A great piece of work Mike. You just can't beat Yew, there's always something exciting hiding inside...
Thanks William, you're so right there mate :)
Take care
Mike
That was a real nail biter. You really manage to stay calm and just go with the wood. Beautiful vase and another great video.
Thank you Dan, I have to admit I was a tad nervous, that's why I didn't go any thinner on the walls .. wimp that I am ;)
Take care
Mike
Every time I watch one of your videos I find a little nugget that I wasn't expecting. This time when I saw you chuck the sanding disk into the headstock I thought "why didn't I think of that!" I've always used a handheld drill, but your method works way better once the piece is already parted off. Thanks for sharing, and greetings from the U.S.!Dan
Hi Dan, glad you found some use from the video, and thanks for watching my friend.
Take care
Mike

Just a little different in size to the last goblet. Turned out really nice, I like it when cracks are still visible, makes it look more natural. Well done!
Lol... just a tad Paul.
Thanks mate, appreciate it.

Mike
Really like the finished item Mike. The conversion of my garage to a turning shop is coming on. The Electrician came yesterday and advised a upgrade for the feed to my garage to 30 amps and a ring main installed for all the sockets I need. A third of the garage is for domestic use i.e. Tumble dryer, freezer etc. My 'trician is going to install all the final wiring/connections to my RDC garage fuse box to sign it off. I went to 'Turners Retreat' at Harworth, Doncaster and purchased 3 Robert Sorby turning chisels (plus other goodies) to add to my 4 'Crown' Starter chisels set I bought off Ebay. I saved about £150 on a new set, result!
Thank you Ian, your workshop sounds as if it is going to be top notch. great result on the tools to mate.
Take care, and thanks for watching
Mike

I’m new to wood turning, I watched all your videos before I started the “basics” was a big help, the finish you use is beautiful. Keep turning and stay safe
Thank you for your kind words John, and I really hope you enjoy your turning journey as much as I have to date :)
Take care
Mike
Hi Mike,
Outstanding piece again!!!
The crack makes the entire piece,,,,in my opinion!
Thanks for the video!
Tom
Thank you Thomas, very much appreciated.
Cheers
Mike
Nice piece Mike. Yew pots are tough. All that really slow growth makes them so.
Great hollowing system from Simon Hope though, takes away all the stress and strain. I bought one a couple of years ago and would recommend it to anyone for deep hollowing.
Thanks Jim, I agree, and yes Simon's system is a breeze to use for sure.
Take care
Mike
Beautiful vase Mike, that void adds no end of character!
Great video mate and cheers, Bram.
Hi Bram, and thank you, glad you liked it mate.

That’s turned out a great piece Mike. Never the easiest timber to work but one of the most beautiful. 👍
Thank you Steve, appreciate you watching and commenting. This is by far the hardest piece of Yew I've turned, but oh so worth the trouble :)
Take care
Mike
What a lovely job, Mike. I’m still finding very large pieces of uneven yew revolving on the lathe an excellent cure for deep seated constipation! Must gird my loins and have a go. Many thanks for another fascinating video. Cheers Graham
Thanks Graham, and a massive lol, I can't get this picture of your girded loins out of my mind!!! ;)
Take care mate
Mike

Mike
It looks great, as expected. The grain pattern is spectacular, I just love yew for that. I too was a bit worried about it exploding when the walls were getting thin. I see that you resisted that one more cut problem that I have developed. A few failures but no injuries...so far. Good job Mike and great video as well.
Thank you Gil, the one more cut resist was harder than I thought it would be :)
Cheers
Mike
Great job once again Mike. Love the design and wood. One day I may have the guts to do something like that. Cheers. John

