Hiya Andy it’s the first time I have seen you, what a lovely refreshing video, down to earth and simple to understand and learn from thank you lol r&g x
Here since the Tiger Woods video. Great insight on your fitting vid too, I love the in-depth look that you give to golf. I Just started playing earlier this summer, looking forward to seeing your video with your clubs as well. Loving the content. 👌
That was really interesting and some great thoughts / tips that got me thinking about my game and playing much more percentage golf and giving yourself room for error, such as the play to the back of the green or the dispersion area off your tee shots as you showed with the drone. You played solid golf and had a good score going - it isn't all about striping it 300 yards off the tee etc. You also got me thinking I should read the Bob Rotella books I have on my shelf, ha ha!! Good stuff Andy and I'll check out some more of your videos.👍
This is a great video mate. Definitely won a new subscriber. And the improvement is remarkable pal. Iv been stuck at 12 hcp for ages. Inspiring well done 👍
most helpful thing for me has been monitoring my face contact as a feedback loop. yea you can work on positions etc. but if you aren't hitting the clubface in the middle it won't do any good. thats the feedback loop that has helped me the most
Top man! Amazing how so many of us have read Rotella, know about playing the yardage at the back of the green but we still let our massive egos take over! Love the 'gate' at the end. I think you're a natural communicator, really enjoying your work, thanks. 🙏
It's good to see the reference to Golf Sidekick..hes just awesome at explaining course management and playing smarter to score lower 👍 First time watching your channel, enjoyed the content!
Great video! I love how these tips can apply to *anyone* playing golf, not just good golfers and not just bad golfers. (As a 28 handicap, my shot dispersion is massive, so that tip is hard to incorporate, but it still makes sense!)
I absolutely loved the drone footage with the shot dispersion. I would love to see more of that!!!! Like playing a round from a drone talking through your course management.
1st time come across you Andy but really loved this video…..like you said, really refreshing to hear a normal golfer talking to normal golfers, especially around course management and psychology
Great tips for us average golfers Andy. I never thought of using the back of green number vs the number to the flag. Dying to try that out my next round and hope to drop a few strokes!
it's mental to me how I can watch every video of this without having played golf in such a long time, would love a video on tips for people new to golf!
Really liked that first putting drill mate , definitely going to be giving that one a go as complete beginner even I can see that being useful once out on the greens!
Love that you touch in the practice makes perfect! I had a college wrestling coach who use to tell use practice makes habit, perfect practice makes perfect! Awesome mentality to have!
I'm a big fan of golf sidekick. This was an excellent video. My HC is down to 13.5 from about 20 in the last year. Hoping to be a single digit next season. Cheers from a new subscriber in California.
Nice video and good content. The only thing I would add to the recommendation to club up on approach shots to hedge to the back of the green is that this certainly needs to be qualified by whether there is danger behind the green. There are a quite a few holes on my home course where going off the back is a recipe for easily adding 1 or 2 strokes to the hole and the safer play is winding up short. Like you, I have learned from Sidekick and others and have dropped 10-12 shots.
Jon Sherman’s “Four Foundations of Golf” is a great book. A combination of course management and analytics. He refers back to Mark Brodie’s book “Every Shot Counts”. I’ve enjoyed following your journey to single digits …
Great video👍🏻. You’re putting setup looked exactly like mine. Hands down the grip. Bent over. Honestly, I have changed it in my last few rounds ( bit of setup practice on a mat and perfect putt at home). It has made a big difference. Stand up straighter. Hand at top of the grip. Ball will be couple of inches closer to your toes. You can still look down over the ball without bending. The fulcrum of putt stroke will feel more relaxed with less tension and more stable and the biggest plus is you will feel the weight of the head more. The putters grip is that length for a reason- is what I have learned. Give it a try
Great tips Andy. Cheers. Definitely applying this into my game and practice. Got a lesson on Monday too (already had booked haha). My driver is awful at the mo and I know I'm doing something wrong as it used to be the best part of my game. 🙈🙈
Still don't love the shoes😂😂. But I do love my Ping G425's and I see you're playing with them to. The Arcoos system with these clubs is def an advantage if you can afford to buy the subscription. Keep it up Andy!! Even with those old man white shoes! ❤❤❤
Good tips! I would add if you were not hitting a specific club well.......then put it aside and use your "go to club" instead to get your confidence back. Committing to the shot also helps and is part of the learning process. Play within yourself and make each shot a positive challenge to improve your game.
These are really great tips. I'm a 2.5hcp now, but these are almost ALL the things I did, and the mindset I would have on my way down. I have a smaller dispersion on my irons now, so I'm more often going at specific distances, but on approaches, I'm often still saying "What's the distance to the back?".
