Good on Kawasaki for working on the technology. It's first gen so I would not be too critical. The next generations should be better and hopefully lighter.
I think the biggest jump in electric vehicles will come from the solid state battery technology. Gonna be a very sad day tho.
sure hope so! I absolutely love the option to ride in silence if needed!
This feels too immature even for a 1st gen. Maybe they should have had developed further its implementation before hitting the market and expecting users to debug it.
For city dwellers like me, this could easily be two bikes in one. All-electric mode for the daily commute, hybrid sport mode for the weekend rides. Hopefully future hybrid bikes will look a little better-proportioned and regain left-foot shift levers so we can at least pretend it's a normal motorcycle transmission with a quickshifter.
only concern is about the weight imo
@VanBlamm I fully agree!!
It's 226kg for a 450ccm dude
@@Jaszczur-sp2txa bike like this is more than its spec sheet. Hybrid bikes have tons of potential and I’ll probably own one in the future. Just waiting for the tech to develop a little more
@@jonny530 I doubt they have any potential performance wise tbh
8:34 that cyclist must have been pretty confused at suddenly hearing the engine xD
hahaha indeed
In an age of refinement not invention (eg Panigale bike engine has only ever evolved - well over a decade now) I give Congratulations to Kawasaki. There will be doubters and people bashing this bike, but the industry is tough and I applaud any manufacturer willing to put mental benchmarks down like this bike. Kawasaki aren't trying to replace your bike or claim this to be better than anything else. Look at their new H2. They are innovators. Yeah it's crazy expensive. It's a whole new market they've opened up, rattling the cage of other manufacturers to say wake the fuck up, we can sling out zx10, H2, 125, tourers and strong hybrids and soon , hydrogen.
Very well said!
More heavy, more expensive, more expensive to service, more to go wrong, .. No thanks, will stick with traditional for as long as possible.
I mean, it's expensive, yes. But it looks like quite some fun!
It is actually pretty cheap relatively. Most bikes cost more.
it is indeed, both things!
@@nepp9574 13000€ for a 50ish hp sport motorcycle with 0-100 in 5 seconds and bellow 200 top speed is quite pricey!
Bravery from Kawasaki, relentless effort towards motorcycle community, well done! Yet another great review from this amazing TH-camr, thanks! It semms like 2 points needs to be perfected: 1- Price: Perhaps, they needed to release manual gearbox which reduces price and reduces overall costs.
2-Shifter is needed, we are so used to kick that shift lever hahaha.
Lets see what gen 2 is going to be like or this attemp will stop just like Bmw C1 (concept 1992 production 2000, discon 2002)
Cheers!
There's been mention of a Versys-like hybrid being developed. Definitely interested to see how it will handle touring, especially if you can run it in eco and get a greatly extended range (300-400+ miles). To me, something like that makes sense for a hybrid.
that would be great indeed!
this is the only form of electrification that I accept on motorcycles, because you still have that combustion engine. If there were only fully electric motorcycles I can also go full on riding my bicycle...
hehehe
Yeah but you get like 60 more kilograms. It's not worth it
Fully electric bikes are not comparable in terms of performance. I see the most use in fully electric scooters.
@@K0nst4nt1n96 yeah same. Also because most people probably use their scooter every day vs the motorcycle that stays on 5 of 7 days in the garage. So producing a battery in this case is just waste
kawa prius, interesting bike
let's see if it becomes a popular option for Moto Taxis at some point too haha
This is a good start imo. The seamless switching from engine to electric is possible as the electrically assisted acceleration before the engine turns on from full stop is there. Maybe Kawasaki still hasn't added that part as it may not be seamless enough to give the rider some confidence on switching (could be proper gearing/shifting). And hopefully it's just a firmware update if they find a way on that part.
good point!
08:05 That gesture plus the hole in the left index finger, hilarious!
Cool riding, as always.
Thanks for sharing!
It looked really long when I saw it last year at the NEC bike show. Does it steer different to normal motorcycles?
How does it feel to switch the weight of the bike in the eletric configuration ? Do you feel it is safe for a sportsbike ?
i chuckled during the full electric mode. haha. Awesome review as always!
Thanks a lot!
