    Asian actors, Black actors, Latino actors - They are just as equally talented as white actors. The industry does not care about that though, they just want big-name white actors to sell their movies.
    The only beef here is that minority actors are not given a fair shot or even considered when in comes to casting decisions. That's what needs to change. Hollywood says the public will not see a movie with a non white actor lead, and as a consumer, I feel that's a bunch of crap. Give us a good movie and I promise you the masses will see it, regardless.

I have my opinion, you have yours and I'm sure nothing we say to each other is gonna change that. I'm just stating a fact, that when it comes to Western main stream media, there's a disproportionate amount of minority actors to white. That's a fact. Katniss lives in District 12, also known as the Appalachia region of West Virginia. If we assume that the ethnic demographics of the futuristic Appalachia reflect District 12 demographics, maybe we can guess at Katniss' racial background.
      According to the Census Board, White persons make up 93.9% of West Virginia (compared to the national 72..4%). So, the odds are pretty overwhelming that Katniss is a white person (of indeterminable origin). Still, she could be in the remaining 4.1%! (Note that people of African descent constitute 3% of that 4.1%.)[3]
      If we make the very shaky assumption that District 12's racial demographics mirror modern demographics, the odds weigh heavily on Katniss being of Caucasian origin. Of course, Caucasians can come from North Africa, Middle East and some parts of Asia as well as Europe.

      I feel like, and I try to not bring emotions into this but they're kind of relevant, that people are getting upset with the fact that the 'reporting' leaves quite a bit to be desired.
      They're making the issue about race, thus, some feel that it implies racism towards whites because it actually is racist to tell a specific race 'hey, you can't do that because you're [specific race]'. That leads to the fighting in the comments etc etc.
      The real issue, in my opinion, is that not everything is being considered. By this I mean that Vox is postulating that race alone is the reason why an actor can not be cast as another race not their own, rather than something reasonable such as they have better skills or chemistry for the project they are working on. While they do have a point in the fact that there is some misrepresentation that is not what should be the main point, the idea that skills>race should be the main point.
      Sorry for rambling, it's a very complex subject and it takes a lot of thought to fully wrap one's head around it.
      tl;dr: Misrepresentation should be the main focus, not the race of the individual vs the race of another, i.e. making it about race usually leads to racism in itself.

Most directors are white and for some of them, it might be easier to write a white character (I actually do this when I roleplay in MMOs) because they're familiar. I think that there's a broad range of Asian talent and that it's actual yellowface when they aren't cast for Asian parts, but if the director's vision is somehow changed by the character being Asian then I think it is right to change the nationality of the character.

After all the movie did blackface, yellowface and 'whiteface' and a male actor portraying a female character. the whole main cast had multiple roles. The whole point of the story was the continuum between all the characters. But it's not as bad as in the US... Canadian shows have more Asian characters in shows and movies. I agree leads aren't really given to Asians. But look at shows like Kim's Convenience, and Second Jen. I remember seeing Asian characters in Katts and Dog, and Danger Bay where they didn't play stereotypical characters.... They played marine biologist and a cop. These were old shows decades ago. In film, Double Happiness with Sandra Oh which basically launched her career into a Gray's Anatomy, Arli$$, etc. So I think Canada showed more Asian representation earlier than America who weren't portrayed as waiters, restaurant and laundromat owners, gang members or martial artists. The only American show that had a positive Asian actor was George Takei's character in Star Trek. Huge Chinese and Asian in news ie. Andrew Chang (CBC), Mutsumi Takehashi (CTV Montréal - she's been there for decades!), and I'm sure there's more whether it be on national or regional newscasts. Personally, I think Canada is more progressive than the US in many respects. Remember, we pride ourselves on multiculturalism. Even South Asians like Ian Hanomansing, Camille Ross, etc are main anchors and hosts.

    Call me a special snowflake or a triggered liberal but this is true: Representation Matters. When I was little I rarely saw any asian characters in books or movies. (except for mulan) I started wishing In was white from the age of FOUR. i remember dressing up as a cinderella and wearing a yellow scarf on my head for “blonde” hair and wishing i could just disappear into that character. not because theatrical reasons (i have not acting talent whatsoever) but because i just wished I wasn’t chinese. i felt different, less valued, and less beautiful from everyone else. by the way, I am not exaggerating at all. as a child I always had a big imagination and in my daydreams i was always white. i never thought of it as a problem until many years later looking back. I hated being chinese almost up until middle school. yeah, the push of asian american representation seems so microscopic in the midst of things but this could make many little asian american kids happier and prouder of their beautiful ethnic background. at least it would’ve helped mini me. sorry for this little rant with horrible capitalization i just needed to get it off my chest:)

