  • So here's my first look at the Helm Compact 1 from Wild Country
I've been looking at this tent for a while and seeing as it recently won Trail Magazine's Trail Gear Of The Year Award 2023 I had to get hold of one and see what it's all about!
I can't wait to get it out on the mountains and give it a proper test, but my first impressions are that it's going to be my new go to tent for a while! ⛺️
Here's what Terra Nova have to say about the tent ⬇️
The Helm Compact 1 is a remarkably spacious 1 person dome tent that packs down to just 30cm x 17cm. This 3-season, 1-person tent is lightweight and compact, easy to pitch and simple to pack away. A perfect tent for backpacking trips and youth expeditions.
    - Gear of the Year Winner 2023
    - Trail Magazine Best Value Award 2022
    - A good choice for medium-duration backpacking trips where more space may be needed.
    - The inner has plenty of headroom and there’s a good-sized porch for kit storage.
    - There’s extra storage space under the rear flysheet which can be accessed from a small door in the inner.
    - The 1 person dome tent design provides more stability than a single-pole tent.
    - Quick and easy to erect, the flysheet and inner pitch together.
    - Great ventilation with a mesh panel on the inner door, plus a smaller mesh door with a cover at the rear of the inner.
    - Easy access to the rear porch is accessible through the small door on the inner.
    - Comes with a side-opening, tarp-style tent bag which makes it easier to pack away when it’s time to move on.
    - A good choice for backpackers and campers looking for a roomy 1 person tent.

I purchased one of these late last year for cold weather camping. Had it shipped to the U.S. and I absolutely love it!!! I’m 6’4” tall and it fits me well!

I swear by this tent. I used my HC1 every night on the 100-mile South Downs Way this year. Just solid and a shelter you look forward to getting into at the end of a long day of hiking. My top tips: pitch diagonally into strong wind and also avoid using it in summer as you’ll bake!! Good video and thanks 👍

Thanks for watching mate. Good tip, will try that out if it’s windy when I’m out in the winter 👍🏻

Great reviews, had mine for about 10 months, it's great to be able to sit upright in, very stable and full of features you would expect from a much more expensive tent👍

Totally agree. Best tent for the money in my mind! Thanks for watching 😊

Good review/synopsis. Had my Helm 1 since the tail end of last year. At first it was a bit cramped for me, but I was over a stone heavier back then, and not used to 1 man tent camping, given I'm 55 and not too limber these days. After another couple of trips out in it, I've gotten used to the space and am quite happy in it now. It's certainly capable in bad weather and is rock solid in the wind - I use snow anchors on the guy lines for more 'bite'. The weight isn't an issue as I would rather have a weighty tent built like a tank that I have confidence in for when the weather turns.
I do have a bigger tent (Wild Country Panacea 2)for the deep winter when the nights are long and you are tent bound for longer, but that has yet to be tested on a hill. After Paul Messner's review of the Panacea I'm not worried about it, and I'm quite looking forward to taking it out in some challenging weather. Liked and subbed, perhaps you can reciprocate on my channel. ATB

Good review mate. Being able to sit up in a tent makes such a huge difference to comfort, especially in those months when you spend so much time inside. Looking forward to seeing how it works on the hills.. ATB, Roger

Thanks mate. I never thought it would be that different but it is! Weird that I was just about to sit down and watch your trip to the Beacons and a notification popped up that you commented 😂

Just bought mines yesterday with the footprint and also got the 20% off. Exact same issue I was having with the zephyros 2. I’ve got the lanshan pro 1 for my multi day hikes but the condensation is horrific but the weight is prefect

You videos are brill mate. Thorough with the examples of both tents. 👌🏼 keep up the good work! Between you, grizzly gas and obvs messner you all Brillaint and I think lead the entertainment in this industry 😁
Also a side note, if your gunna be using this over the zephyros, would you be willing to sell its ground sheet I’m having a bluddy nightmare trying to get a hold of one 😂

Thanks mate. Means a lot to get comments like that. I don’t have a ground sheet. Never felt the need to use one. I’d rather an extra beer in the bag 😂

@@holmesaway that’s very good point! Another johns smooth 👌🏼😂 after watching a few of yours then I’ll trust ya on that specially after the -6 in same tent! 😁 I think sometimes watching a lot of TH-cam it puts a lot of pressure to buy the un necessary, another reason as to why I like yours…. Honesty 😁

Just about got it spot on today 👌🏼 2 hours of playing with all knots and guy lines and it’s got maybe 10% of the sag it did have and with the vents open balloons up nicely

Hi, did you get the pole repair sleeve with your tent ?, I just received a helm 1 today and it was missing. Great video👍

    • @holmesaway
      @holmesaway  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes it came with a sleeve. Would definitely contact Terra nova to get a replacement sent. Their service is really good so don’t think you’ll have any issues. Hope you enjoy using the tent 👍🏻 thanks for watching

Great tents aren’t they. Don’t forget to register for warranty. Their tent poles guarantee is excellent.
I got 3 person version and it done very well in strong wind some rain in Dartmoor camping with my son and wife.
Thinking of buying one person version for myself now.

I always make sure to keep any heat as far away from the fly as possible and make sure to either open the top zip or the whole door for ventilation 👍🏻