Im liking this channel very much , i’d just like to say that about half way through you chipped a seven rather than leather a wedge , thats a good play but its important for me that those lay up shots are properly targeted and focused on as much as a shot into a green . Too many times ive just taken those for granted and either hit into a crap area , gone way offline or even fatted or thinned them because basically im not committed to anything and my brain gives me nothing in return 🤷🏻♂️
Very useful video. Like the 3:20 comment, made me remember a reverse situation. Once, after just gotten a new putter, I actually birdied the first 2 holes of my course - however it made me try and play hero shots the rest of the round with predictable outcome, LOL. Funny old game. This season I try to stick to the Matty Boom Boom 'boring is scoring' motto. Much more reliable strategy.
I watched your videos for the first time yesterday. I noticed something about your swing which is what I would describe as a hard left exit after contact, if you get what I mean. Club path after contact exiting left. I thought about this on the range today and tried more than I would normally do to do this. Real improvement to strike. Thanks. 👍
The 7 iron chip shot on that lie is such a good idea. Immediately thinking back to a round I had where I was 160 out and had a lie with ball lower than me and a sliced it so far right I ended up with a 7. Prob could have bumped it and made bogey.
Great video and tips, thanks. But in your putting feeling drill I would include two things in your explanation: 1) almost always the green has slope; and 2) grass direction.
Andy, firstly I love the videos. You are so relatable as your just an average bloke wanting to get better at golf like the rest of us. My handicap is currently 6.9, so I'm a decent player but still a lot of room for improvement. unfortunately, I disagree with always going for the back of the green. In my opinion playing to the center of the green regardless of pin position gives you the biggest margin for error. You have all for escape options, front, back, left and right. the last time I played at the Belfry, the starter told us that the week prior to us being there they had done an experiment with the college golfers that attend the golf school, where they removed the flag from all of the greens. he told us that on average there scores were three shots less per round that week. this was due to them trying to hit the middle of the green on every hole. Keep on grafting mate, hope to see you even lower soon :) Luke
That is very interesting tbf I agree playing to centre in terms of direction, I basically always aim at the middle of the green, but will often play the club that’ll reach the back in terms of distance Because when you don’t always stripe it like a college golfer a slight mishit will still have the distance to reach the green Maybe it’ll change as I get better and my club for the back consistently goes over the back, but I find that works really well atm when my yardages can vary shot to shot
@@AndyCastellGolf thanks for the reply bud, I don't disagree that playing the longer club gives you a better chance of reaching if you miss hit a shot. we all do that as amateurs. i guess it varies from player to player. I would say irons are the strongest part of my game and wedge play isn't as good. Keep the great videos coming mate :)
@@luketaylor92 Sort of agree with both opinions here. That test at Belfry, albeit interesting, doesn't relate to the average golfer as their game is no where near college level. Andy actually proved it in the second hole, he clubbed up hit a "poor shot" from his standards and it was just off the front. If he'd hit his club that goes middle of green yardage and hit the same poor shot he'd have been 20 odd yards shorter. However, all depends on the shot, if there's danger going long or if pin placement benefits short then you don't club up. Suppose it just comes down to course management.
@@AJR-gg There is no doubt at all that the college golfers are at a far higher standard than the average amateur. but even at their level 3 shots better per round is massive. I by no means am a brilliant golfer, my England golf handicap is 6.9 and I do hit fat shots from time to time which come up short, so I do also agree with Andy in the correct situation. I will give it a go this weekend in the October medal on Saturday and extra stableford on Sunday to see if it does have an impact on how I score. It may convert me forever :)
@@AndyCastellGolf where you aim depends on green depth and your dispersion. For example greens 40 yards deep are different from greens 25 yards deep. Some course designers allow you to run a ball onto the green and punish you if you are long. You have a wedge into to a pin that’s 15 yards off front and 25 yards to the back with little trouble short, what’s your strategy? I’m pin hunting.
Pleasure following your journey - thank you. The only problem for me - who’s looking for a similar TH-cam golfer (I’m a 14 handicap but improving), is that all you guys on these channels hit the ball so damn far! My 7 iron goes about 140 carry, and that’s a different game. But not much you can do about that…!
I like the 7 iron for 100 yards tip. I can't use all tips like the dispersion one because of my lack of consistency. I'm 17 handicap and play 10 times a year.
Question as a beginner golfer! I know the general answer is just to go out and play more, but how do I properly transition from playing off the mats at a driving range, and moving to grass at a course? At the range I’m dialed, I know my distances for each club, I feel comfortable. At a course, I tee off, 2nd shot is a comfortable 8 iron away, but I can’t seem to get a consistent shot off. The feel of hitting a shot off of the fairway feels so wildly different from the range and I get so discouraged when what should be an easy comfortable shot to the green takes 3 shots to get up.