    Did you all not watch Cloud Atlas or did you just not understand it? The same souls are being reincarnated in different genders and different races, any of the Korean parts who were not reincarnations of characters seen earlier would have gone to Koreans. Halle Berry, for example, was incarnated as a white person at one point.
    If anything that film played with and questioned the way Hollywood casts people. All that went right over your heads!
    I think the message that souls don't have a race was wonderful, and you had to spit on that! There was also the suggestion that souls did possibly have a gender, and with a transgender writer and director you can see how the theme would resonate and be taken seriously.

    it's actually honestly such a big issue, and so many people are not taking it as so. And it hurts; it's sad, and insulting to Not be considered as an equal to white and black races - to be unknowingly unfairly treated, and blamed when even such an idea of asian racism is suggested. Asian racism is honestly such a real thing - for the Indians, to the Chinese, to the Philippians, and to every other asian race there is. It may not be the things like lower wages or unfair law (actually, it could be as well), but it's certainly dehumanizing and hurtful to hear others using asian jokes without thinking twice about it. It is dehumanizing to hear whatever the next untrue stereotype is, and actually seeing people believe it. and what is worse is that a lot of people see it as a normal thing, asian racism; little people would think asian racism is a big deal. And what is such a big thing as well is that Asian slavery is not so much as even mentioned in most textbooks, and most people - including asian descendants themselves - do not even know about the slavery. The poverty in china the past few years is rarely talked about as well. I am certainly not lessening the concern of other racisms or problems of other races - every racism, and poverty, and prejudice and inequality are all just as terrible, and important and big of an issue. JUST to be clear, I am not complaining. I truly believe and want to see a world without inequality and prejudice in all its form, for all the races and genders, and sexualities. please just consider this.

    This is so angering. Hollywood was built to essentially be white people congratulating other white people on their talents to be watched by other white people. They were even going to try and whitewash a live-action version of Mulan but everyone was pissed. Me included. The whole movie is based on Chinese culture and a sense of duty and honour prevalent in Asian households so whitewashing that would be distracting, confusing and extremely distasteful in the kindest words. I didn’t even bother watching the movie with Emma Stone cause I realised this was the biggest bull, as if they don’t have any other roles to take?? Seriously?? Take someone else’s idea and don’t even stay true to the character and their identity!

      I highly doubt Hollywood is built around racist white people. You making all of these accusations are a little hypocritical, don't you think? You're saying Hollywood is white people congratulating white people and being watched by white people. Pretty racist to me if I'm going to be honest. If you haven't noticed, there is a lot more diversity in actors nowadays in terms of gender, sexual orientation and race than there was in previous decades. We're making progress, but I don't think you understand how talent works. There are talented people of colour in the film industry and a lot of them are absolutely fantastic to watch, but they're talented. We can't have this equal diversity of people in a certain industry if there isn't an equal distribution of talent, you feel me? It's progressing, but currently it's just not the case lmao. About the whitewashing, I don't overly mind or find it too offensive unless it's too overboard like Ashton Kutcher was. It's not the fault of film companies to want to make money from their films and the best way they'll do that is to put a common famous celebrity in their film. They could hire an appropriate cast for each role according to their race in the film, but why does it matter so much? I mean it's obviously not to make fun of that race or discriminate against the race otherwise they wouldn't be making a serious film with a character of colour. It doesn't make sense to me why that might be offensive at all.

      ***** ...the hell? Perhaps I should explain it again.
      The whole point of the movie is that the same heroic qualities and ideals can appear in very different people from very different generations and cultures. That's why the same few actors play all these characters: despite appearing to be a different race on the outside they're all really the same on the inside. White actors play Asian characters, Asian actors play white characters, similar situation for black actors, and a man even plays a woman at one point.
      It's not racist. It's probably about the farthest you could possibly be from being racist, it's almost a deconstruction of the very concept of race.

    The irony of people who attack pieces like this for being "SJW" or "PC" is that they are clearly threatened by the opinion presented, yet criticize those making the argument as "oversensitive." Yet cast one or even "gasp" TWO Star Wars movies in a row with female and minority leads and those people immediately start complaining in the comment sections that it's the result of liberal SJW control of the film industry.