Hello love your content! I subscribed! I just wish the review text on screen are smaller so that the eyes wont scroll too far from left to right and vice versa while watching the video. haha
I like the idea but if you have to come to a full stop to switch to electric only and back, that would annoy the living hell out of me. Also, I would love to see the technology in some kind of touring bike - might give you access to some mountain roads that would otherwise be closed for bikes with only an ICE.
mmhhh yea, good thinking!
Yooo that start gives off the hypercar (the endurance car) vibe
It looks like you could use a pair of new gloves, mate!
Great video as usual. Cheers from Spain!
always difficult saying goodbye to a pair that fit me so well :,)
Beschreibung lesen!
This actually looks like something useful, two bikes in one. Can do city stop and go stuff as easily as a scooter, but also longer distances. I hope these actually get more development and get cheaper in the long run.
yup, I also hope so!
Just like plug in hybrid cars, this tech on bikes also makes total sense. Instant torque + high speed pulls, cheap daily drives + long road trips. Everything is possible and the best of both worlds.
Why is the Sport Mode Manual only? My XADV is really good in Sport Mode with automatic shifting.
I wondered about the same thing
electric mode seems to be quite cool, switching between modes looks a bit annoying, should be possible on the run.
how far can you go electric and how long does it take to recharge the battery in real life?
Agreed! Unfortunately, I'd have to google that myself :D But as far as I know the battery gets charged while riding, at least that's what I've noticed on my 20 minute test run!
Battery only charges when you're running the engine, suspect only owners will be able to give any realistic impression on how it actually works.
I believe it has like 40km of range and your speed is limited on 60km/h when riding fully electric which is only intended for city riding.
@Geshmaal it has regenerative braking too.
Holy Army of the Mighty Keyboard Warrior ... LOL 😆
Sounds pretty cool!
Thanks
It's a really cool bike! It's certainly not perfect but it's exciting to think about what the future could hold with refining the technology. Just imagining a crisp inline 4 cylinder screaming in the canyons and then silently cruising around town in scooter mode, lol.
Having to come to a full stop to switch in and out of full electric mode is really a poor design. I guess it's ok if you spend a long time in a city (but then I guess the battery range must not be very big), but you'll end up not using it when you're just crossing a town if it's only a few kilometres long, while benefitting from the noise reduction would have been great in that situation. Anyway, thanks for this honest short review.
You're welcome!
Really nice to see you experiment. Really cool to see the concept has made it to a final product, even though still flawed. The biggest miss imho is not being able to switch to and from EV mode
Indeed!! Thanks mate
14k for a 450cc engine, jesus
Y'all don't complain bout r7 and other in this class tho 🤡
Well it's new so a high price is to be expected I guess, hopefully if it becomes more popular the price will go down a bit.
@szypki_zygi What do you smoking, R7 is around 10k, proper bike
Dude, you're also buying a 48v Lithium Ion battery pack and a 9kW permanent-magnet synchronous traction motor.
No, it’s not for a 450cc. You’re leaving half the drivetrain out.
Well, as my first bike I'm about to buy one of the last 2 stroke bikes that you can buy new, in Argentina at least. And that is the Suzuki AX 100. It's not a statement against this bike, but it's the most fun bike I can afford right now.
Sounds like my dad's old CB250RS..naff.. thanks for showing us, what is Kawasaki thinking..
Don't think they were and at a price of 14k which is 7k more than a z650 it's more of a gimmick bike.
It's a proof of concept more than anything. I applaud them for the effort, because like it or not, this is the way vehicles are heading. At least they are trying to implement internal combustion instead of going pure, soulless electric.
Guten Morgen 😊!

th-cam.com/video/A_lVU5NGIUY/w-d-xo.html
It looks like a very good commuter bike, or at least it could to be.
Acceptable performance on freeways, and in or around cities where the traffic becomes dense, switch to electric and avoid the heat and noise from the engine (and that awful sound, sounds like a lawnmower).
Probably will have some teething issues and the fact you cannot change modes while riding is annoying, but it does have potential.
Later they should also make a Versys style version of it.
A turbo boost button!?! Yes!
Indeed!
@Schaaf - can you add a quick 10msecomd walkaround of the bike and a start up to your videos. That would make it even more immersive for viewers. Thanks as always.
