    Hello my friend, i could use some help. I have a Mercury Monterey custom 1962, this vehicle has a generator with a regulator with exterior voltage already integrated. I'm trying to put an alternator instead of a generator. My question is how can I connect the alternator and eliminate the use of the regulator part. I was watching a video that you posted where you explain the different connections. This regulator has only 3 connections AR, FL, and BAT. My alternator is the same as in your video with 3 exits. How should conect it ? , Hopefully you can help me.

      The beauty of GM alternators is that they're all the same size dimensionally through the 70s and 80s, except for diesels. The easiest way to pick one, is to get one from a truck. 1979 would be a good year. If you have rear defrost or power windows, get a high amp option. If you have no electrical options, a mere 36 amp alternator will be fine.

    • @mongrott
      @mongrott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'd want a 63 amp or lower from an early 80's squarebody/g body etc.. The optional 80 amp truck alternator is NOT the same dimensions, it requires a different bracket

      @chriscraft77022  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i quit rebuilding alternators like 18 years ago... i just warranty them out at oreilly if they go bad.. externally regulated is NOT the way to go.. the external regulators are over $60 the reman alternator is like $50

    • @mongrott
      @mongrott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chriscraft77022 Oh, I agree that internally regulated is great, but when I can rebuild one for $20 with bearings and brushes made in USA, I would rather spend $20 than spend $50 for one that's made in China on my personal vehicle. Internal regulators last a very long time, its just a pain of one does happen to die. For a customer's car, internal is 100% the way to go.

    Awesome man thank you. I picked up a 72 Pontiac Ventura for my sons first car and it was having a charging issue. Previous owner put a new alternator on it but left the original regulator so it was only charging around 12 volts or just under. She’s charging fine now but I still have the generator dummy light on. Any reasons you can think of as to why? Not a big deal he can drive it as is.

    I did install new alternator & have it wired thru the OG-stock regulator but it still has a voltage drain at the hot alternator lug? I seen you use a diode & thought maybe that is the solution? Could you tell me what is the amperage/size diode I should use, or other solutions? I did a diode test between cable & battery, it did work but not sure it won't burn up as I start vehicle? Thank you.

    So. I have original 1966 wiring for a external regulator. Alt on left side of engine. Crate engine alt is on right side of engine. New alt is a one wire. Is this the same process to eliminate the external regulator?

      @chriscraft77022 . Looks like I might have figured it out, but my voltage to the battery while charging is.a.little over 1 volt lower through original wiring vs direct connection to battery.

      Chris, I did voltage regulator, 1 wire alternator and no matter where I put white and blue wire on the alternator the generator light comes on with the key off. Something is not right. Everything is new, can you help.

    The new one is has the 3 wire inputs, but I did try your one wire method with exciter wire but getting voltage drain. Then I changed setup with old wires & jumpers across the regulator plug yet still I have voltage drain, but when I disconnect hot alt wires it stops drain? Not sure alternator is bad?

    • @chriscraft77022

      you don’t test an alternator by taking the wires off. #2 has to be connected at all times or you will overcharge

    4:20 When you pry back the "keeper" tabs on the female brass terminal connector you MUST be very careful to NOT be too ROUGH or HEAVY handed with them. Don't pry them back VERY far either they WILL snap off. These are the keeper tabs that the video instructor mentioned 3:31 about halfway through the video that you push down on to cause them to "disengage" on the inside of the original alternator's ( white ) plastic connection plug. SO BEFORE you insert each wire into the plastic connection plug for the NEWER style, internally regulated alternator - you HAVE TO pry the "keeper" tab, of each wire, back outward so that when you insert the wire into the new plastic connection plug it will be "kept" in place. You'll feel it "click" when you've pushed it in far enough. That will indicate that it's inserted far enough and will stay inserted. You can gently pull back on each wire after you've inserted them to TEST whether or not the keeper tab had indeed "grabbed onto" it's companion mounting surface inside the plastic connection plug.

      Chris, do you have a FB page?
      Or another contact Like an email? On my alt side the wires aren't right. There's a red wire on the clip meaning where you push the fittings into the slot. The red they have going to the post on the backside of the alt. I want to try to sent you a pic. Ken

      So looking at my wires on my alt, and I think this is wrong. In the plug position, meaning the number 1 that one they have wired, with a wire going to the back post-power of the alt. In yr diagrams that wire should be the number two position. My Gauge reads only 12:3 volts only.

    I have a ‘66 Chevy and bought it a new starter, alternator, and alternator regulator. the battery kept dying over time. Checked for drains but there wasn’t any. The alternator wasn’t giving the extra 2 Vs, so we bought a new one. New one didn’t either. I’m trying this out. Thanks

    I had a 1966 Chevy 2 (Nova) station wagon back in the late 1980's it had a bad voltage regulator and putting the new one in and "balancing" the strength of the magnetic field in the ( external regulator ) was a pain in the ass. I said to myself: there's got to be a WAY to put the more modern version of A/C Delco, internally regulated alternator on an pre 1973 Chevy ( or other G.M. vehicle ) I was thinking about it again tonight 3 am, Saturday August 14th, 2021 and looked it up on TH-cam. It's so simple ! A MILLION thanks to you for this great, great video. I don't understand why ANYONE would give this a thumbs down. - Jim in Buffalo, Ny
