Thought I'd commended on this. My old man and gradfer were avonmouth green groucers . The old man took me on one of the last pill ferries and that's why he were a great father. Thanks larry
My grandmother grew up in Pill ( she lived with her grandmother and her grandfather, who was a sea captain ) She left Somerset in her 60's to live nearer family and in her 80's and 90's , after a glass of sherry on a Sunday she would sing this song to her grandchildren.
When the nights are dark and stormy And the bitter north wind blows Cross the fields from Shirehampton Where the muddy Avon flows Where the Pillites gaily ride Over on the ferry from the other side The boat starts swingin, you'll hear them singin' Float in on the tide! Chorus: Pill, Pill, I love thee still Even though I'm leaving Pill, Pill, I love thee still When the ferry boat starts heavin When the rain down pours, the thunder roars The lightnin flashes bright I'll be better by far in The Duke or The Star Than on the Old Pill Ferry tonight
Wonderful memories of were I spent the 1st 12 years of my life. I knew Adge well - he pinched my Mum's bottom one night in The Duke of Cornwall Pib for which he got a slap! They still remained friends!!! Mum and I also saw him in his MG the day he tragically died in a car crash
I said 8 Years ago (SQUARE AFFAIRS) that this was the BEST Version of Pill Pill I've ever come across. I can still say in 2021 that it ain't been beaten yet ! I'm just putting up a One Page tribute to Adge which includes a ' Memorium ' bit on his wife Yvonne Cutler as she was interviewwd by Roger Bennett (HTV) at the AGH Terrace Bar next to Clifton S. Bridge. While trying to gather as much of AC's original Songs (prior to Pete Budd era ) , I can say that it is a hard task unlike "Pill Pill" on your site Bob ........ SO! I hope you don't mind if I include YOUR Version with all due credit. NATCH ! The site Bristol News Online with Adge's Tribute isn't complete as we speak - BUT - hopefully will be by 18/5/21 coming. I'll post a "Click-2-Link" online version soon as I'm sure you of all people will appreciate the effort ! ---- Trying to do a few more Tributes-2- Bristol-Legends, as and when time permits. Sadly, most have all gone home, and with them, so have all the Landlord's who ran such Iconic Pub's. Wishing you well Bob & Keep up the good work ! :-) Burky xx
Thx for your supportive letter ol bean.Adge's wife (Eyvonne) used to do a few numbers in my live music joint (Piano Bar Clifton) on Sun afternoons during the period when bars closed at 10.30 pm.We had licences enabling us to stay open all day and into 2am following.Eyvonne liked a few belts, and was one of our lovable characters, along with Ronnie Corbett, and Baldrick of Blackadder fame to name some notables. The old girl is long gone now,but I miss her company despite her appaling voice !
Embarked on my family researches and discovered many ancestral links to Pill.... Rice, Bellamy, Hunt, Buck, Thayer and Rostey all feature. Must come and visit sometime!
Me too! My Dad - from Oxford - loved these records in the 70s, & was gutted when Adge died. Now I've just discovered my grandfather's grandmother & 5+ generations before her came from Pill! (Not on Dad's side tho', on Mum's.) If only Dad (&Mum) were alive to tell them the news!
Having researched all the Sh** copy-cat"Tribute" (Bollox) sites, I see very little real tributes at all - Merely a way to plug their crap rip-offs ! Esp BUDD. This is still the best visual tribute using Adge's original & unique vocals ! None barely mention Yvonne, not even an obituary. Great stuff Bob.
Used to like going across the ferry to have a few pints and back to lamplighters for last pint before closing .can't remember names of the pubs over in pill .long time ago.happy days.
This is probably still the best tribute video with original lyrics by Adge Ive seen ! Can't stand that tosser Pete Budd putting on a total piss-take somerset accent & bastardising A.C.'s real music ! Wish you could dig-up some more of the original sounds & set them to video as with this one ? That would be true dedication for sure !! :-)) Burky
@@saradavies3991 Typical prat comment from a Doris ! YES - It does matter. Pete Budd was never more than a w/e singer with a few bog standard groups from Hawthornes to Tiffany's. Adge was a legend - Budd is just a piss-taker with a bullshite accent. PERIOD !

Brilliant! Found some original LPs in my dads effects when he passed...there is and never will be another Adge Cutler. Sadly missed...

What was her second name?
Best band around Adge and the Wurzels brilliant
Born and bred In Somerset I moved away in twenty's ,, but boy do I LOVE going back
This song is not probably not as well known as other wurzels hits but it's just as good in my opinion.
When the nights are dark and stormy
And the bitter north wind blows
Cross the fields from Shirehampton
Where the muddy Avon flows
Where the Pillites gaily ride
Over on the ferry from the other side

Happy days in Pill Bob Chamberlain a legend.

How I love Somerset and Bristol
The voice of a vanished England. Love it.

Couldn't agree with you more. Pete Budd was born in Keynsham, Somerset but other than that . . . .
Pete Budd was actually born in Brislington and the drummer is from the Forest of Dean, does it really matter, they are still Legends!!!!!
Budd sounds like my nan, born and bred south Bristol, it ain’t a fake Somerset accent, it’s a Bristolian one