I do that at the end of the video. I hate Onboard videos which don't start with riding. But thanks for the suggestion still
@@Schaaf Cheers
Why does the 180° sound so solid?
No idea
My partner enjoys riding, but gets overwhelmed by the clutch and gear lever and rev matching etc. She learnt on a CFMOTO 300SR but would be comfortable with Ninja 650 like performance if it had a clutchless option. She is currently on a Can-Am Spyder but this may be a future option for her as she does not need super sharp handling.
Honda has 650 models with E-Clutch option now. Maybe that’s a good alternative.
@@marcelpursche5339 yip, watching all those
Not for me, at least right now, but im interested to see how it develops. Im alot more pessimistic for ev/hybrid full size motorcycles like these compared to cars and trucks.
I hope it won’t cost too much when maintaining
The electric part has no maintenance. The combustion part is just like any other 450cc 2 cylinder bike
Standard forks on this bike and it sounds like a jet ski. Let’s see if these sell
the standard forks do a fantastic job though. Recently rode the Z500 against its competitors. ABsolutely sublime suspension, standard forks too.
Gracias!
I was really curious to hear your takes on this!
Edit: Personally, I've never been the biggest advocate for alternative powertrains, but I've always believed something like this is a more viable solution while EV architecture improves and evolves globally.
The switch from electric to gas 🤤
electric motor mated before gearbox is a inefficient way of execution in my opinion cars usually integrate separately or on final drive more efficient and also less clunky
but I feel this has potential with correct execution
definitely!
Interesting bike! Maybe the future of a liter bike would be a mt09 engine with a big motor!
oooh yeeaa!
Seems Crazy Fast for a 500 cc ... it's really fast
Thanks
You left those silly trikes in the dust 😅 Pegs touching down early aren't they?
Not really, it's just that the bike's stability and geometry is very confidence inspiring to go low while keeping things safe
Kawasaki híbrido combustible y electric power!!!🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
woohoooo!
The motorbike is really powerful
What are the performance numbers on this thing? I Google them and get nothing but the mpg figures and how fast it will go on battery only. All of things most riders could care less about. I guess this is just a proof of concept. Will be a hard sell in the US.
I think it will be a hard sell everywhere. But it's great that a manufacturer is showing some balls
Hats off to Kawasaki for actually releasing this bike to the public, but tbh, it just reaffirms to me that hybrid drivetrains are a dead-end and a waste of time in motorcycles.
Probably, a fun one though
Sounds so Tron in full electric.
❤❤❤
thanks!
Next upload Duke 390 please 🙏🏻🙏🏻
If I was commuting from home every day (from the agglomeration with faster roads through our capital city with slow moving traffic) I would probably buy one of these. I think it would cut the fuel consumption in the city by a lot since the speeds rarely exceed 30kmh and the electric motor seemed to be able to handle that.
But definitely wouldn't buy one of these for fun. :D It's more like a workhorse. But I really like the idea of hybrids. Hopefully they can improve the tech and put it in bigger bikes.
14k for a 450cc😅 it's not that I'm against the tech buy if its going to be the trend to double the price for small displacement bikes it would be a No no for me.
I can see a use case in a big scooter used for commuting to the big busy city. But other than that, no. It just adds weight and complexitiy. Better add 100cc, much cheaper.
But not more silent ;)
A very decent go at hybrid tech on bikes I think. Will make for a cool option for cities that will start allowing electric-only transport within them - and still looks pretty enjoyable to ride once in sport mode. If only we can sustainably manufacture & dispose of batteries & motors...
You idiots only worry about "sustainability" when it comes to batteries, none of you were ever out there crying about the oil industry.
And motors? An electric motor is mostly a lot of copper wire and permanent magnets. "If only we can dispose of copper wire," when people are ripping it out of the walls to sell to recycling plants. You don't have a god damned clue what you're talking about.
yup! Thanks for the comment!
I want someone to make a bike with about the same power as a grom but in electric form (that isn't one of those underpowered Chinese e-grom clones)
I love riding my ebike around town, but that's limited to around 25mph
that would be cool indeed
That’s like a hybrid corolla. Its not great but it gets the job done. Imho hybrid systems has a better future than the electrics. Its good to see hybrid bikes
it's definitely more appealing but I don't know if it's the right way to go, we'll see
Interesting bike, but I wouldn't have called it Ninja.