    • @NotJamesWhelan
      @NotJamesWhelan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Neal X I don't think it's as cut and dry as that. I think ordinary people who don't think about this stuff all day long have a hard time distinguishing between a good, relevant piece like this and hack opinion pieces. For example, the other day Vox posted a criticism of Kimmy Schmidt for Titus's yellow face play. It was a grossly unfair hot take that deliberately ignored the context of what Kimmy Schmidt is as a show and the style of commentary it does. There is a legitimate feeling that some elements of the media are using throaty opinion pieces to silence reasonable disagreements. Disagreements that aren't racist but maybe do want some objectivity in editorials. Often the motivations of new media companies like Vox, Buzzfeed, Mic, etc. aren't based in actually solving racial inequality, they're focused on stoking certain uncomfortable cultural differences to drive clicks.
      So my point is that there will of course be outrageously bigoted responses to a piece like this but they're not always based in pure racial hatred like it appears at first. And the more moderate disagreeable responses certainly aren't. Often it is just ordinary people who incorrectly judge this to be just another example of that editorial overreach. The culture of some of these companies (liberal and conservative) are often so uniform that a reasonable amount of debate doesn't happen at an editorial level. Often there is one opinion that is never challenged, and because these new media companies are overtaking old media like the NY Times, Washington Post, etc. as our main sources of news, a lot of normally moderate people get quite angry about the lack of balance and have reasonable fears about our right to disagree without being attacked. Balance doesn't necessarily mean letting Rush Limbaugh write a guest post, but it might mean keeping someone on staff who at least values the moderate opinion.
      I really think we as a culture have to stop labelling our opponents as outrightly bad just because they disagree with us. Their motivations aren't always what they first appear.

      @jasonomnia9295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen it more than once in the past, and the title illustrated itself that it was last about the Last Samurais, that alone could have been a good reason for Hollywood depict the war between Samurais and their emperor till the end. But did they? no, and why would they? Hollywood has their own track record of poorly portraying Asians in their movies, and given Asian roles to white actors especially when it's based on real life stories. And the clash of cultures you speak of was Hollywood excuse of adding in someone white. I like Tom Cruise, but they could have given him the supportive role.

    • @spacedonkey3412
      @spacedonkey3412 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Jason React it's about alot more than just a war between samurai, it's how there was a clash of cultures and how Japan was becoming more westernised and the repercussions of that, one side of that being the fall of the samurai feudal system. While the film isnt historically accurate it is however based loosely on true events and people. I can't remember exactly but I do know Tom cruise's character is based on a French captain who actually fought alongside the samurai in the Meiji rebellion. The thing is at the end of the day this film is made for a western audience as entertainment. People want to be able to relate to the main characters so out of all the characters in this film to portray the main protagonist why not the westerner. If anything to be more historically accurate tom cruises role should have been that of a French captain, not an American one and the role played by a French actor you could say but then again who would an American in general want to be their avatar into this world of fantasy. When it comes to the last samurai people clutch at straws to say it's white washing. If you want to see hollywood white washing look up the 'asian' land lord in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

      +Kai Keeper " they also made Asian actors look like western people in that movie"
      That's ok. It's only when someone white does something that it's offensive and wacist.

    Representation does matter. I remember when I was little, I was surrounded with all these movies with no asian representation at all. I started wishing to be someone else, a different race. Now that I’m older, I’ve started to love myself because of kpop ngl. It made me love myself for myself.

      That seems like a problem with you, not with movies.
      There is a problem if anyone is getting their self-worth from movies.

    What's ridiculous is that we have the human resources in the US to cast appropriately. There are at least 20 million Asian Americans for goodness' sake!

    This is a great video, with an important point. One small thing however - Tilda Swinton is not playing a Tibetan character. The production company couldn't sell the movie in China with a Tibetan character, so they changed the character to be Celtic. Tilda Swinton got cast to play a Celtic character. The film was hence sold in China.

      An Asian actor played Wong. They could have done the same for The Ancient One.

      @@w2385-i2s - you can’t have any characters that would seem as pro Tibet. Hence making a Tibetan character now white. The Chinese government would ban the whole film and probably subsequent films and even alot of Disney projects in their market. So oddly enough movie studios make choices that impact source material in order to be able to make a profit overseas. Take a look at Taskmaster in black widow,
      They had to change the costume because anything resembling a skull couldn’t be allowed in Chinese movie screens.

      @@spidermancares why white? there are other Asian characters living with the Ancient One in Tibet. Did China complain about the Asian characters? It's Hollywood White washing. Hollywood could have use the other Asian actors in the movie as the Ancient One.

    I'd say Linda Hunt's Oscar-winning case balances out because she played a guy and no one noticed.
