Brilliant demo Mike thanks. I am pleased to know that i am not the only one to produce flying bowls. I like it when demo disasters are shown as well. It has given me an idea to band saw off three corners of my bowls that have ended up with splits in the edges, making an art work out of a disaster.

Hello Mike! I have been watching your videos for a while now. You are a problem though. . . everytime I watch a video I have something else to try. The list is getting quite long now. I cannot even begin to list all the help you have given me. But, for starters: Figuring out that I could use a variety of tools with my Sovereign handle. When I bought it all I wanted was the scraping capability and never gave thought to adding other tool bars. Seeing how I should be using a swept back gouge. That was huge. Those great little ornamental bird houses you demonstrated. My lovely wife cannot wait for a few of those to be turned. The list goes on and on. Thank you for all your efforts to further this craft.

Thanks for sharing this Mike, interesting shape which challenges me so I'll give it a go sometime soon. And thanks for sharing with the 'fly past'. It happened to me when I had a catch whilst deep hollowing, the force of the catch was presumably greater than the strength of the tenon. I was that pixxxxx off I put it to one side for quite awhile and then thought: I'll try and salvage this! Not perfect but I'm well pleased with the end result.
As usual Mike. Love you showing your failures. I mean it in a nice way. It makes us ordinary turners feel as though that even the very experienced turners, stuff it up sometimes. Well done mate.

Looked like a great piece. Glad to see your fingers are still attached! You know, I am not sure about that type of cedar, but the kind we have here in my area (Midwest USA) is notoriously brash. Any hairline cracks in Missouri red cedar are potential disaster areas. I hope you can salvage the piece. Thanks again for helping to educate us. Seeing the masters suffer setbacks gives us newbies hope, and teaches us lessons too!
Nice one. I always check you out first when thinking of doing a new project. This one inspired me to make a hollow form finial lidded version - also in cedar of Lebanon coincidentally! I managed to glue up the cracks on my blank fortunately - now on my fledgling channel if interested. Cheers

After watching your video and sending you some comments via email several weeks ago, I tried turning another three sided bowl. I got to about the point you reached in your turning when disaster hit again. My tenon broke off into three pieces and gluing it did no good. So, I will try another time turning this bowl. For your viewers, this bowl looks simple to turn. Looks are very deceiving and it is actually quite challenging to turn the bowl. Make sure your blank is a cube with all sides having the same dimension. If you are off a small fraction of an inch, it will mess up the bowl since the wings will not be even. Hollowing out the inside is where the problems will raise their ugly heads. It will be very easy to have a catastrophic catch occur when turning. A small round carbide may lessen the chances of this happening. Good luck folks. This is a very challenging bowl to turn.
Mike Waldt I was able to complete my three winged bowl on my 5th attempt. I used a 3.4” x 3.4” x 3.4” cube of cherry wood. I wanted to complete using my conventional turning tools, but I still have a long way to go in being proficient using those tools. Instead I used carbide to do most of the work along with some 1/2” bowl gouge use. I discovered a small cube of wood is much more challenging to turn than a larger cube with 5” or 6” sides. I would suggest staying with closed grain woods like cherry or maple and avoid open grain woods like oak, hickory, hackberry, walnut, etc. The points of the wings tend to break off easily with open grain woods unless one posses a very light touch with the turning tool. And turning this bowl with small cubes, the open grain woods seem to catch more easily. But that is my own opinion due to inexperience turning wood. When hollowing out, be sure to mark the position of the corners on the tool rest along with the desired wall thickness of the wings. Each corner of the blank should line up with the mark on the tool rest. Accuracy in cutting your blank is paramount and all sides having the same dimension. Do not move the tool rest until the outer edges & thickness have been turned. This means the tool rest will remain in place for most of the turning until the center portion of the blank gets into the way of your turning efforts. Having a light touch is critical in turning this bowl. Sanding should be done by hand while the piece is stationary. The wings of a rotating bowl can be dangerous while sanding. Play it safe while sanding and turning. We don’t want bruised, broken or missing fingers here.
Brilliant seeing how its done and tips, ideas etc. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if choosing the Knot was such a wise choice for the base, i..e a bit like identifying a fault line? But - I've never tried, and you have so well done and thanks again Mike.
Mike, I am going to say something, but don't take it wrong. I love watching you in the shop turning anything. Your voice and the way you teach have a calming affect. What I am trying to say is this: your patience and practical attitude with your calm peaceful character are as much inspiring as your woodturning. Someone else here said the screw ups are worth value also. I really can't say this was a screw up just a mishap. Now when this happens to me... its a screw up! And I scream at myself. Not Mike Waldt. So from now on when I want to get mad I am going to tell myself... do it like Mike. LOL. Just remain calm ...... (right)
Wow, thanks so much for showing this video. This has now happened to me twice, with the tenon giving way. I thought it was my lack of skill with tenons. Now I see it can even happen with masters in the field.

