Will and seeing no modifications other than what you need for your intended use is great - so refreshing to see real owner driving content 🎯👏🏎
@@zooski151 Since you didn’t include an @, not sure who you’re responding to, but assuming it is me, my response would be: Are you simultaneously incapable of a meaningful response with content, And the kind of troll that uses the anonymity of the internet to be a boor? Congrats, you answered not with a single word. Points for efficiency. :) If you escape your 911 bubble, you’ll find lots of people who don’t think the 911 is all that good looking a car. The taycan “wagons”, the Macan, and definitely the spyder finally escape that stale Porsche design language.
Great review, thanks for that. I have driven a bunch of different modern Porsche (987S, 997S / GT3, 991T, 991 GT3, 992 base , S and 992 GT3, 718T and GTS 4.0 and a couple of others) but am financially limited to own only one and for me it is the 981 Spyder as well. Yes there are more modern and quicker Porsche but the emotions, the raw character and the sound of the 981 Spyder is unmatched. I also drive laps on the Nürburgring from time to time, if you are not chasing the very last second it is doing great. Only car I would trade it in for is a manual 991.2 GT3 but I am concerned I would regret it since I am driving 99% of my time on public roads and the GT3 fun only starts at 6.000rpm...
I have been waiting for this video. Great car but was hoping to also see you work the top as well :) I thought you would appreciate a convertible experience but don't think if you could only have one you Porsche you would pick this. Let's see what you say after the 911T!
Ok confession time: I've been watching your channel on my tv for months , but because it's a family account we don't subscribe. Just did on my phone. Keep it up. Loving it and if love to see more of that gt4! Owner comparisons!! Spyder vs , 911 vs, etc!
As a guards red 718 Spyder owner (basically same spec as your 981) it would be interesting to see a side by side comparison between the this and a 718 Spyder
993 owner here and paired with 718 Spyder. Blessed to have both. Great combination. My mods on the 718 Spyder are similar, spacers for the LWB and Akrapovic OAP.
I am currently in a 2003 Boxster S and have been saving ruthlessly for a Spyder. I am so close. I want to pay cash, so I have about 8 months left. fingers crossed nothing comes up that wants that cash more than a Porsche dealership.
Love my 981 GTS for many of the same reasons. As I have no hair, a roof is mandatory for me. Love that sound & those throttle blips too. Greetings from NZ.
Your comments and analysis pointing out the character and differences of each model are spot on ! The 991 Spyder is a gem. How about adding a 991 Speedster to your collection ! Yep, big budget needed 😄
Great video. Couldn't agree more..Many of us will be lucky enough to either have or have previously owned other Porsche models. For me the 981 Spyder is my favourite. I don't do track days so until i can drive the ST, this is the best driving experience car on UK B roads...similar to your mountain roads.
The difference in handling and lack of stress and the ability to have the top off and blast a/c in 95 degree temps demonstrates the difference (some would say superiority) of a modern car. Gotta love all of them, modern and vintage, for their different qualities and experiences.
Yep, exactly. As I said in the video, lots of viewers have come to believe I am abandoning air cooled 911 enthusiasm. Not at all. Just rounding out the killer fun the Porsche marque can deliver.
@@Rennthusiast Definitely! The eminence grise of our PCA Region, who owns many incredible air cooled and modern cars, loves them all but admitted he prefers the modern cars due to the incredible handling, a/c, and reliability.
I have the same spec, except the leather wheel and shifter and my trim is red instead of carbon fiber. I would not trade this for anything (well maybe a Carrera GT) According to the numbers, we have 2 of only 50 others in the US with Guards. Such a great car and I am glad you like yours. My biggest gripe is keeping the wheels clean, even with those darker rims, they get filthy after one drive. Real first world problem! You inspired me to go out on a drive right now!
That’s AWESOME with regards to the production numbers. I had read there were 60 GR Spyders in the US so 1 of 50 is even more special. Kind of makes me want to keep the miles off…but I love the car too much and will keep driving it as intended!