Great video though!
The parallel hybrid approach gives more of the sound and feel of a traditional motorcycle. What’s going to fry our brains is riding series hybrids where the engine is not part of the drivetrain, but just a generator for a more powerful electric motor.
interesting thought indeed
Like the New Honda Jazz😮
Motorsound better than most of the actual bikes WTF 😂🙈
Not as bad as I thought.
Interesting but still too expensive.
And really goes like hell oO?!
for a bike with an engine this small it indeed goes quick
😀👍
thanks mate!
I don’t think a hybrid makes much sense on a Ninja sports bike. Would think a cruiser would benefit more from a hybrid system. It would be different if the battery assisted the engine in generating more power, but it only works in hybrid mode below 40 mph. The Eliminator is half the price and gets 70 mpg cruising at 60 mph. Try to get the Kawasaki Eliminator 500 and see how it does in the twisties.
fuel-consumption definitely is not a pro-argument, indeed there's combustion only which need less. But it's the complete silence in town that's a killer feature
I would like it other way around. Roughly 35kW electric traction motor + battery for +/- 100km of autonomy and small, lets say 125cc, engine as a generator / range entender only. And please in maxi scooter format...
Wirkt ganz sche laut der Auspuff.
Gönn da moi neie Handschua du Gratla :D
Would it kill Kawasaki to have an offset crank in their parallel twins? They've sounded awful for decades now.
why not a left rear brake handlebar like scooters ?
I prefer using my right foot so I'm quite glad
looked like nasty gear changes when electric only
they're also clunky in hybrid auto mode
It sound like my grandpa Vespa
New technologies are always expensive at first, that’s how’s it’s always been
Indeed
I know i dont need one but i want one....
hehehe ;)
3:53 dont think I didnt see your glove has a hole in it. The reviews not getting you enough money?? Be smart
I think at least the gear shifter should be where all traditional motorcycles have it, If I have to have it on the handlebar I much rather like to buy a scooter instead... Two wheels much cheaper
Just can't quite see the point ... I've got an SR/F and it does everything I need, but without any petrol whatsoever (or servicing for that matter). And much, much, *much* faster. I know it's quite a bit more expensive but it does cost a fair amount less to run (about £1 for 125 miles)
I can see the point quite clearly. The satisfaction of firing up a combustion engine.
Algorithmus Moin aus Hamburg. 🙏
Would be cool to put the electric motor up front for 2 wheel drive 😎
Interesting idea
All these Honda DCT’s, and this is the first bike for you to use buttons to shift gears. How was this even possible to happen?! 🤣🤣 Great video. 💪🏻
What are you talking about? Honda DCTs have had the buttons to shift gears on your left hand for as far as i can remember. They even make a shifter-style button for your left foot....?!

It seems like this is just an expensive ninja 650.
This thing is ridiculously heavy and ridiculously expensive. It's DOA. I drive a hybrid Camry but I wouldn't touch this.
expensive yes, but the weight is not such a big deal. Rides incredibly well
@@Schaafit weighs as much as my multistrada. For that weight, I’d rather take the multistrada.
I think hybrids have merits for commuter/touring bikes, but this engine is mismatched with the electric motor. It's a very jarring disconnect between EV mode and the motor springing to life. The nature of the small 4 cyl zx4rr engine, though, would be perfect. Smooth as silk in either EV or hybrid, and in sport mode can fill power and torque at low rpm where the zx4rr is lacking. Would make for a much more refined package. Sport bikes with this tech simply need to be lighter than this example though.
If it was a 40hp electric boost, then sure, it would possibly be worth a punt. Not for 10.
Missing the point - the electric motor adds torque at low speed, which is where low capacity ice motors are weakest
@@faraway5828So twist the throttle more
@@faraway5828 thanks ;)
I disagree. If it only cost a grand more than a low capacity bike without the hybrid system, then it would make sense for someone that's into hybrids / alternative bikes. At the same price as a 1000SX, makes no sense at all when it's only a 10hp boost and little other benefit.
@@eb9826 Oh, I wasn't justifying the price at all - simply postulating that the electric motor benefit was torque, not HP.
This is literally just a pirus on two wheels

Very interesting but if you wanted to save money on fuel, you could buy a 250cc bike.
