Every time I see Light Yagami on top, I kept on thinking "Did they release a new season of Death Note?" but then again I know that they didn't. It's just amazing how Death Note keeps getting people's attention every now and then. Death Note is definitely an anime of all ages / era.
Because people keep recommending Death Note as a gateway anime. Meaning someone new to anime who have never watched anything or only a few shows are more likely to have watched Death Note. Same for Code Geass. Then those people recommend the same anime to their friends, it's a cycle.
Death note is something where only supernatural is death note and shinigami, no powers in characters , so it's easier to watch that as a beginner , that's why it's so popular.