Oh yeah! I had a an 08 Boxster base manual years ago and had tons of fun driving it, and that’s not even close to the Spyder. As much as we love our 911’s these Spyders have to be one of the best driver cars on the road. Sweet! 👍🏼👊🏼
I drive/ own a 981 Boxster S with the Porsche Sport Exhaust which sound exactly as the Spyder and I can honestly tell you that exhaust note is addictive and makes you feel like a kid all the time. I hardly drive this super fun car ( I know it’s my choice) as with cars like these come extra attention from people which sometimes is not wanted. And I like to drive high in a pick up truck daily anywhere without worrying about hitting those concrete stoppers, door dents, jealous individuals. They car keyed my first 986 Boxster back in 1997 in a parking lot, so NO paranoia here! It’s not a Spyder but I get a lot of compliments specially if they hear the exhaust music. I drive like stole it when I drive it in the mountains and other roads with very rare occasions I take it easy. I am more attached to my 981 because I do a lot of its maintenance myself and this car has been bullet proof for almost 10 years now. If I could turn back time I would have waited one year to get the 981 Spyder for appreciation purpose but I am very happy with my S with sport exhaust.
One thing that I absolutely cannot find any discussion on is the front spoiler ground clearance. Is it the same as the GT4? How does it compare to a 981S with the X73 Sport Suspension regarding clearance? We need info of this nature to decide if it will work in places like entering our driveways.
I have this exact car. Except I got black wheels. I got extended leather and the seats and some other odds and ends for a total of 103.5K. About 22K in options. I bought it new and have 16K on it. I agree with you. I first wanted a GT4 but the dealer had 15 guys in front of me. Only one in front of me for the Spyder. They had two cars allocated and I am a repeat customer so they got me a car. I have the LWB's. Only downside is the wife hates to go with me but this car needs these. They really make the car and they look impressive as hell when you look into the car. I put GT3 control arms, an RSS rear control arms to bring in a little more negative camber and a harness bar with racing harness. That's all I did. It really gave the car some real bite and my buddy with his holy grail 2011 GT3RS couldn't follow me through the twisties going down the Dragon's Tale. He did pull on me when the road got straight but only a little before we hit the next set of turns. When I was in front I was steadily gaining ground as long as the roads stayed twisty. I like the challenge of air cooled cars but you're right when you talked about recalibrating your inputs to make sure you don't have a bad day. I like easy to tell the truth. Even a new GT3RS scares me. I drove another friends and it was hard to judge on the street with PDK. i guess everything takes some getting used to but I'm keeping this car. It is the most fun car I've ever driven.
I have driven a 981 gt4 and it was great but also too raw and enclosed…I’ll be test driving a 981 spyder soon and hopefully it will feel more street drivable and openness with the top down and still get the exhaust cool note
Have a 996tt cab and am now want to add either a more modern 981 spyder or 991/992 base cab in MT that’s more playful (affordability aside :). What would u recommend?
Great video, Will. Appreciate all your content. I own an 87 3.2 (red over black with full suspension mod) and looking at another car for a 'two car collection'. Just learning more about the Spyder. Did you ever try the 718? I gather it's a heavier car and perhaps doesn't have the same exhaust note?
Thanks for your thoughts. I drove a 981 boxster gts for a week while on a trip and am in love with it. The change in tone when upshifting in the higher gears. The lightweight body. NA flat 6 etc etc. I will be buying one soon, and I ask why you would choose a spyder over the gts. Appreciate any thoughts from anyone
Almost 5 years ago I had to make the same decision as you. First I test drove 2 different 981 GTS. Great car, I loved it. Nonetheless I wanted to try the Spyder and once I did, the GTS was forgotten. It drives better and feels more powerful but also the design of the Spyder is so much more exclusive and beautiful. If you can, I would go with the Spyder, otherwise the GTS is awesome, too.
@ssseeee5116 Good luck! I could test them twice, once at a Porsche dealership and once I found someone in a Porsche online community who took me for a ride and even let me drive myself.
I can respect that but I personally prefer the 981 in manual. However, if the 981 Spyder compares to the 718 Spyder in the same way the 2 GT4’s compare, then for sure I know the 981 is better for me. The great thing about these cars is that we can all find the ones that are the best fit for our unique objectives. You might find this video of interest: 981 Cayman GT4 or 718 Cayman GT4...Which Is Best? Owners Debate! th-cam.com/video/VPJp4vQW1ak/w-d-xo.html
In terms of fun I really prefer the 981 Spyder to the 718 Spyder. 718 is more modern and a bit quicker but emotions / fun wise the 981 Spyder is benchmark.
