    Good to see your getting better, George looks like one happy dog, ball throwing, water to swim in and his humans to play with. Agree with you that beer reviews won't work with you , but the first was so funny. Take it easy xx

    My first tour at RAF Lakenheath (1977 - 1980) was dreary and I told everyone in the US the sun never shines here. When I returned to RAF Upper Heyford (1987 - 1990), the sun was out more than rain - go figure!

    Are you sure you do not have a camera/microphone on George, as we hear him all through your blog. and you are really discovering why people like living on Narrowboats, on the Canals. Life only moves as fast as you really want, which means less than 2 miles an hour or 2 miles in two weeks, it really does not matter, does it. you guys are a hoot1

      +chevyimp We're itching to get it done! Now if only the weather and a mooring where we can actually do the work would coincide! M

    A good idea to get the ball throwing stick. Easier on your arm and goes much farther so George gets to run farther. I loved seeing him come out of the canal then shake himself off. He may be panting but he is having a good time.
    To parody a beer ad "I do not drink soda often, but when I do I prefer my soda to be fermented."
    Get well soon. I can appreciate the frustration of good weather but not being healthy enough to install the solar panels.
    Dave.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LV_Woodturner It is very frustrating! They're just waiting there, taking up the front half of the boat, and I can barely move my whole left side. Grr.
      As for the Dos Equis dude ... when I met him, he asked for my autograph.
      M

    Beer is an acquired taste, like gin and tonic, olives and narrowboats. You have to persevere and then you suddenly find that you actually want the taste. Don't give up, you are going to have the opportunity to try lots of really great local ales on your travels.

    Hello from New Zealand, thanks for your very entertaining vlogs, we love them all. We spent two weeks on the canals a few years ago, and absolutely loved it. I was very tempted to sell up and move to the UK to buy a boat. We are coming back in August but will only be gongoozlers unfortunately.
    Anyway, binge watching to catch up, thanks again.

    I have to say I am interested in hearing how the batteries work out. I don't live on a boat, but my home is off grid, powered primarily with solar (except when the horrible winter overcast of south west Ohio intervenes). I am using about 1400 pounds of lead acid batteries, 1100 amp hours sized to be able to run the house for a 2 or 3 days with no sun, before I have to run the generator. Hoping when I replace the batteries I will be able to go to something with less weight and less maintenance concerns. Agree, George view with some sort of stabilized camera would be fun.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Knowlton The lithiums are performing very well, though this winter will determine if we should have gone with 300Ah instead of 200. Also the battery monitor needs to be set up right for them, as it "thinks" in terms of Lead Acid's characteristics. Definitely feel like LiFePO4 is the way to go, but still need more time and experience to bear that out. M

    When I heard that you are a teetotaler, I wondered,"why the desire to go to Belgium?" Then you mentioned the Trappistes beer and it made sense. You only occasionally have sensational, high-quality beers! Good man.

    Good to see that Michael is in better shape now, but because you've not moved yet, there hasn't been any chance for Jo to learn how to handle the boat on her own, which is important. George seems to be very happy, and doesn't let you get out of his eye sight, you're a good team together. Don't worry about not liking beer, and that you've had only about 17 in your entire life (so far), if all is well, I'll be 70 next year and never even had my first beer, and that while I've been in the military (Nato) during the cold war, where you had to drink to belong to the "real man", and while tax-free hard liquor was cheaper than freshly pressed orange juice, I still prefered to pay the price and stay sober. Just seeing the stupid behaviour of the "real man" was enough to know that I'd made the right decision. I'm living in France since the last 38 years and never even tasted the French Burgundy wine of the area where I've been living most of these years.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Mastenbroek To tell you the truth I wish I'd made it past 70 before trying my first beer. A mashed up bitter weed and some barley in tepid water allowed to go off ... never made a lick of sense to me once they explained it! Now food, food I can get into! But not fruit juice that's gone all moldy! :-) M

    Love your beer review. I buy about once a year 6 cans of Guinness which is an Irish dark Stout. Very Typical Bitter Dark Stout. It will take me an entire year to drink the 6 cans. Sometimes I end up using it as a base in a Pot Roast, which I put in the oven for 8 hours. So tender it just falls apart delicious. My thing is apple juice or an espresso based coffee. I agree with Michael on his beer review, there thumbs up Michael.