My two guesses would be: The mats are flat and aim for you, fairways aren’t and don’t, you need to learn how to adjust your swing for different terrain and to set up properly without the mat guiding you But more likely is that, you aren’t actually as dialled as you think, you can get away with ALOT of bad shots on a mat Took me ages to be able to properly compress the ball because I’d done so much mat practice where you can get away with hitting the floor 2 inches behind the ball and then skidding along it to hit, only way to fix that is go out of an evening when it’s quiet and practice on the course
2:04 yes hit back of green IF flag is in back. On small greens yes, some of courses I play have 40m long greens with big swales and slopes, so if flag is at front of a big sloping green, being at back is certain 3 putt, so GIR is irrelevant, which means might be better to hit to front edge and chip up .
Great video, only thing I disagreed with was the putting drill with the two clubs. There's not a single person on earth that swings a putter "straight back and straight through" its an arc just like every other swing, just take a look at every putting practice mat that gives you one of those lines for the swing path. Putting the ball through a tee gate a few inches ahead would be much better, just to ensure you're hitting the start line.
Yeah you’re right, this is why I don’t really like people giving mechanical tips online, as it’s so nuanced for every player, I just shared these two as everyone has been asking me The reason I do it is because my putter path used to be basically a figure 8 😂 So aiming for a much more controlled straight back and through, even if it does arc a little was a huge improvement for me
Andy, when do you get your new clubs!? I've been waiting for the first round with them. I am really excited to see the improvements that come with the fitted equipment.
I got them last week They’re used for the first time in the video with Peter Crouch (out next week) And I’m filming a break 80 with them tomorrow (as long as the monsoon in Liverpool stops)
In case you want to drop another shot or two, read Percy Bommer's On Learning Golf, 1942, chapter 'On putting'. All others too: read that book if you want to understand your own swing!
I have no doubt Andy, you will make a great TH-cam golfer. Hopefully, you will get one hundred thousand subscribers by the middle of next year. Keep up the good work 👏
Hey Andy, first of all, I love the content. But I have a question, I really need help with my channel. I don’t know what to do, do I need better equipment?
Golf Sidekick is my Sensei as well. A couple of comments. Your 1st piece of advice may not be appropriate for all golf courses. The depth of my greens is 36-40 yards. That means there’s at least a two club difference between a back and front pin. My course also has fairway in front of the greens and usually thicker rough on the back of the green. So if you go over the green you’re short-sided on a back pin and chipping out of rough so you’re guessing how hard to hit the ball and judge the spin. With a miss short of the green. You have a relatively easy chip. I follow Golf Sidekick on this one. I know my shot dispersion and pick the best target based on my shot dispersion. While I agree with point 2, you missed an opportunity to mention what Matty Boom Boom preaches in almost every video. Don’t hit a club you don’t have confidence in.
When is the next golf video Andy. My only worry for you with this series is that you’ll drop focus like sometimes with the RTG etc. Stay at it and keep the momentum going. The content is great.
@@AndyCastellGolf only well intended feedback mate. I want the channel to succeed for you. But you know the algorithms and more importantly what you want from the channel better than anyone else. It’s not a comment for my purpose, just a supporting one to say that I appreciate what you create and I’m happy to keep supporting.
Nice video, thanks. However, I would disagree about dispersion. A lot of mid-high handicap golfers, like myself, do think about dispersion but our dispersion is VASTLY greater than what you had on screen, and WAY moreso than any pro. I could fade ( slice ) my driver or 3 wood 150+ yards right or pull draw them 100 yards left. That means there are very few areas on my golf course at least whereby the dispersion cone is all within range of a decent result! I absolutely think about it and it helps when hitting shorter clubs that have far less dispersion but with longer clubs it can too often be of little value unfortunately
Hi Andy. I have really enjoyed watching your golf journey since you took up the wonderful game of golf. But I am a little confused with your handicap score. How have you managed to get it down to 5.2 when you haven't broken 80 on a golf course yet ? I'm genuinely not trying to be rude to you but can you help me to understand this conundrum ? Cheers Den
I tried the playing the back of the green it got e in the green so much more. A few times I was out over by others I was goo because the hit wasn’t the best but by taking enough cub I made it on
Generally going for the back of the green isn't a bad idea, but I know at least a couple of holes on my home course where hitting the back or just behind the green means you're in the bushes or in a hazard zone. Being short just means you'll have to chip from the fairway. Way more comfortable shot.
Just discovered this. Tomorrow I'm playing a course I've never played, one that purports to be "The oldest on the Continent". I'll let y'all know how it goes.