Great car, aside from the color... I'm all for modding, albeit I have the perfect platform for it; an 02 986 S 3.2 liter. Equipt with my favorite mods...Numeric shifter, Bilstein sports struts, H&R lowering springs, 30 ml spacers, Fabspeed Maxflo exhaust, Evolve cold air intake, upgraded 74 mm throttle body/Plenum, 18 inch sport Classic rims (no tune yet). Plus she's convertible so it's "hard" if not impossible to beat in terms of fun. Imo of course 😁
Awesome video !! I had a 16 Spyder too and miss it badly mine was silver with the red interior, the sound the crackles and pops were intoxicating. I have a question for you , I have never owned a 911 with the engine hanging off the rear axle with that being said what’s the difference between a modern 911 as far as feel and dynamics? Is the midengine design really superior? Also do you feel a delay with a 911 when you make quick transitions left to right because of the engine placement thanks !!
I owned a 991.2 Carrera S and honestly it was difficult for me to even really feel the rear engine bias. It was there but didn’t define the driving experience. Mid engine does have the perfect 50/50 weight balance which gives you a greater level of confidence. My 86 911, on the other hand, does indeed present with a rear weight bias which needs to be managed. Slow in, fast out…or you could lose the rear end.
@tamasszabo8824 thanks!!! you may be right…I could be wrong and didn’t research it…was more making a point of how evenly weighted it feels when driving, especially compared to a 911.
Thanks for comparisons. I have a 993 Targa I’m toying with the idea of selling and looking for a 981 Spyder. Is that crazy talk or worth doing? I only have one slot right now for a weekender.
Wow. Nice car. I’m always debating if I should “downgrade” to a 981 from my 718 Spyder, just because of the exclusivity/rarity and the engine notes of the 981. But went for a drive in it to the Pisgah forest and it was a blast. Also on the long boring highway back home to FL, the sofas were awesome and the exhaust perfect. As for air cooled, I’m good, I’m tired of flying air cooled planes 😂😂
What makes great porsche is the analog feeling and ultimate they are going on the opposite way, i love the analog feeling of the spyder just the sterring wheel should be like always
This is a cool car. I totally get the appeal. I actually traded a 992 for a 718 spyder to pair with my impact bumper hot rod. I think the two pair very nicely and each deliver a unique and rewarding experience. Gotta say though, the long gears do bother me. Makes it very difficult to really wring the car out.
What are your thoughts on 718 spyder vs. this gen? P.s. if you thought Bose sounds good, try Burmester. Bose sounds like a RadioShack ham radio in comparison
I'm a proud owner of a 23' Spyder. Its a life car for sure. I think the 718 Spyder is easily the best looking car Porsche has made in recent history. Sonax Alcantara cleaner is a must I thought the motor in the 981 Spyder was the same as the 981 GT4? The only modification needed on the 718 is an exhaust.
One difference is that you don't need a degree in mechanical engineering to figure out how to get the top up/down in a 981. 987 Spyder top looks like it was designed by Rube Goldberg.
Great video fella. Watching from uk.Have a 2.7 981 and would love one of these one day when I can afford it. Unbelievable machine. Grear video. ps. Nice watch😂😮
Great car. I looked at both the ‘16 Spyder and ‘15 GTS and ultimately chose the GTS with PDK. On the head unit connectivity, my car came with Bose Surround. Once you connect your phone via bluetooth, a streaming bluetooth option appears in the menu after pressing the source button ….no wires music!
The 981 Spyder has the 3.8 liter flat six taken from the 991 Carrera S and shared with the 981 GT4. Amazing motor. I flashed the info up in a card on the front end of the video but didn’t mention it.
As an admittedly non-objective 718 Spyder owner, I never understood why some view the 981 Spyder as the more raw car? The exhaust is definitely louder, but the 981 Spyder has the first gen EPS with less steering feel and it doesn't get the GT front end found in the 718 Spyder and both generations of the GT4. If anything, I viewed the 981 Spyder as the least raw car, at least among this particular group of four Porsche models. What am I missing?