    Your review of the English beer was very much the same as mine when I first arrived in the USA. Why do they drink ice cold urine. Then I found 151 on the rocks. . Anyway time goes on and taste changes. Some say that I too am t total. not so I still have the odd one now and then. Any way loved watching George in the back ground, he is so hyper. Tell him to watch out or he'll wag that tail right off. On other videos he still has a touch of sep I've had Odie over11 years and he still has a touch every now and then just love and reassure and it gets less and less. Stay safe

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heh... we sort of stopped doing these because of the pain it gave me - it takes a LOT to give me any effect, so basically I’m just stuck drinking something that smells and tastes like horse urine filtered through moldy bread - but we might have to try it again as the weather heats up! M

    Oh Michael! Now...I love cider AS WELL as beer, and I'm sure if you had attended the Peterborough Beer Festival this last week where there were 400 beers on offer, I'm sure I'd have found you some beers you would have liked :) I think you would have have liked Felix and the Fruit Machine and Parsons did a very nice Plum Porter. However, calling yourself a manly man when you need some articial aid to through a ball for a dog...geeze...anyone would think you were American! (I know you're not, but maybe being brought up that close has rubbed off! :) )

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ronnie Lloyd The artificial aid is due to having taken a canal to the head last week and walked away from it! And I might have liked one of the 400, but 399 wouldn't have made the last one worth it! I have -- well I wouldn't say liked, but not hated -- one beer in my life, some Belgian Trappist thing that tastes of cherries and chocolate and they only make like 500 bottles a year while under a vow of silence. The problem is I can't afford my taste buds! M

      Ahhhh....yes, I suppose that dive onto the towpath not only hurt the head but probably bruised a few ribs too! I hope you're recovering well from that now. There were quite a few fruity beers, and there were even some Belgian bottled beers there too, but you're right, they tend to be pricey!

    Then get an exercise ball an just bounce lightly a few inches 1/2 hr a day. Retrains nerves for posture and makes more resistant to injury in spine. I can send u an easy packet to follow if u want.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doc Alaska I'm in a physio program that leads to exactly that. Right now it's hydrotherapy in a pool, cause the ball or pretty much any sitting/bending exercise under gravity just aggravates it. The problem is, if it's the congenital thing, it will ultimately need surgical stabilization. M

    • @docalaska4069
      @docalaska4069 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well good luck with it and do exactly what they say. If they assign you things to do at home make sure u do them. Sounds like you are very acute and critical stage.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doc Alaska It's acutely painful right now, but it's a very long term chronic issue, started when I was 14. When it goes it tends to go for years, but when it comes back it's pretty bad. With the rest of my family it gets worse with age until they eventually get the MRI followed by doctors suddenly changing course and recommending surgery, so we'll see if I goes that far with me. M

    Try a nice fish bladder Guiness, or stick with with the Trappist Ales.

      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Caron So... does Guinness taste like it's been through a fish's bladder?? M

    • @frozenoem1
      @frozenoem1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thankfully never tasted like Fish bladders=(brewers call it isinglass) which they used to use to filter yeast or solids from their ales. Generally the darker the brew in ales/stout the less pissy the taste. Reason most enjoy Chimay or any good Trappist ales.

    • @MinimalList

    I actually liked the beer review, I only wish you had done a little more on the food, and Pub. Also as an American I would like to know how using the National Health works for non British Citizens, I assume that you have to pay but how does that work? This may be worth a video of its own. Thanks for the videos and FYI I was going to recommend those ball tossers when you did the video mentioning George and his slobber covered tennis balls, you can toss snowballs with those as well, that might be fun.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ted Gallucci The pub was nice, the food too expensive to sample more than the chips (wedge-cut fries to my fellow Americans), especially as we'd had a nice lunch not too long before.
      Interesting idea on the NHS system video ... basically I'm on an immigrant visa track, so I had to pre-pay for my NHS coverage when we came for the 2.5 year duration of the visa ... the actual process is quite complicated, but it was £750 I think for 2.5 years of coverage. I was paying roughly half that per month just for minimal insurance with a ludicrously high deductible in the States. Having experienced healthcare now in several countries with single-payer systems, it is a VASTLY superior system, like on every single level of interaction. Cannot emphasize that point enough, the entire experience of healthcare in the US is just so much worse, from bedside manner to cost. Not to say there aren't issues with the NHS, but if you actually experience both as a patient it's like night and day.
      Cheers.
      M