@@AndyCastellGolfAfter seeing how you were striking them in the fitting video, i imagine you’ll be dropping some more shots in the near future. Keep it up.
Until I can confidently make solid contact every time and the only thing I have to worry about is club choice and wind I don't even keep score. I only play for solid shots. If I hit it solid and it felt good I'm happy no matter where it ends up.

Yeah you’re right, this is why I don’t really like people giving mechanical tips online, as it’s so nuanced for every player, I just shared these two as everyone has been asking me
The reason I do it is because my putter path used to be basically a figure 8 😂
So aiming for a much more controlled straight back and through, even if it does arc a little was a huge improvement for me
Andy, when do you get your new clubs!? I've been waiting for the first round with them. I am really excited to see the improvements that come with the fitted equipment.
I got them last week
They’re used for the first time in the video with Peter Crouch (out next week)
And I’m filming a break 80 with them tomorrow (as long as the monsoon in Liverpool stops)
@@AndyCastellGolf Hooray!
Love your stuff your going places and very likeable (even for a scouser😂) ..chipping tips next its fantastic
😂🖕🏻
Thanks mate
In case you want to drop another shot or two, read Percy Bommer's On Learning Golf, 1942, chapter 'On putting'. All others too: read that book if you want to understand your own swing!
Jack is the Best golfer of time!
How many rounds did you play to move your handicap over 10 strokes in 30 days!
I have no doubt Andy, you will make a great TH-cam golfer. Hopefully, you will get one hundred thousand subscribers by the middle of next year. Keep up the good work 👏
I used to be a member here 2 seasons ago. Thinking of re joining looking like it’s in great condition
Andy, what golf trolley do you have? I loved that you could prop your phone up!
Hey Andy, first of all, I love the content. But I have a question, I really need help with my channel. I don’t know what to do, do I need better equipment?
Nice work 🎉
New here... Great video. Very helpful. 👍
It’s not a series mate I just like golf 😂
There’s another video in the next day or so (I’ve been super busy with FC25)
@@AndyCastellGolf only well intended feedback mate. I want the channel to succeed for you. But you know the algorithms and more importantly what you want from the channel better than anyone else.
It’s not a comment for my purpose, just a supporting one to say that I appreciate what you create and I’m happy to keep supporting.
helps to be able to play all day!
Love the practice is permanent comment. So true
Formby hall.... Jack was the best of his generation, Tiger was the best of his generation... great tips btw...
I dropped 10 shots too 0:43 ...by stopping after hole 17!
Great Vid!
Cheers Den
My course is so stupidly hard that shooting 9 over is the equivalent of a 5hcp
I tried the playing the back of the green it got e in the green so much more. A few times I was out over by others I was goo because the hit wasn’t the best but by taking enough cub I made it on
I think it’s better to pick the club that puts you in the middle of the green. If aim at the back and hit it to hard you could be in trouble
If a summary of the 5 points can be displayed at (near) the end of the video, it would be priceless.
Im really interested in videos about sport pyscology
Generally going for the back of the green isn't a bad idea, but I know at least a couple of holes on my home course where hitting the back or just behind the green means you're in the bushes or in a hazard zone. Being short just means you'll have to chip from the fairway. Way more comfortable shot.
I mean yeah you’ve gotta use your brain with it, but most people just look at the flag
which golf trolley does andy have, anyone?
Hello mate, would you rather play Augusta National or pack prime R9?
Augusta 10000%
@@AndyCastellGolfbut what about R9 on the RTG?!
Just discovered this. Tomorrow I'm playing a course I've never played, one that purports to be "The oldest on the Continent". I'll let y'all know how it goes.
Man 10 shots would put me under par every time I go out .. WOW
Oh I Will go 61-63 all time now 😮
You Said 10 shots of rite 😅
When watching your fifa channel I always used to tell myself ‘well atleast I’d beat him at golf’. Not quite sure on that either now 🤣
Nice Video
Great video. You must be kin to Paddy the Baddy
This was recorded before the fitting I assume?
Just after it, so the clubs hadn’t arrived yet
@@AndyCastellGolfAfter seeing how you were striking them in the fitting video, i imagine you’ll be dropping some more shots in the near future. Keep it up.
Until I can confidently make solid contact every time and the only thing I have to worry about is club choice and wind I don't even keep score. I only play for solid shots. If I hit it solid and it felt good I'm happy no matter where it ends up.
Some Guy called Tiger, Never used a line on his ball when putting, he didn't do too bad did he 😊
He's probably hit 5 million more balls than us average Joe's tho lol
He's Tiger. No one else in the history of earth played like him. Maybe Jack.
Tiger did use a line.
