Oh, this was a tough topic to condense, and I have so much more I want to show and share! I hope you enjoyed these tips and please let me know if you're writing a series and want more videos showing the process instead of just talking about it! Happy Weekend, everyone!
I've been thinking about my first book being apart of a series and this has been a very informative video which i feel would help me. Thank you very much.
I have to say, thank you. I am so utterly spoiled by the way you teach and offer insight in writing. I took some classes with my library for Nano and the whole time I thought 'Sarra would have explained this better' or 'Sarra would make this sound more accessible'. So thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos. I wish you luck with tying up the rest of your series (lighting a candle for you!).
The first craft course I came across about Series writing was Holly Lisle's How to write a Series and I just remember reading in the intro page where she said about there being "192 types of series" and just pausing as I tried to process that. Because I was fairly new to writing at the time, that kinda intimidated me and I was like "I might come back to series fiction later". It's now later and having taken a number of Holly's courses I've found them to be really useful and full of tools that can be applied in numerous situations. Between Holly's courses and the videos that you've created (plus just trail and error on my part) I've come a long way in my understanding of writing and what works for me since I first started. Thank you for all the work you do creating videos and workbooks to help others like me ❤
Oh this video inspired me. I remember the full out series you did-but want to rewatch now. I swear sometimes Preptober seems more fun than November! Lol I’m a planner so it’s up my alley-shoot, November makes me accountable and I have to be a grown-up! 😜
Thank you so much for this video. I am working on the first book of a fantasy series and thanks to your advice I am putting into practice a more conscious writing. Thank you! 🥰
This came at the right time. I’m writing a fantasy- mystery tetralogy. (I’m an aspiring writer) And not sure about what kind of series it would fall under. As the titular prince is actually the Main character. (Who doesn’t know it yet)
I just thought of a creative diagram for how I could outline my story threads for my book series. Looks a little silly, but I like it and sketched out an example on paper. I'm kind of a picture person :)
Hi I have your newsletter and I love your videos. I do have a question. Do you have a video on growing your audience. I am a self published author of two books. I love this video because the 2nd book I wrote is going to be a series. I didn't exactly know where I was going with how I was go about the second book in the series. I have a little following but that's just family and friends. I would love your advice.
I'm working on a series I feel can go past trilogy. Also have in the pipe individual books on the character's. Thise books would end with where they pop up in series.
Though I'm still working on Book 1 (with plans to work on book 2 next month), it will be a series. I know what the ending will be already though I have no idea of book/story count. Barbara
Exactly what I’m looking for… series!! I’ve heard of hitting beats in stories but do these “beats” apply to series books, too? Primarily wondering for the first book in a series. 🤔 Thank you for covering this topic! ❤️
Yes! The story beats will apply to every single book in your series separately! Definitely check out my full series on planning a series if you have time. I go into more detail in this video specifically. th-cam.com/video/Uu__SfLKtHQ/w-d-xo.html
Great video. Is there any chance you can do an updated deep dive into series writing with more than one video? Like you said, resources for series writing is hard to find. You gave valuable information here, but I feel it's barely scratching the surface. Thank you so much, Sarra.
HB90 Planners? Yes! They usually release in December, but I'm going to try to have them on Etsy before the end of November this year. If you mean a 2023 planner lineup video, yes, that will come in early December!
It's indie writer blasphemy, but I don't understand the point of nanowrimo. If I do a rush job I'll just have to go back and fix everything anyway, what am I really accomplishing?
Writing 50,000 words in a month should not be considered a rush job. It’s only 1600+ words per day. It’s not about doing a rush job, it’s about setting a goal and having motivation to keep up a pace of writing. Plan ahead according to what works for you so you’re ready. And 50,000 words is not an absolute - adjust it up or down to your pace. If you dive in to Nanowrimo, just knowing many others are doing that same is very motivational for a lot of people.
Totally understand your point of view here, and I don't think it's blasphemy! Lots of people don't really vibe with Nano, and that's fine. The point is just to help you get words on the page in a community setting. If you aren't the kind of writer who feels you can write anything useable in 1667 a day, then no big deal. But for a lot of people, the community and goal aspect of it gives us a real boost and reason to sit down and start writing. This is part of why I try to stress that everyone's process is different. For many people, overthinking can be such a big issue, as well as perfectionism. Trying to write 100 perfect words a day can be crippling. For a lot of those writers, giving themselves permission to not be perfect and just write can mean 1500+ great words per day that can be edited later. It's all a matter of perspective.
"People don't want to see hero(ine)s go through a character arc and overcome something, only to butt back up against it in the next book." Pleeeeeeease tell this to the Kingdom Hearts story writers. Every single game is Sora having to overcome the same thing again (he loses magic and strength just to have to gain it back all over again). Loved the story when I was a kid, but now it's annoying lol

You are always right on time. My writer's soul needed this one today.
So happy to hear this!
I am writing a series, so please... do more series writing videos🙂 Thank you for this video.
Yes showing the process on this would be so helpful and appreciated
I just finished the first book in a series I started a few months ago. Thanks for the great advice! Love watching your videos

Loved this Video especially the background, so many tips and insight thank you so much Sarra!
It's no surprise it's taking you some time to finish book 12! Holy moly that's a lot to keep a handle on. 😅

Gasp. An in-person retreat would be incredible!!!!

@@HeartBreathings Thank you for sending this video! ❤️ I’m new to all your stuff (and joining) and marathoning your videos. 😁 Writing vibes.
Very helpful information

There is a full playlist of maybe 7 videos in a series about writing series along with a workbook in the description!
Spot On!!! Thanks to you - xo
Will you have 2023 planners?
HB90 Planners? Yes! They usually release in December, but I'm going to try to have them on Etsy before the end of November this year. If you mean a 2023 planner lineup video, yes, that will come in early December!
@@HeartBreathings yes the HB90 planner, I'm a baby author and an author friend of mine said I had to try HB90. I will definitely be looking for it!

If you're looking for video ideas, I would love a video/series on subplots

Haha, yes!! It is so annoying. Growth is important!
