  • The Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary has a long history of brutal inmates and less than stellar living conditions. It closed in 2009 for good.

Toilet privacy doesn't exist in prisons or other institutions. Whether you want to call it jail or prison. And you better learn to do a courtesy flush pretty quick if you have a cellmate.

It would seem that for some prisoners, places like this don't serve as deterrents, instead they serve as schools. Add the fact that you would never have a moments rest just trying to avoid someone killing you...sounds like a reason to become meaner.

That was a very nice walk through and tour. I enjoyed seeing Lamont collaborating with you. It was especially good that Lamont pointed out the controversy concerning James Earl Ray. Early after the assassination, there was serious doubt concerning Ray's guilt. A number of aspects of the crime scene did not line up with the official story. Thank you, Lamont, for pointing out what is largely ignored by so many other TH-camrs. He invests the time and effort to be as accurate as possible.

You say it looks like it is in a state of decay like it was closed much longer ago. There are several active populated prison units in Texas that look exactly like the one you toured here. State funding just does not go toward beautification. Most of it goes into someone's pockets.

Been wanting to visit that place for awhile now. I used to work for Tennessee department of corrections but worked at a different prison. This place i believe was even worse then Riverbend which houses Tennessees death row on nashville. Tennessee state penitentiary is also located there and closed on the 1990s however not open to public and impossible now to restore.

If I got 99 years in there I wouldn't have taken it out on some dude and thrown him over the side, I'd have threw myself over.

Back in the 1980s I went to tour Alcatraz on tour. A family friend was a ranger there and we got to see the casemates of the 1855 Coast Artillery fort that was initially there. Then it became an Army stockade before a Federal Penitentiary. It closed in the 1960s and was "Occupied" by the American Indian Movement.

The old Lifebuoy carved into a pistol trick! The stuff of scores of B movies. (it always went wrong, too!)

We went to Brushy Mountain, in 2020. We toured the grounds and distillery as well. At the time we were there, the owner of the distillery was putting up bottles of a "first run" of a whiskey, onto the shelves. After a sample tastin, we started chatting and he explained that the literally just finished the first run of this whiskey and first bottling. I asked if it was for sale yet or not, being that there were only a few cases at that point, and he said yes. He handed me a bottle that he just put onto the shelf, and I completed the purchase. Being that
I bought the first customer bottle sold I paid to have the bottle engraved with the day and such. This was the first time they had used the engraving, so the spacing was off center, and such. They offered to give me another bottle and to try again, but I wanted to keep the authenticity of being the first bottle sold, so I kept it. We chatted some more, and took pictures. It was a neat experience.
