    thank you for covering this case. I am Indonesian and I used to work in Jalan Setiabudi around the building where the case happened. even until now, people in the area are still talking about this case. I read Dr. Mun'im Idris's book ; Indonesia's X-files volume 1 where he specifically wrote Setiabudi Case as one of the most highlighted cases in his career and he also regrets that he couldnt resolve the case. he also wrote that the person who did the crime, somewhat had some medical knowledge or at least knowledge on human body as he or she made such a clean and precise cut on the body.

      Hi, I am an Indonesian too. Few years ago I often visited the RSCM for work and the people areound there told me that those bones were likely the bones of the criminals and gangsters/thugs (preman) that escaped the punishment from the law. So the government (aka Soeharto regiment) actually created a special force to annihilate those thugs secretly. This also happens to those people who were opposing the governments. I am not sure whether this is true or not but they say that during the 80s, they often see dead bodies suddenly discovered in the early mornings around those areas and usually those bodies belong to thugs or people with political interests.

      @@Frooooooo i think what you meant is the Petrus killing, i dont think this one is related to it. From dr. Mun'im's books, it is said that the victim of setiabudi 13 has no tattoo which was one of the main characters of the petrus killings (all petrus victims have tattoes). While petrus killing victims were indeed thrown away in sacks on the roadside, they were intact (no mutilation) and has gunshot wound in their heads as warning to other thugs and outlaws to behave or beware. In his book, Indonesia's X-file, Dr. Mun'im clearly stated that setiabudi 13 wasnt one of the petrus victims.

    I feel like “medical knowledge” is an extremely dangerous thing to assume in a case like this, because it can lead to tunnel vision extremely quickly. Mostly because when I heard the description of this man’s remains, I didn’t think surgeon - I thought butcher. And a professional butcher would definitely have the ability to single-handedly dismantle a body in a couple hours without damaging the internal organs or leaving anything on the bones, AND hide the evidence of it. This sort of thing could even explain how the boxes were left so discreetly (if, say, from some sort of delivery vehicle) and possibly why no one seemed to know the victim (if he was poor/lower class or only recently moved to the area) and why no similar crime was ever reported (if this was a crime of passion of some kind, followed by not a mutilation, but a disposal).
    I wonder if some sort of line of thinking like that got overlooked by the original investigators, and that was a part of the reason this poor man never got justice, or even his name back.

    If the forensic doctors suspected that the crime was carried out by someone who was skilled in carrying out such medical procedures , police should have also looked into people in this area of expertise.Also all the evidence led to the area where the remains were found then the police should have also looked into it's residences.

    there's actually some details and theories missing on this case and very hard to find on the news.
    1. The police never revealed the suspected ethnicity of the victim. Back then, there was actually a theory that the victim wasnt Indonesian at all. But a vietnamese refugee, that's why it was really hard to find the identity of the victim
    2. 1981-1982 was Indonesia's political year. at the time, some people raise the issue of PKI's (Indonesian Communist Party) resurgence and its affiliation with current president Soeharto. The case was theorized to spark this issue. However, it was deemed a failure. Soeharto was too powerful and very capable to shutdown the issue
    3. the perpetrator was theorized to have been found and caught but wasnt given any civil trial at all, but directly executed.
    I got those theories above from my late apartment manager. He was lived in Setiabudi area for over 60 years. And during the case, he was a security guard in one of the building near the Garuda Mataram building.

    • @tiramisu7544
      @tiramisu7544 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Theory 3: he was indonesian but from another city. Given how big the country is and how big jakarta itself is, it’s no surprise that this theory should be considered

    • @hoisdisguy7400
      @hoisdisguy7400 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Theory 5: it's still in the 80s, so the police are just incompetent especially in Indonesia

    • @NurmaBP
      @NurmaBP ปีที่แล้ว +67

      @@hoisdisguy7400 In the 80's, police and military forces are not seperated just like today, but united as ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia, or Armed Forces of Indonesian Republic) and under Soeharto's regime it basically at it's peak and very powerful.
      FYI, at the time, some of South East Asian countries (golden triangle area), which is the area sorrounding Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, basically become the centre of drug production and trafficking. There's theory that it's related to CIA psyops in SEA (after Vietnam war), you know, just like CIA planted General Noriega in Panama, and many South American countries (you can google the book about it, the tittle is 'Our Man in Panama). Which is also happened in Afghanistan (Afghanistan poppy fields) for the last 20 years after Iraq war. Same modus operandi.
      So, this why a lot of people having theory that this case probably part of Soeharto's special force operation, a.k.a PETRUS (short of 'Penembak Misterius' or Mysterious Shooter) who's targeting the drug dealers, thugs, gangsters. The drug cartels is highly suspected sponsored by you-know-who, to sabotage Indonesia and other South East Asian countries national stability. Actually, this is also one of the main reason that later on many countries of SEA approved death penalty law to against drug dealers or anyone related to drug cartels. You can watch Lee Kuan Yew (former Singapore Prime Minister) interview with BBC, and his explanation of death penalty for drug trafficker in Singapore.
      But in Indonesia in the 80's, it's the era of infamous PETRUS (mysterious shooter), Soeharto's allegedly assasins. And this case, and how the victim's body was placed in the centre of the city, probably like somekind of statement, from The Smiling General (Soeharto) to the drug traffickers to gtfo? Or middle finger to CIA?
      Who knows.

      In 1981 Indonesia, reporting a missing person to the police wasn't a common thing to do. On top of that, the sketch of that victim's face couldn't get enough exposure. A TV set was a luxury for most Indonesians. On some occasions, the entire town would gather in the town hall to watch a football match because that's the only place one could find a TV set. Newspapers are quite the same. The biggest newspaper at that time only send out around 1 million-ish to circulation everyday, while the total national population was over 100 million people, spread on thousands of separate islands. The logistics challenges alone would make a newspaper so expensive and so late in smaller populated islands.

    Can you please talk about the Chinese Corpse Dungeon (Serial Killer Jia Wenge) case. There is almost no info about this horrific case and all articles are only in Chinese. Maybe you have the source to cover this case with your team. That would be awesome

    You have the voice, cadence, and enunciation that news anchors and documentary narrators would die for. It's very soothing. I appreciate the way you tell these victims stories. Thank you for covering cases many in the Americas and 'western' countries don't hear about. These victims deserve to have their stories told and to help drive awareness and change.

    The Setiabudi 13 case was not the first mutilation case in Indonesia, but it was the first such case widely known for its brutality, and also the eye opener to the public that such crimes existed.

    Your channel has to be my favourite true crime channel. It's always been an interest of mine to travel across Asia, particularly South Korea, but it's also important to know about such things as nowhere in this world is 100% safe. Cold cases must be so haunting to those who worked on them and the families who have lost a loved one with their cases unsolved. I hope the souls of cold cases have been able to move on from this world and not be stuck in misery, never seeing justice for their death.

    challenge the police? it could also be that they killed that guy, made sure the face was intact for identification, to threaten someone else. like a rival group or syndicate, or individual that might do something against them so they were sending a message to that person not to do something cute or else...