That's an interesting technique and the first time I have seen the lathe used with "hollow" centers. Personally, I would advocate wearing a faceshield, although I cannot tell whether you did or not. I recently had a tenon break, and the bowl hit the camera which was literally next to my head. Take care, Mike, and thanks for sharing!

Great video Mike, as usual. Have you considered maybe putting it between centers again and try to remake a tenon on the base? With the chipped out piece the bowl would probably be somewhat smaller than planned. It might make a decent rescue project. Happy turning Mike.
Mike, you showed the basics of the process. Are you going to do more videos of the three cornered bowl? It will be interesting to see where you take this with your aesthetics.

Lovely job Mike! Even if it decided to take to the sky. Some bowls are just like birds, they never forget the wild, and you can't tame them. I forgot to say great video ... though in the beginning i would have liked to have seen a shot of the tenon. I bought a cheap 4x4 and cut it down to several 4x4x4 and just practiced on those. non of them turned out very well as it was pine. Maybe I needed to sharpen or just baby the cuts a little more, but pine was difficult. Thanks again for all that you do.

Hey Mike you could stick it back on a worm screw or a screw chuck because you haven’t turned away too much of the middle make another tenant and do it again Personally I have made three of these and I found if you have it using tailstock for almost all of the interior turning it gives it much more stability and much less likely to ping off Hope this helps
Great video .. again ! Really nice to see the fails as well as the successes . For me ,one more reason why getting a log burner was a great idea that way my fails are never wasted . Jokes aside ...shame ! As it was looking like a nice piece.

Seems to me that you could have salvaged the bowl by mounting it with a glue block on the broke tenon end after sanding flat. I always try to save a broken project. Check out my last video and see what I mean. I may just have to make one of those. Looks like fun. Take care, Larry
Mike, I enjoyed watching you turn your three cornered bowl your way. When the tenon sheared off, you could have used a spur/drive center and a live center to turn a new tenon. You only needed 1/4" to 3/8" tenon (6mm to 9mm. You could have finished to bowl with a little more curve toward the base. You missed a design opportunity.
Nice go at it anyway. Yeah, the outside looked super smooth. Would have been a beautiful bowl. Could you use a forstner bit and make a recess to remount it?
The term used in Oz is.. 'Bugger'. Shame it took off. Had something similar happen last week with a wood called 'Silver Princess'. ( Eucalyptus caesia). Stress fractures around the tenon that were nor apparent at the time. I do like the shape and will put it on my list of projects for the future. Thanks Mike.

Question: Would it create less pressure on the piece if the tail stock point of the wood was cut off to produce a flat surface and make less hollowing necessary? Or is more difficult turning the point of the exercise? Going to try this over the coming week. Keep the videos coming Mike Kevin

So you are human after all 😀 And there's me thinking that the gods of woodturning don't make mistakes or cockups. Not like us mere mortals. Still, I think I've got round my latest disaster and watching your videos has taught me a lot.
Shame the tenon gave way. This method of chucking is the same as demonstrated at the Club in November by Chris Fisher. He did suggest that, due to the unequal stresses it’s a good idea to put a chunky than usual tenon on the piece. He also strongly advised keeping fingers, knuckles and any other body parts away from the flying wings. I think he may have been referring to self removal of ones Crown Jewels! After watching your video and sending you some comments via email several weeks ago, I tried turning another three sided bowl. I got to about the point you reached in your turning when disaster hit again. My tenon broke off into three pieces and gluing it did no good. So, I will try another time turning this bowl.
For your viewers, this bowl looks simple to turn. Looks are very deceiving and it is actually quite challenging to turn the bowl. Make sure your blank is a cube with all sides having the same dimension. If you are off a small fraction of an inch, it will mess up the bowl since the wings will not be even. Hollowing out the inside is where the problems will raise their ugly heads. It will be very easy to have a catastrophic catch occur when turning. A small round carbide may lessen the chances of this happening. Good luck folks. This is a very challenging bowl to turn.

