  • WE FINALLY MAKE IT TO BRISTOL HARBOUR ON OUR NARROWBOAT. WE HAVE A LOVELY THREE DAYS VISITING THE CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE, THE GIANTS CAVE, THE OBSERVATORY, SS GREAT BRITAIN. WE SPENT TIME EXPLORING THE CITY AND, OF COURSE, FOUND LOTS OF PARKS FOR GEORGE TO PLAY IN.
    ON OUR WAY THROUGH SALTFORD WE HAD A DRINK IN THE JOLLY SAILOR AND THE OWNER OFFERED TO MAKE US A HYDERABADI BIRYANI ON OUR WAY BACK. WE DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO STOP SO HE PACKED IT UP FOR US AND WE HAD IT ON THE GO. IT WAS AMAZING AND WE CANT RECOMMEND THIS PUB HIGHLY ENOUGH.
    IT WAS FUN CRUISING THE RIVER AVON BUT WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK ON TO THE QUIET KENNET AND AVON CANAL SOON.
    WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE VLOG, PLEASE LIKE, COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE IF YOU DO. WE ESPECIALLY LOVE READING ALL THE COMMENTS AND TRY TO REPLY TO THEM ALL.
    THANKS FOR WATCHING

    I’m only sorry I wasn’t watching this a year and change ago so I could’ve directed you to The Apple, an all-cider-and-perry pub on a boat.
    I was in Bristol for work some years ago and my hotel was 200y down the street from there and I was in there every night.
    Old Bristolian, so yummy.

    Really enjoying your K&A vlogs, thanks. It had never really appealed to me before your vlogs as I'd heard there was nowhere to moor but you don't seem to have had a problem, maybe it's because it's late in the season! Looks lovely down there 👍

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dulcie Barnes it is beautiful but is also fairly busy. There are lots of sections full of local CC'ers and many many hire boats. We haven't been stuck for a mooring anywhere but there is a big section near the peak that is notorious for low water and at many places you need a plank to get off the boat. Over all I would totally recommend it despite the issues.

    There is just no way either of you can be serious. You make life much more interesting. I see in all the videos George like most pets has his staff well trained. Ha Ha You are discovering that most cities and towns and villages were built around the canals where in North America The Railway was for the large part the centre of each community. The entire life around the canals is much more social and down to earth that the equivalent in North America. The speed of life on the canals may be a factor as opposed to the higher speeds of the rail system. Some people do not like the food in England, our trips were mostly in and around London, Cardif, I also went over to Belgium to tour the Ypres Battle Sites where my Grandfather was 1914-19 when he finally was discharged. We enjoyed a very cosmopolitan variety of food. The service was always excellent.

    So, (LOL) I am watching this again. Something you did not tell us. At the bridge, y'all are standing in an observation area. Some sort of plaque there with information. Telling us about the company that went broke. What are all the locks clipped onto the railings? I did not see them the first time I watched this.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Greg Gobleman This seems to have become a fad in the last five years or so, people putting locks symbolizing their relationships on convenient bits of infrastructure in picturesque places. I think it started on a bridge in Venice or one in Paris, both of which I've seen so inundated that the bridge railings risk collapse and the authorities come along and cut off all the locks. I'm not sure what that does to the relationships. M

    as a yank from Ok. I caught the........... " take the knee" .... dig ............. a combat vet says thank you

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chip Wood Well, I'll be honest, that wasn't a dig. If there was a sound of irony it was because I feel like the very fact that the debate is happening is ludicrous. I do not believe that they're protesting the flag, or that they're in fact protesting or disrespecting vets... I take them at their word (as I do anyone protesting anything) and believe that their intent is only to protest the too many very public examples in the last few years of actions by some police that, at the very least, look bad to the people who are doing the protesting. Though I do appreciate that people might be offended by the way they're making their protest known, I like to think that my dad -- a Vietnam vet -- would see right past the politics and stand with anyone in America who is exercising their right to protest, were he still here, because ultimately it was those rights he joined up to defend. Not to support their protest -- that's a personal choice, I suppose, and maybe it's not possible to fully understand their perspective without walking a mile in their shoes -- but to support their right to make that protest known.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chip Wood Sorry, had to do this in two parts... to conclude, and not to spend long on politics; my dad was a vet, and I appreciate the sacrifices and convictions of military service, so as every American should I -- honestly and with feeling -- thank you for your service, as I thanked him for his, but I do see senators and representatives on both aisles on CSPAN sitting, yawning, and talking during the anthem all the time, so, no, I do not think the act is inherently disrespectful to vets, and I do wish any President would clean his own House first before throwing stones, and I would hope anyone in that office would at least hear out the protestors and try to understand their grievances first before making it a campaign issue for their own benefit. M

    • @chipwood5017
      @chipwood5017 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      like the saying goes ... I may not like what you say but I would give my life to defend your right to say it ..... thanks for the great vids

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Chip Wood Exactly. To me that's one of the core ideals of America, and it's gotten watered down in a way I really don't like, often by taking the guise of either blind, unthinking you're-not-a-true-patriot-isms (on the right) or blind, unthinking you're-not-politically-correct-enough-isms (on the left). I want people to say unpopular things, even things that repulse me... I won't like those people, and I probably won't want those people in office, but that's why I've got a vote. But if I don't afford them the freedom to say something stupid, why should I have the freedom to point out how stupid it is?
      Glad you like the videos! M

    Do you have to buy a licence for every canal and river in the UK?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +adrianuwant3 yes, you need a licence for every waterway you use. Most are covered by the CRT licence, some by the Environment Agency, the River Wey is managed by the National Trust and there are a few local authority managed ones. There may well be others too that we don't know about yet!

      So the further you travel the more it could cost you, unless you stick to the river and canals covered by the one licence you have already? How long dose the licence last for?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +adrianuwant3 That depends; the CRT license can be purchased in many different increments (1,3,6, and 12 months, for instance), but when living aboard you usually buy one year. Most waterways have short term licenses (less than one month) and long term license ... it can all be pretty confusing! M

      That dose sound to me that the Licencing, in some Rivers and Canals, could be open to exploitation by the various Trusts and organisations of various Rivers and Canals, is there anything written down stating what it will cost per River or Canal? Do you know who polices the rivers and canals?

      +adrianuwant3 Most of the canals in England are C&RT, and their policies are pretty clear and always on their website. The Environment Agency runs the Thames and most of the other significant tidal and shipping rivers, as they deal with much more traffic and commercial traffic. They're also pretty public with fees etc. Most of the rest are accounted for by National Trust areas (like the Wey) and systems run by city or borough councils (the Basingstoke and Bristol Harbor). For the most part everyone has everything posted online and much of it hasn't changed significantly in years, so not too much of a problem in practice. Of course we've only experience the few we've been on so far, up north I believe there's a couple of privately owned canals, whereas everything we've been on has been a government or governmental agency, which tends to reduce shenanigans. How much was the Bristol licence?

      +Mike Tipping about £50 for 48 hours. Pretty pricy but cheaper than a hotel!

      Minimal List ... did the licence cost cover the mooring fees and were you assigned a particular mooring or was it simply a ‘go look over there’ arrangement?

      A Frayed Knut it included licence and mooring and we were given a choice of three mooring sites!

      It's only when you have to pay for the bits that aren't covered by a CRT licence that you realise what good value it is. I am surprised you're heading back up the K&A rather than paying the £200 for a Seven pilot so you can pay £50 to go up the Warwickshire Avon.