I can’t speak to the 718 Spyder as I haven’t driven it but I can say that between the 981 and the 718 GT4’s, the 981 is more analog feeling: 981 Cayman GT4 or 718 Cayman GT4...Which Is Best? Owners Debate! th-cam.com/video/VPJp4vQW1ak/w-d-xo.html
I own a 981 Spyder and my neighbor owns a 718 Spyder in an equal spec. The 718 is more buttoned-down feeling, while the 981 is a bit more “lively”. It’s these small imperfections which translate to that raw feeling. Couple that more lively Suspension with the objectively better exhaust tone and you’ve got your answer.
I had a 981 Gt4 and put 7500Km on it over 4 years of summer driving ( don't have time or money for track days yet), I recently got a 718 Spyder ( both manual of course) and put 9500Km on over 2 years of summer driving ( also my wife will actually go with me when I want company on those backroads drive to a nice breakfast place or coffee house in the country)..."Nuff said
Boxster to me is still a hairdressers car. Coming from a 911 and Cayman owner. But the Boxster although I love how it drives it still feels compromised. That's why I think the Cayman is better, as a man you can actually drive one.
Hey, you might want to educate yourself regarding the Boxster/Cayman platform. It is insufferable to be so ignorant to the fact they are basically the same car, type 981.
No doubt. Serious question for you though: do you feel that not having a race history detracts from a Porsche model’s credibility? Curious to get your opinion.
absolutely not. Anything Porsche puts out is good. Boxsters have their place in the pecking order as do Caymans. My GT4 RS will never be as good as a 911 GT3 or 911 GT3 RS and I'm ok with that. The Boxster will never be as good as a Cayman. All great cars.
“Never be as good?!” 😂 That’s silly to say. It 100% depends how you want to use the car. I’ve driven darn near everything and I wouldn’t trade my 981 Spyder for anything because I drive within the realm of reason on real roads. With adequate power from a NA 911 engine, a GT shifting 6-speed, glorious sounds, excellent balance, unique style, a raucous character, and Porsche reliability, the 981 Spyder is a perfect real-world sports car.
Different strokes for different folks I get it. And it's great talking about subjective points like "fun" and "thrilling" "best sports car" etc. Porsche makes great products all around and the Boxster has it's place in the lineup. I can't wait until the Sypder RS comes out, all of a sudden it's gonna be "better" and more "fun" then my 4RS, lol.
Well I guess I've found the one area where we strongly disagree. Can't stand the farts and crackles in exhausts. So much so that I spent $2500 getting it tuned out of my 992 and other than that, tend to steer away from cars that have that.
I had a 991.2 Carrera S and had the sport exhaust on it. I can see why many people don’t like it. I personally liked the burbles and cracks but they’re definitely not as soulful as the NA version. This 981 PSE is next level and the 991.2/992 PSE sounds tame in comparison. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Yeah, it is just a preference thing - no right or wrong. I also have an air cooled 993 and water cooled 991.2 GT3 and both have what I consider more "pure" and characterful exhaust sound (than my 992) without artificial extras...@@Rennthusiast
Goes without saying, more than 50% of true sports car characteristics comes from its suspension. Unfortunately, 981 Boxster Spyder doesn't have the same suspension as GT4 and it was NOT fully developed by the GT department in Weissach. If you would like the true GT car in Spyder, then please consider getting 718 Spyder. It is a whole new world and it reall drives just like GT4, but convertible. 😎
There’s nothing unfortunate about the fixed 981 Spyder suspension. For the road, the suspension is just about perfect. It makes me question if you have ever driven one?
Very capable cars but they will never be as engaging as an air-cooled 911. Simply too easy to drive; too predictable. I like women that keep me on my toes - 😏
lol it’s a different and less challenging driving experience for sure. Love the analogy. I think it’s all about what mood you’re in. Air cooled is, without a doubt, the more engaging car.

Why not just tune your 981 S for a bit more power? Seems silly to spend 2x the money just to gain external validation from other people
@@divertitiI had my 987S tuned, Milltek, Softronics, LWF, underdrive pulley, short shifter.
I have customized 981. Incredible car. I put 37K miles on it in 17 months and drove it through 7, states in 2 1/2 months...
@stevexspeed7649 $95 - $105 is in range. Mine had 7600 when I bought it. You’ll pay on the higher side of that range for a lower mileage example.