I was able to complete my three winged bowl on my 5th attempt. I used a 3.4” x 3.4” x 3.4” cube of cherry wood. I wanted to complete using my conventional turning tools, but I still have a long way to go in being proficient using those tools. Instead I used carbide to do most of the work along with some 1/2” bowl gouge use.
I discovered a small cube of wood is much more challenging to turn than a larger cube with 5” or 6” sides. I would suggest staying with closed grain woods like cherry or maple and avoid open grain woods like oak, hickory, hackberry, walnut, etc. The points of the wings tend to break off easily with open grain woods unless one posses a very light touch with the turning tool. And turning this bowl with small cubes, the open grain woods seem to catch more easily. But that is my own opinion due to inexperience turning wood.
When hollowing out, be sure to mark the position of the corners on the tool rest along with the desired wall thickness of the wings. Each corner of the blank should line up with the mark on the tool rest. Accuracy in cutting your blank is paramount and all sides having the same dimension. Do not move the tool rest until the outer edges & thickness have been turned. This means the tool rest will remain in place for most of the turning until the center portion of the blank gets into the way of your turning efforts.
Having a light touch is critical in turning this bowl. Sanding should be done by hand while the piece is stationary. The wings of a rotating bowl can be dangerous while sanding. Play it safe while sanding and turning. We don’t want bruised, broken or missing fingers here.
Brilliant seeing how its done and tips, ideas etc. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if choosing the Knot was such a wise choice for the base, i..e a bit like identifying a fault line? But - I've never tried, and you have so well done and thanks again Mike.

Mike, I am going to say something, but don't take it wrong. I love watching you in the shop turning anything. Your voice and the way you teach have a calming affect. What I am trying to say is this: your patience and practical attitude with your calm peaceful character are as much inspiring as your woodturning. Someone else here said the screw ups are worth value also. I really can't say this was a screw up just a mishap. Now when this happens to me... its a screw up! And I scream at myself. Not Mike Waldt. That's an interesting technique and the first time I have seen the lathe used with "hollow" centers. Personally, I would advocate wearing a faceshield, although I cannot tell whether you did or not. I recently had a tenon break, and the bowl hit the camera which was literally next to my head. Take care, Mike, and thanks for sharing!

Great video Mike, as usual. Have you considered maybe putting it between centers again and try to remake a tenon on the base? With the chipped out piece the bowl would probably be somewhat smaller than planned. It might make a decent rescue project. Happy turning Mike.

I forgot to say great video ... though in the beginning i would have liked to have seen a shot of the tenon. I bought a cheap 4x4 and cut it down to several 4x4x4 and just practiced on those. non of them turned out very well as it was pine. Maybe I needed to sharpen or just baby the cuts a little more, but pine was difficult. Thanks again for all that you do.

Hey Mike you could stick it back on a worm screw or a screw chuck because you haven’t turned away too much of the middle make another tenant and do it again
Personally I have made three of these and I found if you have it using tailstock for almost all of the interior turning it gives it much more stability and much less likely to ping off

Seems to me that you could have salvaged the bowl by mounting it with a glue block on the broke tenon end after sanding flat. I always try to save a broken project. Check out my last video and see what I mean. I may just have to make one of those. Looks like fun. Take care, Larry

Mike, I enjoyed watching you turn your three cornered bowl your way. When the tenon sheared off, you could have used a spur/drive center and a live center to turn a new tenon. You only needed 1/4" to 3/8" tenon (6mm to 9mm. You could have finished to bowl with a little more curve toward the base. You missed a design opportunity.

The term used in Oz is.. 'Bugger'. Shame it took off. Had something similar happen last week with a wood called 'Silver Princess'. ( Eucalyptus caesia). Stress fractures around the tenon that were nor apparent at the time. I do like the shape and will put it on my list of projects for the future. Thanks Mike.

Question:
Would it create less pressure on the piece if the tail stock point of the wood was cut off to produce a flat surface and make less hollowing necessary? Or is more difficult turning the point of the exercise?

Shame the tenon gave way. This method of chucking is the same as demonstrated at the Club in November by Chris Fisher. He did suggest that, due to the unequal stresses it’s a good idea to put a chunky than usual tenon on the piece. He also strongly advised keeping fingers, knuckles and any other body parts away from the flying wings. I think he may have been referring to self removal of ones Crown Jewels!