    But i still say consult a sports medicine chiropractor. They are even better than just MD and Physiotherapists for this type of injury. I am very serious on this point. They can be the difference between having problems the rest of your life with this and getting this resolved. The sooner you see one the the more likely you are to get a complete resolution. The longer you wait the LESS likely that is. Contact me if I can help with any questions. This is critical time and you have to be proactive for your health.
    Other than that I love your videos and hope you keep them up. ;-)

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doc Alaska Appreciate it, but I've seen lots of specialists and all sorts of people over the years. This isn't an injury so much as an ongoing issue since puberty, when I grew twice as fast as most everyone else. It recurs every couple of years, usually with no association to any form of injury or exercise. Like I say, most of my close male relatives have pretty much the same issue, always in the same area, but my bouncing around from country to country and health system to health system makes it hard to get it truly taken care of, as that seems to always involve an MRI and long wait for a finicky surgery, followed by never having the problem again. Between us we've tried literally everything short of voodoo, though I am a bit more prone than the others to the occasional head injury. Appreciate the concern, but I am working on it and working through the rather long and convoluted process here to have it seen to properly. Cheers. M

      if u have never seen a chiropractor then i strongly urge you to see one. I urge you as if you were my own father. If you have consulted one then I will shut up about it. I wish you good fortune in all things. :-)

      @docalaska4069 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But have you ever seen a chiropractor? If not then I urge you to see one who specializes in chiropractic sports medicine. I have met many a patient who had given up hope till they consulted one.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doc Alaska I do appreciate the concern and advice. The problem is that the chiropractic isn't particularly common in the UK, not at all like it is in the States and Canada, and it isn't one of the alternative or complementary care methods covered by the NHS (well, it is sometimes in some regions when referred by a GP, but not in the borough I'm registered in). So firstly I don't really have access to one without paying out of pocket, and the fees are not really affordable. Secondly, considering that my family's history with chiropractic care for this particular issue has been that it's been, at best, ineffective, I'm leary of going down an expensive route that will probably lead to the same conclusion. If it were a covered option like the hydrotherapy then I'd try it, but I just can't afford to go the private route here in England.
      Thanks though.
      M

    Firstly Micheal hope you are firing on all cylinders soon, forget the beer reviews, the nutshell reviews were crap so don't try to emulate them, you don't need to, your vlogs are better than theirs, just concentrate on what you have done up till now. You have a fantastically beautiful wife and George so keep going as you are and I wish you all well.

      +Kevin Smith She is a real hottie, isn't she? I keep trying to explain to the world just how fantastically lucky I am. I rather like Nutshells' videos, and find the beer reviews fascinating -- if only because I find it interesting to see people express such enjoyment of something that to me is absolutely horrible -- but I don't think we'll make it a regular feature! I can't afford to keep spending £5 on a half-pint of yuck! M

    I am with you Michael, I have never liked beer, I was given a drink of it by my father when I was about eleven, and thought that is bloody awful, it is worse than medicine! I never touched it again until I was twenty I am happy to report that at that juncture it still had not improved, but I discovered a fantastic drinking substitute, in Baileys Irish Cream, I told the guys at work and with some derision they told me that's a girls drink! I replied Yes! and I like girls too! Don't you, or are you homosexual? Regards a Fan from Aus.

      +Doc Alaska Thanks, but my particular problem doesn't appear to be very amenable to chiropractic treatment. We're still trying to sort out if it's the same defect that runs in the males in my family. It's definitely pain in the same location, and seems to have the same effect on my long nerves. They tried lots of chiropractic treatments, ultimately it always seems to require surgery. M

    Your utter contempt for beer reviews is exactly why you need to do it more often. It's boring watch people who like beer drink, it is much more entertaining to watch your look of disgust before then pouring out what look and probably smells and tastes like liquid bubblegum.
