  • I did get a new car. In the end I got a 2014 Ford Fiesta, manual, 1.5L car. Not high spec, not sporty, but cheap and reliable. I like it so far! Most modern car I have ever owned. First from this century!

    The little knob that was a unknown is the one that varies the instrument light intensity for driving at night. I only just found that out after 5 years of having the car.

      Yep, you're absolutely correct. I found another version of the manual online as a PDF that shows it. Not sure why mine doesn't but the manual is written for several variations of car it seems.

      I wonder if the ABS error was because I had activated it testing out the car? The cars own diagnostic screen shows nothing. And no instrument panel lamps are on so I think it's fine. I have to go out later so will test the cruise control.

    I'm in agreement with your choice of a manual trans. My 97 F150 has a manual, and I don't find it to be an inconvenience... I enjoy driving it. Of course, we never had a fancy automatic car when I was a kid, so I grew up with stick shifts. New cars are just full of nonsense that costs money and never gets used. So, every 6 months you have to get your car inspected? Good lord! I thought you lived in a free country. At least it's got beautiful scenery. Cheers

      The inspection system is dafter than you think. It's not based on the year of the car itself but the year it is first registered. And registered anywhere, not just in NZ. Any car registered before 2000 needs WOF inspections every 6 months. Any new car just registered only needs inspections after 3 years. Any car over 3 years old but registered first after 2000 it's a yearly WOF. So my MGB is every 6 months, this Ford every year and my Riley, once on the road, won't need inspection for 3 years then yearly afterwards.

      @@shedbythetracks The vintage car club, and others, have been trying to get yearly WOF for classic and vintage cars that have low mileage for years. They have lots of meetings, like saying they have met with ministers and so on, but no progress ever happens. Seems any time they 'make progress' someone changes jobs and they have to start the whole 'discussion' process over again.

      @@shedbythetracks And of course the people who run the inspections want it changed so all cars over a certain age need 6 month inspections. For 'safety' but of course it won't hurt their profits! The sensible way would be mileage and time between inspections but of course they only measure mileage at the inspection!

    you should save on gas what is a litre of gas in NZ now $ 3.00 ?

    • @asciimation
      @asciimation  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      91 Octane is about $2.80, 95 is about $3.00. 98, which is harder to find, is about $3.10. Diesel is around $2. The manual says use 95 in this new car but 91 will work apparently. According to my spreadsheet for the Landy it does 17L per 100km. This new car should be more like 6! It is modern enough to have that info built in. The little display tells you current consumption as well as average and calculated range. After filling the tank that told me I could drive 600km so in theory I could get to Auckland from Wellington on one tank.
