Cariñosa originated from the Panay Islands in the Philippines, it was introduced during the Spanish Colonization, it is related to the Spanish Bolero and the Mexican Jarabe Tapatio. Ha-ha. I made that video from the pictures I took during the event. It was taken in MacArthur Park Los Angeles during the early eighties. And that was Jackie Lou (Pilita's daughter) who was the reina elena. Filipinos were celebrating Santacruzan and Jackie Lou was chosen to be the reina elena for the event. I remembered when my mom wrote a letter to her younger sister in Manila, she wrote the right word cumusta and trabajo but now mostly some write it kumusta and trabaho. Slowly the spanish words also vanished. In Negros Occidental in 1980’s i heared the old ones spoke some words in spanish but right now you can hear from young generation mix english

That parade she's attending isn't a Pegeant, that is a Santa Cruzan and Flores de Mayo, the festival that is celebrated every month of May, which the Philippine version of Spring Festival, where most of the flowers in the Philippines blooms in the Spring and Summer season of March to May.

There are 2 versions of the procession showcasing beautiful ladies and their escorts, one is the Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) where the procession ends up in the local church to offer flowers to Mother Mary. The other is the Santacruzan (Santa Cruz or Holy Cross) which is a much bigger procession showcasing various biblical characters. This depicts the finding of the true cross by Queen Helena (represented by the Reyna Elena) and Constantine (represented by the escort).
These processions are held during town fiestas which held in the month of May.
