    Thanks for posting this, I think a lot of us can relate. I used to play competitive golf. There's definitely a progression. Driving range swing -> golf course swing->good scoring->competitive golf. Most will fail at every level before finally succeeding.
    Your shanks probably came from the nerves changing muscle tension and in turn the timing. It's weird how the body behaves differently under pressure even though we think we are doing the exact same thing. More competition is the best medicine, but might be impractical. A consistent routine, tempo, breathing and just letting go the exact same way in practice as in competition is key. After this tournament, with it all fresh in your head can you go out an mimic the stress in a practice round? We used to try to make practice as real as possible. Congratulations on getting through tournament golf on camera! That takes some guts!

      Thanks for the kind words and recommendations. It's funny, I've played a combined 10-20 tournament rounds and this is the only one where the shanks have ever come out. Could be a combination of the things you mentioned :)

    I can relate. Last 4 rounds were 77, 85, 90... and today a 99 😭 I thought the 85 was a setback, and then golf informed me that it is still golf, and I still have a lot to learn.

    • @NotAScratchGolfer
      @NotAScratchGolfer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Nah, didn't feel pressure to play fast, really, save for the 3rd hole when our group was looking for several stray balls and marching back and forth across the fairway. I'm generally a fast player.

      The golden rule i follow in a competitive round is play your shot first - go through your routine etc. THEN help them look for their ball. You are doing them a favour by helping look it is NOT your first priority.

    Adam, I played Langara that afternoon. Tough conditions, and those greens were rock hard. I didn't hear about many good rounds out there and I certainly didn't see many on the leaderboard. Good on you for posting this tough tournament round, but everyone should know big scores weren't the exception that day.

    • @NotAScratchGolfer
      @NotAScratchGolfer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Langara always seems to be the sneaky one in the mix at the Van Open. They had it running pretty tough and the consistent 3+ club wind was a lot to handle.

    2 words: That’s Golf. Man, I’ve been playing in more casual, competitive rounds this year and the pressure has gotten the best of me too. As a matter of fact, I’ve got an event this weekend that I’m trying to get ready for. I’ve just learned to let go of any expectations and just go out and enjoy a round of golf.

    I can relate and it also scares me for myself ever trying to play in this.
    I once got the tee time just after the last tournament group at langara a few years back.
    I got to the front edge of the green of #1 in 2. Joked to my buddies oh I wish I was playing in the vancouver open too haha.
    Then bladed my ball off the back of the green and lost it. Glad I wasn't pretty quick.

    Reassuring for me/us to witness this. Thxs for posting it. My worst rounds also seem to always come on comps. Was playing around 12 HC on 5 rounds during the two weeks leading to the comp but shot 20 over on the comp... Unconscious self inflicted pressure, adrenaline, feel of the coming downward spiral all lead to "unbelievable" (not in a good way) shots and weird judgments! Competitive rounds are definitely a different game. However, just managed 2nd place at club on a stableford round, so... not giving up.

    If you ever have an official tell you to hurry up, the first thing you need to work on is your pace of play before anything else on the course. Nothing more rude in a tournament than a. Someone may who probably shouldnt be there and b. A bad golfer (tournament standards) making everyone wait.

      Agreed. FWIW, we were warned on the 3rd hole because both of my playing partners hit *multiple* stray balls up the right + I had to march back to the left for my ball (which turned out not to be my ball), yada yada yada. From there on out we were fine for time. I was really impressed that the tournament officials managed to keep pace at 4 hours throughout the tournament.