@@RennthusiastI found one that has 29,600 miles selling for $86k…seems like a reasonable price for the reasonable mileage it has. Very excited
Also thank you for your content and has a great review and the feeling you described about the car
@stevexspeed7649 good deal if it’s clean. What color?
Heated seats in a convertible are one of those things that once you experience them, you can never go back.
My summary when asked about my 981 Spyder is: "It makes me feel like a much better driver than I really am."
Your comment about the 3-5K range meshes with my experience.
Exhaust sound 'more better.' LOL
Wonderful cars; glad you're enjoying yours!
I've had my 981 Spyder for 3 years and I sold it to buy a 987 Spyder... I'm starting to miss the 981 more and more... The sound is just so intoxicating
Do you have factory PSE?
@@DasCayman unfortunately not on my 987 :(
Your Spyder sounds great. Any recommendation for a stock exhaust with no PSE?
Great car Will and seeing no modifications other than what you need for your intended use is great - so refreshing to see real owner driving content 🎯👏🏎
“Of course, it’s no 911”…I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. lol Spyders are far better looking than any 911. Hands down.
I don’t agree but glad you love it. Spyder is gorgeous no doubt but 911 is iconic and second to none. Thanks for commenting 😄
Wrong.

I have a 911 991.1 GTS…. How dare you be right??? Explain yourself!
I second the Sonax treatment for alcantara. Excellent product for keeping it looking full and fresh.
Been thinking about picking one up myself so this review is super helpful. Thank you
Buy one. You won’t regret it.
I have been waiting for this video. Great car but was hoping to also see you work the top as well :)
I thought you would appreciate a convertible experience but don't think if you could only have one you Porsche you would pick this. Let's see what you say after the 911T!
Can't wait to hear more about your 992T order!
Ok confession time: I've been watching your channel on my tv for months , but because it's a family account we don't subscribe. Just did on my phone. Keep it up. Loving it and if love to see more of that gt4! Owner comparisons!! Spyder vs , 911 vs, etc!
Thank you. always feels good to get positive feedback.
We are so lucky to have 2 opposite yet great Porsche driving experiences in our garages.
It has been fun to watch your interests evolve!
I use no scent baby wipes to clean alcantara. It works great.
Great video. Couldn't agree more..Many of us will be lucky enough to either have or have previously owned other Porsche models. For me the 981 Spyder is my favourite. I don't do track days so until i can drive the ST, this is the best driving experience car on UK B roads...similar to your mountain roads.
Hi Will, love the red and it's a convertible too. You have great taste in cars.
I love my spider, such a good car, and even can keep up with some serious things on track , amazing car
Lucky you, I have a GT Silver over Garnet Red one. What I like most are the ceramic brakes. Red calipers don’t do it for me, and no rust or dust.
That’s one of the best things about PCCBs, no brake dust.
If I could turn back time I would have waited one year
to get the 981 Spyder for appreciation purpose but I am very happy with my S with sport exhaust.
981 Spyder here, sorry about those dicks who keyed your ride.
Looks like Summerfield NC in some of your footage, used to live there, great roads for a sports car.
I just got the 2022 Porsche Spyder. Love it! Best!
One thing that I absolutely cannot find any discussion on is the front spoiler ground clearance. Is it the same as the GT4? How does it compare to a 981S with the X73 Sport Suspension regarding clearance? We need info of this nature to decide if it will work in places like entering our driveways.
Looks amazing and the Best colour !
I own one as well and it is an amazing car. I tested a GT4 before buying mine and I totally agree with your comments.
I’ve put 200+ miles on it in and around town over the past 3 or 4 days for no reason other than it’s just so enjoyable to drive.
I have driven a 981 gt4 and it was great but also too raw and enclosed…I’ll be test driving a 981 spyder soon and hopefully it will feel more street drivable and openness with the top down and still get the exhaust cool note
@stevexspeed7649 if that’s your objection and objective you will LOVE the Spyder.
@@Rennthusiast❤
Have a 996tt cab and am now want to add either a more modern 981 spyder or 991/992 base cab in MT that’s more playful (affordability aside :). What would u recommend?
Great video, Will. Appreciate all your content. I own an 87 3.2 (red over black with full suspension mod) and looking at another car for a 'two car collection'. Just learning more about the Spyder. Did you ever try the 718? I gather it's a heavier car and perhaps doesn't have the same exhaust note?