Mike
Hey Mike Love your channel! Beautiful Piece! I see you hang plastic to keep the shavings in check. I have been considering hanging electrical conduit and hanging curtains that I can pull around my lathe when I am turning. There are very few places in my shop that shavings will not reach. I would love to send you a sticker.
A really nice piece Mike. My last piece decided to split the day after I turned the rough shape. As always great videos to watch and always see something to try.
Thanks Paul, I have this indoors now, so time will tell if, and how much it moves.
Take care
Mike
Thanks Mike, I love yew. actually I have yet to turn any yew but it sounded good
Great video and lovely vase. I really like the bold move of leaving the void as a feature, nice work! Peace! Erik Anderson

Beautiful wood and a lovely hollow form. Only just found this video as I'm thinking of getting the Simon Hope easy arm jig. Well as soon as I can afford one anyway 😉
Thanks T ... you won't regret it.
Beautiful job Mike! Those long handle hollowing tools are definitely something that I would love to get. But I suppose I just have to start at the start and do the basics first? Great shine and Yew has some gorgeous character!!! Cheers Sean
Thank you Sean, it all takes time mate.
Take care
Mike
What a gorgeous Hollow Form, Mike. I think your decision to leave that large crack/inclusion was a great decision. It adds a lot of character to the piece. An idea, which I think I learned from you and you may have forgotten, would be to wrap the outside with some stretched plastic to help hold it together if you tried hollowing it a bit thinner. Haven't tried it myself but it made sense to me when I saw someone (you?) do it in a video. Then again, maybe I just dreamed it but I still think it might work. LOL Love the result and the video was great!
Take care,
.....Gord
Hi Gord and thank you as always mate. The idea was not mine, but I have seen it done by others. I just felt that I wanted to hollow it naked ... the piece ... not me! You were dreaming my friend as I have never posted a video on the subject, but maybe someone should ... you?
I sent you a FB message but I know you rarely dabble in that, so I will say here "Thank You" for the stickers, they will be highlighted and on the wall in my next offering.
Take care my friend
Mike
Very nice. Starting a hollow form myself and like the shape of yours. I as well would leave the crack as it adds character.
Thanks for that, all the best with your hollow form too.
Take care
Mike
Beautiful piece, Mike!! Thanks for sharing!

Mike
Fantastic job sir. Well done
Thank you Mac
Cheers
Mike
You sure worked hard for that one and it came out well. I think I would have left that crack as it is too because it looks like that whole piece could come out. Good job.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thanks Brendan, I have to admit I felt a bit of a "whimp" not going thinner, but in the end I'm happy that I didn't.
Cheers
Mike

Gt timing Mike, just turned my first big lump of wood (spalted beech, I think!). Well out of balance to begin with. Lathe nearly went for a walk. Turned the speed down and got it to a round cylinder. A bit longer but not as fat as your piece. Thought I might need a spindle steady so in process of making one similar to to your/Stephen Ogle design. Then I'll be attempting to do some deep hollowing. Wanted to know how you held in chuck and how you finished after parting. You've answered both of those! I'll be trying freehand hollowing but may well find this to be beyond my capability. At least it'll give e a chance to try my new hollowing tool out on what is after all a piece of what otherwise wood be wood burning log!
Glad you overcame the problems you encountered Ray. The steady rest will be a great addition.
take care and turn safe mate.
Cheers
Mike
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You've been a great resource for me as I learn the craft. Yew is very beautiful. The closest I can get in Missouri, USA is our eastern red cedar. Have you worked with any of that?
Thank you Carol, your kind words are much appreciated. I have turned red cedar, a long while ago someone very kindly sent me a piece. Lovely wood to work with, and it has stunning figure too :)
Take care
Mike
There's something very satisfying about yew and you certainly brought out the best in that hunk. Do you think the cracking would have been less if it were a bit dryer?
Thank you Mac, I tend to believe that cracking is a bit of a lottery, but it may have been less with slightly dryer wood .. but then ... maybe not ... lol :)
Cheers
Mike
Beautiful!!!
Thank you very much
Cheers
Mike
Excellent video! I love the yew!!
Thank you Scotty .. you're not so bad yourself mate ... lol ;)
