Law School vs. Med School: Which Is Harder?

  • Devin Stone, the Legal Eagle himself, challenged me to a debate over which was harder: Med School or Law School. So he got a COVID test and came to New York to hold a mock trial face to face. Med School was BRUTAL, but I never spent a moment in law school so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Devin has debunked legal misinformation from famous movies like Legally Blonde and shows like Suits, so I was in for a challenge. Needless to say, Devin brought his A-game and showed me a thing or two. What do you think? Which is harder? Let me know in the comments.

      The funny thing for me is that some parents want their kids to have more stable and reliable jobs. (I'm lucky that my parents are super supportive and don't care what profession I'm interested in.) And then there's me who wants to go to Yale Medical for grad school because as well as taking medical classes I can also take some classes on the law. So the humor in that is that my parents would ask "doctor or lawyer" and I would reply "why not both".
      So yeah, kinda the irony behind it.

    My dad is a lawyer and he made a great comparison between being a doctor and a lawyer. Simply put, the stakes are often higher for a doctor. A lawyer may be faced with a problem and have a week to think about it to reach the right conclusion. A doctor may be faced with a problem and have minutes to reach the right conclusion. And if he fails, there’s a dead body that he’s responsible for.
    It’s kind of like bus drivers and pilots. Both are jobs where you are transporting lots of people. But if a bus breaks down with passengers, it’s an inconvenience. If a plane breaks down with passengers, it’s a crisis where you must make the right move or hundreds of people will die.

      You're actually comparing ER doctors with lawyers who are working on a document. The reverse is also true: Consider family or general practice doctors giving routine advice. Meanwhile, you also have trial lawyers arguing an appeal in front of a judicial panel. If they trip up on the caselaw or the facts, the loss is often in the tens or hundreds of millions-which affects a ton of employees and their families. So, there are high stakes in both professions.

    • @MultiAnimationboy
      @MultiAnimationboy 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +80

      @@romanviceI agree. This mindset of all doctors being put in a situation where someone might die in an instant is not true. It almost deterred me from applying too. You can, however, die (from the inside, or otherwise) if you're a lawyer and you embarrass yourself on TV somehow and end up causing huge losses to your client. Both schools have their own challenging specialties that are all optional.

    A doctor and a lawyer were at a party. After a while the doctor and the lawyer met up. The doctor said "I spent all evening answering medical questions. How do you get people to not ask you so many legal questions?" And the lawyer said," oh that's easy I answer it and then I sent him a bill in the morning."
    The doctor thought this was a great idea. So he remembered who he assisted that evening and prepared all the bills went out to the mailbox and found a bill from the lawyer in the morning.

    I am an attorney. My daughter is a doctor. I can say unequivocally that Med School is much, much harder, and the training after far more difficult for doctors. It seems like boards are like taking the bar twice in med school, once in residency, and once after. The bar was hard, but I only had to take it once. The California bar pass rate is around 20%, though. It is hard!

    An old colleague of mine (who just finished his PhD as I was starting mine) moved from science to medicine. His take was that the medicine degree was a lot more work (volume/hours etc), but that his PhD was intellectually way harder. He mentioned the amount of memorizing required for medicine, and did mention some dissatisfaction that he didn’t feel that he was studying science anymore, but rather just learning to memorize and apply the products of science.
    I’ve got no skin in the game …but that was his take.

    • @martel8626
      @martel8626 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can empathise with that. I have a science background (only to MSc level though, not PhD) but am now in law school in a Common Law country. In my experience law is a bit like the way your colleague described medicine, i.e., there is lots of rote learning. The concepts involved are really not that difficult (except for maybe a few awkward and unintuitive ideas around trusts and land law), but there is so much of it. It's death by a thousand cuts. Simple ideas, but an enormous number of them that are described in their own special language and that must be backed up by specific legislation, case law, etc. It's a different sort of challenge than something which is more conceptually complex.

      Currently near exams and I can relate to this so hard. My two favorite moments in Med School occurred at graduation for 2 specific reasons:
    1. Because my dad was an alumnus of the same school, he was allowed (in cap and gown) to hand me my diploma on stage when my name was called. I’ll never forget that moment.
    2. Two days after graduation, I married my longtime fiancée. After a one week honeymoon, we drove across country to begin a new life (for me, that meant starting my internship). 42 years later we’re still married, I’m still practicing medicine and my wife still puts up with me.
    My worst memory of med school: rounding on patients during my internal medicine rotation: round by myself first, then round with the intern, then with the chief resident, and finally, with the attending, bombarded with tough (read: impossible) clinical questions each time (known as "getting pimped"). A miserable rite of passage; my low back has never recovered from the hours of standing day after day and my ego remains bruised!

    The greatest part about this video is the fact that the Doctor DRESSES like a Doctor and the lawyer DRESSES like a lawyer. Even down to the hair, I'm actually taken aback by that. Every lawyer I've ever met/seen on TV has that slicked back hair, the really classy suit. Every ER Doctor looks like he hasn't slept in days and uses hair gel in their hair to give it that "bounce".

      A doctor would ALWAYS be a doctor. There is some earning some possible recognition, high morale, NO LIFE. A lawyer would not always make that "desired movie line income" because competition is very high after school, unless you find a good firm that lets you in, then you will have a good shoot of living THE LIFE. meanwhile only cheap cases and mostly no life... As a nurse I had taken care, of our retired elderly Doctors and well, Our facility and every facility here in my state, our doctors are ARE ALWAYS CALLED Doctor so and so, does not matter if they practice or not.

    As a law student, I honestly think med school itself is probably harder as far as memorization and the weight of potentially killing someone or not diagnosing them correctly but I think the fact that finals (and MAYBE midterms if youre lucky) determine whether you pass or fail- so you get one chance per class- and the grades are curved so only so many people can get an A, a B, and so on, plus the Bar Exam, probably evens the score. Especially because the Boards actually make sense but the Bar Exam only exists to keep people of color, poor people, and women out of the legal field so it’s complete nonsense. The information on the Bar has nothing to do with what you learned in law school so studying for it is a whole ‘nother version of school except that one is self-taught, no help from an actual institution, and costs absurd amounts of money out of pocket, and you absolutely cannot work while studying for it or you’re gonna be really gambling on whether you have to take it again and spend even more money and not have a job for even longer.
    I think overall it’s super subjective because how hard you find one or the other will be based on your strengths. I, personally, would likely find med school more difficult because I’m not great at science and med terms are like learning a whole new language and I’m not good at those either 😂 non-English legal terms are at least usually Latin, which is an actual existing language so not as difficult to fit into your normal vocabulary. Although, if they have actual grades besides just one single exam determining their entire course grade, I might be a little envious. Maybe I should’ve just gone to med school and figured the science thing out along the way 😅
