    I watched Lighthouse at the cinema and the whole crowd seemed completely immersed . It was like a fever dream, you feel safe in one moment, then terror in the next, then confusion and then safe again, never quite sure what is gonna happen next. Dafoe really is a versatile actor, and Pattinson's performance was a nice surprise. Looking forward to hear more on Nosferatu.

    "Crazy Vampire Hunter" had the same discomfort for me, but not because I associated it with action movies, more like because the "crazy vampire hunter" in the original Nosferatu was more expository than anything else: he stood around and explained stuff once in a while, but never really got a crack at the creature.
    If he's gonna hound Orlok around the movie, it's gonna bring a big and unwelcome shadow distracting from what should be the main action.
    Also it primes it for my fear that Lily Rose is gonna wanna fuck the monster again, too.

    Just found your channel, Dude. HUGE Robert Eggers fan here, and this has me really excited! I missed "The Witch" in movie theaters, but have watched it several times in the dark alone. I have no doubt this will be absolutely brilliant. I'm crazy about him because of his attention to detail & strict period aesthetic & wish there were more of his movies to watch. I can't see him doing insipid "vampire hunter" schtick. For no good reason I haven't watched "The Northman", but am settling in do it right now. Also excited for Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein (high hopes, anyway.... someone always does something really stupid and "interpretive" with a character or the story, it seems with Frankie), and for selfish reasons - Maggie Gyllenhaal's Bride of Frankenstein that I just did 4 days on, but can't say anything about! It's going to be nuts - not really anything like this, but a unique interpretation. Cheers!

The Northman was maybe my least favourite film of his but still a good watch but damn, I hadn't heard of the upcoming Bride of Frankenstein film which could be fun. I also forgot that Guillermo del Toro was making Frankenstein until you said. I just hope it weighs more on the side of horror and slightly less of his fantastical and fairy tale approach, but who am I to judge, he's a genius haha!. Let's not forget Dafoe was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 2000 indie film SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE about a fictionalized making of NOSFERATU. As the great Camille Paglia says, "the vampire...dominates the plane of eye contact. High Gothic is abstract and ceremonious. Evil has
    become world-weary, hierarchical glamour. There is no bestiality. The theme is eroticized western power, the burden of history. The Hunger (1983) comes close to being a masterpiece of this genre but is ruined by
    horrendous errors, as when the regal Catherine Deneuve is made to crawl around on all fours, slavering over cut throats. Please. Butchery is not the point of vampirism. Sex-domination and submission-is. Gothic horror must be moderated by Apollonian discipline, or it turns into gross buffoonery."
    This is why the greatest vampire scene in the last 92 years is the hypnotic disco ball kissing scene from A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. Eggers has proved he can create these scenes of slow haunting power like the baby sacrifice in THE WITCH and that movie's final scene of the coven in the woods. There's nothing creepier than Count Orlock but he can be ruined as the made-for-TV "Salem's Lot" showed. I very much suspect we'll be ok with Eggers, who seems very visual and very adept at the slow burn and less interested in Hammer Horror style butchery. And he is the producer here as well.

    • @ENTERTAINtheDUDE
      @ENTERTAINtheDUDE  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Salem's Lot started with promise but then became very trivial quite rapidly. You also just reminded me that I absolutely have to sit down soon and watch Shadow of the vampire. I'm with you on the promise that Eggers may be able to do his thing and elevate this film above the usual tropes and clichés we always see with vampire films. I sense that this project is what he has been gearing towards for some time now.

    • @edwardrichardson8254
      @edwardrichardson8254 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ENTERTAINtheDUDE I actually love Salem's Lot as a long-lost miniseries from the TV land I grew up in and I absolutely love James Mason no matter how old he is. The intro of Mr. Barlow (the Nosferatu rip) in the kitchen and the jail are two jump scenes for the ages. Again tho... this is antithetical to the Gothic decorum you want. Eggers said he shot NOSFERATU when was 17 or something, which I believe as it's one of those films along w/ SUNRISE in the beginning of those big film history books they used to sell in bookstores. But Count Orlock is just so alien-looking. It's easy to run w/ a smooth operator/handsome Count Dracula but this guy looks like a giant man-rat. Eerie seduction has to be everything. There is nothing horrific in Christopher Lee hypnotically seducing some buxom Hammer wench, there is horror in this thing doing it. Legosi might move around among armadillos in the coffin scene of DRACULA (they shot in California) but Orlock looks like he belongs among nocturnal things.
      Read the incredible "THE WATCHERS" by the Irish neo-Gothic novelist A. M. Shine, he's like one of those things.

    In fact, it would be ridiculous to see Dafoe in CGI, somersaulting through the air! I believe the most appropriate term for this "vampire hunter" is paranormal investigator, not an established profession, but someone knowledgeable about the occult...

    • @ENTERTAINtheDUDE
      @ENTERTAINtheDUDE  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. An early 19th century version of a paranormal investigator as you say. Experience and wisdom are their only weapons, otherwise he should have no defence against such a creature so the film stays mature. Certainly no somersaulting for sure, maybe a hop and a skip tops ;)

    Hold on, hold on, wait. This is my first time on this channel, so maybe you've mentioned before, but how do you make a video centered around a photo of Willem Dafoe in a Nosferatu remake, without mentioning that one time when he was in a film that won the Bram Stoker award for best screenplay. Maybe the most unique vampire film ever, and definitely my favorite, in large part because of Dafoe, who won 4 out of 6 nominations for best supporting actor (the Oscar went to DelTorro) for his cold, heartbreaking, and sometimes hilarious performance as the mysterious Max Schrek, the ultimate method actor who only appears on set in full makeup and character as Count Orlock.
    Maybe nobody's mentioned it because you've all seen it a bazillion times, and are like, "DUH, dude," but just in case, I'll say that yes, the film is VERY loosely based on the true story about the filming of Nosferatu and not another word.

      I mean it’s not automatically a bad thing to be more politically correct but Eggers likes to show very honest and accurate portrayals of history so we don’t really have anything to worry about unless he starts romanticizing the messed up stuff. And political correctness as well as what some call hollywoodization or sanitation is kinda like POTC where our main pirates aren’t as brutal as they were irl or like how Greek gods tend to be shown as heroic unless they’re a villain when they’re pretty messed up in the myths. That’s all usually if it’s done well in a fun way but it can also be way too sanitized and lame. Especially if they’re advertising it as an accurate history piece. Hell, Shrek is literally about body positivity and shit like that and Disney wanted to move away from ugly women as evil villains cuz they got shit for it (kinda understandable) but then there’s the point where it’s like how the guy who made age ratings didn’t even want people to kiss, bleed, fight, show too much skin, or literally anything in movies. It’s just lame and unnecessarily limits the art they wanna make. Or can be horribly misguided and become the opposite of politically correct and become bigoted just cuz of an overcorrection or someone pretending to be progressive. Like how some people think feminism is just being antagonistic towards men when it’s supposed to be equality. Like imagine if Richard Watterson or any dumb dad trope wasn’t just a funny joke and was meant to be a lesson on how dads just are like this