Great video as usual!
Modding and taxes catches up fast when you like new flavors every quarter 😂
You got that right. Luckily there are ways to help with both of those issues 😎
I wanted what I perceived to be the most special, unique iteration of the 981 Boxster.
I see. Will see if i can get my hands on a 981 spyder to compare@@Rennthusiast
@@Dathumm I see. thanks. need to find someone willing to let me test a spyder!
@ssseeee5116 Good luck! I could test them twice, once at a Porsche dealership and once I found someone in a Porsche online community who took me for a ride and even let me drive myself.
Just got my ‘16 981 Cayman now I have a new goal with the Spyder.
Spyders are really the best all around porsche out there. This is like a 9/10 car, with the 718 spyder being a 9.3/10 to me.
After driving both I prefer the 981. 718 pulls harder at redline but feels a little more insulated and numb.
Personally I can’t imagine any better fun car than a 718 Spyder PDK. It got everything I ever needed.

@@Rennthusiast Personally any Boxster was always to feminine designed. Just the 718 convinced me.
@@Rennthusiast Great video about an awesome car! Are you sure about the 50/50 weight balance? I believe that it is more like 40/60.

I would say 993 coupe or 981 Spyder.
Can’t go wrong with the 981 Spyder. Probably the best weekender there is with its looks, performance and sound.
How you use this product sonax? by the way excelent videos
Thanks. Just mist it on, let it sit for a brief moment then wipe it off with a microfiber cloth
Love that Panda Daytona!!
Wow.
😂
What makes great porsche is the analog feeling and ultimate they are going on the opposite way, i love the analog feeling of the spyder just the sterring wheel should be like always
This model, this color, it all screams FUN! Enjoy it 😊
Better and better. Porsche are just doing amazing work and more so because their cars have been rated as the most reliable make in the world.
Seems you and I share a similar goal…have different Porsches that are both great but that complement eachother in terms of experience delivered.
Do a high-performance driver education track day. The only place you can fully tap into the Porsche experience and it's extremely high handling limits
Driven just about everything Porsche made, I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face after getting out of my first 981 Boxster GTS drive.
Sonax Alcantara cleaner is a must
I thought the motor in the 981 Spyder was the same as the 981 GT4?
The only modification needed on the 718 is an exhaust.
Yes, same motor as in the GT4. Thought I mentioned that?
Yes! Awesome Spyder!
How does this compare to a 987 Spyder?
One difference is that you don't need a degree in mechanical engineering to figure out how to get the top up/down in a 981. 987 Spyder top looks like it was designed by Rube Goldberg.
When is Jeb going to make an appearance!!!
He tried riding in the Spyder the other day. He didn’t enjoy the small size of the car.
@@Rennthusiast Jeb could loose a little weight. I didn't say that out loud.
I'd have to have the "sofa seats" as my wife's back is messed up and she'd have a real problem with the buckets.
Doesn't anyone else agree it looks like a mini carrera GT ?? I think so but know one mentions it ..😊
Shut the front door! Now I need a spyder next to gt4
Did you ever mention what engine it has ? 4.0l
I can’t speak to the 718 Spyder as I haven’t driven it but I can say that between the 981 and the 718 GT4’s, the 981 is more analog feeling:
981 Cayman GT4 or 718 Cayman GT4...Which Is Best? Owners Debate!
th-cam.com/video/VPJp4vQW1ak/w-d-xo.html
I own a 981 Spyder and my neighbor owns a 718 Spyder in an equal spec. The 718 is more buttoned-down feeling, while the 981 is a bit more “lively”. It’s these small imperfections which translate to that raw feeling. Couple that more lively Suspension with the objectively better exhaust tone and you’ve got your answer.

Boxster to me is still a hairdressers car. Coming from a 911 and Cayman owner. But the Boxster although I love how it drives it still feels compromised. That's why I think the Cayman is better, as a man you can actually drive one.
How do you feel about the 981 Spyder? Boxster with a heavy dose of GT4.
Hey, you might want to educate yourself regarding the Boxster/Cayman platform. It is insufferable to be so ignorant to the fact they are basically the same car, type 981.
No race history, just a street car
“Never be as good?!”
😂
That’s silly to say.
@RudyP18 agree 100%
