I love Matt because he is one of the few people who have finally repeated what I have been saying for 30 years. Practice your short game! It’s not just because of the fewer shots around the green. It is because if you know you can get up and down around the green, it takes pressure off your approach shots…if pressure is taken off your approach shots, you have less pressure on the tee. Playing with less pressure makes you play a LOT better.
I know Matty has said this a lot, but I tell beginners constantly to go and just chip and pitch and putt instead of going to the range. Unfortunately, they never listen because it is not “sexy” and because they think they will just get good at short game with no other benefits…
They also don’t get that the more you get good at pitching the better contact you make on full swings.
It really is the key to getting better. I don’t let my kids take full swings until they have hit several good shots with half swings.

I think I’m the least natural ability golfer around, lack confidence and score the same way. But I’m the only golfer I play with that will actually attempt a flop shot and pull it off 8 out 10 times. (Only when needed). I love bunkers, when everyone I play with hates them. When I’m on the tee with a driver/wood in my hand I duff it 20yards in front of me at least 4 times a round screwing my score, because I believe I have no natural ability. Then get cross about it and ruining my round. But now I have just decided watching this video that I am a talented golfer, I put in the practice and I have regular lessons it’s just what’s between my ears that stops me. My skill set is actually high, I’ve just decided I will be a good golfer because I am capable of shooting low scores.

Previously a 5 handicapper and now 1000+ handicapper. I used to play almost every day and stopped for more than 15 years. I am getting back to golf. The swing is still there. Just need to freshen and tighten it up. May take a bit of time especially the short game. Yikes. Still playing older Mizuno irons, Vokey wedges and recently got a Scotty just to see what's the hullabaloo is all about. Pretty good. I am hooked.
I agree with everything you said. Many golfers think they are PGA tour players. It's nothing that fancy. Just learn the right fundamentals. Play within your capability. Practice the short game. It is all feel and takes a lot of time to get the feel and 80% of the time, you will fail . Putt with intention, learn to stabilize your putting strokes and aim for two putts. Take a bogey and move on. Forget about the Tiger Woods 20 yards winding putts into the hole.
Play to improve instead of playing for bragging rights. Most important of all, please learn golf etiquette on the course. Stop looking for your lost balls forever. Let people play through. Swallow your PGA tour player pride.

    @toddwmac 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Good stuff....thanks!
Distance Claims: The belief that many golfers drive the ball beyond 250 yards is exaggerated.
Wedge Gapping: Obsessing over precise gapping between wedges is unnecessary; focus on fitting and consistent distances.
Pre-Shot Routine: A pre-shot routine doesn’t significantly slow down the game if integrated efficiently.
Aggression in Golf: Golf is not about aggression or grinding; it’s about letting go and playing relaxed.
Proximity to Hole: Pros don’t always hit as close to the hole as people think; understanding average proximity is key.
LPGA Distance: LPGA pros’ distances are more relatable, and their tight dispersion is what leads to better scoring.
Talent Myth: The idea that talent is innate is false; practice and training are what develop golf skills.
Flow State: Achieving a flow state by getting out of your own way can lead to playing your best golf.
Putting Percentages: Understanding the actual percentages of putts made by pros from various distances can set realistic expectations.
Tour Player Distance: No tour pro is considered short; even the “short” hitters are quite long by amateur standards.
Breaking 100: Strategies for breaking 100 are not limiting; they evolve as you improve and aim for lower scores.
Course Length: A 7,000-yard course is long, and playing appropriate tees for your skill level is important.
Short Game Importance: Regardless of your long game, a strong short game is crucial for scoring.
Handicap Misunderstanding: Handicaps are based on potential, not average scores, and involve a calculation considering course difficulty.
Mental Game: It’s not just about toughness; it’s about knowing your strengths and planning your shots.
Favorite Clubs: Trusting and playing your favorite clubs can lead to better shots and scores.
Shot Planning: Understanding the shots you like and setting up your favorite distances is key.
Practice Importance: Practicing short game is essential, as you will still miss greens even as you improve.
Driver Use: Knowing when to use your driver and when to leave it in the bag is part of smart golf strategy.
Multi-Layered Thinking: Golf requires interconnected thinking; nothing is just black or white.
Mental Hurdles: Overcoming mental hurdles and trusting your ability to make putts is part of the game.

I am playing for about 15y now (handicap around 20) and still play my half set (odd ping's plus a ping 3 wood extra plus a putter, so 8 clubs!) that I bought in the beginning. I am not consistent enough for a "real" driver (but might consider a G430 max 10k if the price comes down in a few years). I am very happy playing a club that's "easy" and that I like and that am consistent with (like my 7). Many of my friends (their handicaps has stayed >>30) keep trying, far en hard every time. And then are either OoB, in the water, in the bunker, in the rough etc. etc. costing them deer points, whilst I take that extra stroke to stay in control. Happy-the-Pappy!!

One of the things I agree with you most, Matt, is the power of purposeful practice. Just going to the range and smacking balls around for an hour is not helping your game. Pick a target and a distance and play to it. Line up every shot and develop that pre-shot routine. 50 balls of purposeful practice is way more beneficial than 100 balls of just hitting shots.

putting is the most personal area of the game
what i have come to realize is there are only a couple fundamentals:
      1. dont sway
      2. keep that head still
      3. dont look to see where the ball is going out of anxiety
thats about all. how you stroke it doesnt matter the slightest. i have seen hook spin on putts, slice spin on putts, wrist stroke, mechanical stroke and overall, the only bad putters have been anxious peepers, swayers or head movers

Dude great vids but you live in an amazing place that most of us "may never" walk so when something strange falls out of the tree, you need to go into Jacques Cousteau-father/sons and or Sir David Frederick Attenborough mode because ish was hilarious yet curious to know did a leaf full of ants fall by accident or did they see you as a meal and cut the leaf or were they on a first class flight back to club house? Would love to see the wildlife and the area. I know you grill beef but the lifestyle would be nice to see. Please make your golf vids longer as a righty. Its hard to watch you as a lefty but I see myself starting out making similar swings...That's a lot but I'm the customer and the Customer is...Or is that a misconception? LOL😁

I obviously don’t exist, but I hit the ball 300+ and it’s not worth it. I’m a big guy but still not a great golfer by any means. The only round I’ve ever broken 80 was without a driver in my bag - keeping it in play is way more important than bombing it. We don’t have spectators to hit or forecaddies to help us find the ball, we can’t get away with the same level of miss that the pros do

Look.. I’ve been playing for maybe 6-7 months and I can very safely say the thing that ruins every single round for me is the negativity I induce in myself when I can’t make the shot I picture. The mental has seriously been the biggest hurdle for me. But I’m still very new to the sport so I know that these things will be ironed out with experience.

LPGA is a way better way to watch golf as a beginner. I play with a Lady Playa every weekend. Obviously, I hit my clubs farther, but she hits it in play, EVERY SINGLE SHOT, and the focus is on setup. She is about a +15. Way better than watching PGA and taking away, "I need to smash distance," to be good at golf, and being +35 HA.
