Crash of my Eflite Carbon Z T28 Trojan

  • Well I did it again, I was on the wrong side of the power line! Only this time instead of a little jet, I crashed my biggest , most expensive plane...the Eflite Carbon Z T28 Trojan. I wanted this bird for years!! But , completely my fault. I was so caught up in a great final landing approach that I was not being spatially aware of the planes surroundings and flew directly into a power line!.....Is this the end of my Big T28? ...only a complete tear down and reassembly attempt will tell. Am I discouraged? NO!!!! Never give up, never stop the RC flying!!!!!!!!!!!
    If you aint crashing, You aint flying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Please like and subscribe !
    **excuse my bad word after the crash!!***
    Folks the well wishes and helpful responses have been AMAZING and very numerous!! I am back to work for several long shifts so I will only be able to respond to just a few each day. But I will keep responding until every one has heard from me!! MY VIEWERS are the best!!!!
    God bless!!

      Classic distance error and we've all done it... about 12 years ago this happened to me with a Hangar 9 Alpha 40 trainer and a sign out in the middle of my makeshift rc field. It was the only thing to hit and was near the landing strip and of course I hit it.
      From then on I was extremely cautious about the distance error and ever so careful of obstacles. If there are I do not lower or "pass" the plane by them until I can see a shadow or for sure know that "there's no way I can hit that."
      Its pretty hard to tell how far those power lines are in the video... and so the lesson learned is (especially with big planes) is to keep them in front of BLUE SKY only until ya know they're too close to crash into an object too far away.
      Dozens of planes and over 12 years later including 1/3 scale planes that has never happened again!
      Hope you get it back in the air. I've had pretty much all of Horizon planes and this one too! I think I have a video of the giant T-28 public on my channel- with go pro footage haha.

      Ah Pilot Robert, Thanks, This is not a loss but a reminder of being more careful when flying these wonderful machines. A pilot has a responsibility to remember that you are essentially controlling a missile of plastic, carbon, metal, and foam. I am thankful that the only causalities were my pride and the plane. Time and glue will heal both of them!

    Sorry about that crash. Btw, I've noticed you like to stand very close to where you line up for a landing. From my experience, if I were standing too close to the lineup, I'd have trouble figuring out the distance to the plane. So I always stand about 10-15ft away from where I line up my plane for a landing. That leaves me some angle to get a better idea of how far or how close I am with the plane. And 10-15ft is not too far to see if the plane is lining up properly.
    Hope you could get her flying again.

    • @FatGuyFliesRC
      @FatGuyFliesRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, so much, the perspective you speak of, that is quite helpful. Now I see there is more to the ,"Dont stand on the runway rule," than just safety. That makes a lots of sense the more I think about it. Especially since my depth perception is not always the greatest. Thanks!

    • @enzok6414
      @enzok6414 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FatGuyFliesRC Glad this could be helpful. Generally speaking I stand closer to my line up if I have a narrower runway to deal with. And 10ft is a good spot for me on the narrowest runway I’ve ever dealt with. Getting closer will give me trouble to measure the distance to the plane. Maybe you could try it with some of your more forgiving planes to see if this works for ya. Ofcoz the wider the runway the farther you could stand. Since the distance to your lineup could be pretty forgiving.
      Our club runway is identical in width with yours(maybe a couple of ft wider). I found this could be helpful when I was dealing with my F4 Phantom. Thing flys fast, so I always line it up pretty far away. And I have to set it down on the first 1/3 of the runway. So distance to the plane be come an important factor, and I had to be precise about it.
      keep flying and stay safe out there.

    When I saw the title I was wondering how do you crash such a gentle flyer?
    The answer was shocking.
    My advice when you fly a larger plane than you are used to -
    beware that it is farther away than you think because it is bigger.
    Ask me how I know - ok I'll tell you - I was coming in to make my first landing with a bigger plane than I had before, maybe you guessed it - I landed in the grass 10 feet before I got to the runway - lesson learned.
    Now when I fly a bigger than I've had before I stand right at the start of the runway the first landing so I get a better idea of her distance from the start of the runway.
    I bought this 2.0m T-28 last week and it is bigger than previous planes I have owned. So I took my own advice and had a good landing. Glad I listened to me and learned from someone else's mistake - ha, see what I did there !
    Warning the foam thickness is paper thin right where it needs to be thick and strong above the retracts. The used T-28 I bought was repaired on one side where the retract punched thru - probably on a hard landing - and had a crack on the other side. So I have reinforced that weak area to prevent future punching thru.
    I think this plane should have stronger rods and clevis to support such a big plane -
    what do you suggest to use ?

    Duke Enengy would not put the big orange balls back up after they were blown down by a hurricane. I returned the balls to them and asked that they be put back up. The supervisor said no. I have been thinking about erecting a tall pipe with a huge round ball mounted on top at the far end of the field. it would need to be at the same level as the power lines. I need to do some calculations to see how high it needs to be. Those power lines are al;most impossible to see when there are grey clouds in the background. in the meantime imagine a line between those 2 power poles and dont let the glidepath descend below that imaginary line until your aircraft is halfway between the power lines and the end of the runway. just my 2 cents.

      @@FatGuyFliesRC I was thinking yesterday when I maidened the Eflite Viper (0 trim required) after all the poor setups, after ALL THE CRASHES, things are getting better and more the way they should be. There was one turn in particular back into the wind, (not sure what the issue was- wind, numb fingers, a little spitting rain, sleet and snow) but the Viper didn’t like it and was headed for the ground. 6 months ago the Viper would’ve been a pile of spare parts. If there’s any benefit of crashing early and often in my career, there’s not much I haven’t seen, and lots of recovery moves are now in muscle memory. I’m going with this new sense of confidence. Helps me sleep at night. And the Post Dramatic Stress Disorder I suffer from after 5 years of crashing, I’m never comfortable with a plane in the air. I’m constantly expecting the unexpected. It’s AFTER I land that the “WOW! That was fun!” kicks in. Good thing I enjoy the builds and repairs as much as I enjoy the “after flight” euphoria.

    What a shame I would plan on saving that plane for a winter repair project.

    Dang; so sorry...seems like when I fly something bigger, it doesn't seem that far away :-) ... a little plywood in the front, good to go...

    I clicked on this to see how you managed to crash an almost crash proof plane. But I get it now, aging eyes. I have same problem. As I get older my depth perception is going to hell. Been there, done that, too often. You can fix it

      Yeah getting older just sucks but I have found I handle things better like this crash. Perhaps I am actually growing up...lol!!!
