Methodology
1) I gathered data from mywaifulist.mo... . The .csv files containing search interest values were downloaded from Google Trends for every waifu.
2) Ammount Search Tool determined the average monthly search volume for every anime.
3) The number of searches per month for each calendar year were proportioned based on official reports from Google.
4) Data modeling through an algorithm invented by me to obtain the most realistic data possible.
5) Search interest values and proportioned monthly search volumes were placed in Excel for calculations.
6) The data was placed into Flourish Studio to create the data visualization piece.
7) Image and audio assets were added with Wondershare Filmora.

I just want to clear up some doubts you might have:
From minute 1:26 to 4:52 i had to put the TH-cam music cause the previous one gave me copyright.. 15 seconds of copyright muted 3+ minutes of audio. SAD!
- Why some results are different from the previous video?
Well, as I have specified in each description, my searches are based on an algorithm that is not perfect and therefore cannot give me 100% certain results.
I can assure you though that compared to the 2020 video this is far more accurate, in fact I made a lot of improvements on the algorithm
- I made a big mistake, i don't know why but the data of Kurisu Makise didn't show up and i didn't see that
Unfortunately the part when Zero Two, Raphtalia and Nezuko appear, I couldn't put the songs on theme because they gave me copyright problems.
So I decided to put 2 JoJo songs because they are fantastic and always give me the idea of boss music
- How long did it take me to make this video?
4 days to collect and adjust data
1 day to find the gifs to put to each character
1 day for the Awards part of each year
1 day for to find and put the music
so more or less a week (considering I worked on the video about 10 hours a day)

It was around 2016 that I noticed it taking a mainstream explosion. It started in 2013 with the release of attack on Titan and then just steadily kept up with each release around that time. SAO probably was also a big step sadly, it got a lot of my friends into anime that otherwise had no interest, so imagine that as a kind of primer having dropped in 2012.

thats because most of the simping for Sakura was secondhand simping through Naruto. As soon as Naruto stopped simping for her, almost everyone else did too. People didnt hate Sakura for most of the duration the anime aired. People hate her because she didnt have as much growth in power, character and achievements, whereas everyone else surpassed their ideals
Sakura is like that one pop idol that a lot of people don't like, but that's exactly what keeps her up the charts.

I refuse to believe that Mio Akiyama didn't appear at all around 2009-2012 or whenever K-ON! came out, it was such an insanely popular thing. She even won some big late 2020/19 (iirc) waifu contests and came super far in others

The way Sakura dominates most of the 2000s-10s tells you that
1) having a large enough seasonal audience is a fairly recent thing in the Western anime fandom, unlike in Japan;
2) popularity based on search frequency like this is unavoidably tilted towards show that has a huge, far-reaching casual audience (shounen in this case) who might not have deep engagement with the more committed core fandom;
3) as opposed to long-running series, seasonal anime has a very limited window for gaining popularity and it's usually condemned to oblivion a few month after it's finished airing.
these are google search results from any man and his dog eg 99% of the results are people who know nothing about anime, so they search what the see on tv, news, advertisements and what the kids are watching on TV eg = not most the good stuff as its to spicy/violent for kids.
so u end up with someone like Sakura, who purely because she is the only main female character for most of the anime next to the main character Naruto himself = top searched, meanwhile she was extremely disliked by the anime fans for her unlikable personality, which doesnt really get any better even after it changes when she grows up, just goes from bad to another bad and well she didnt look all that hot either... hence when u see folks who spend thousands on figurines, "sakura" is like the weres wally of figurines, she only shows up if folks collect every character, regardless if they like them or not, simply to complete the set... meanwhile virtually every figurine you see virtually every hardcore collector/weeb putting on showcase = absent in these search results.

The cool thing about this is that is sort of works as an animated timeline of anime history. You can see where different anime came out or finished, even pick out different eras in anime publication based on who's on the list. If you know what your looking for you can even spot certain arcs. It's pretty neat

You can also see what animes were on top bc they were the seasonal novelty and which ones stayed on the top 20 way after their initial boom bc of the impact the show left like Attack on Titan, Violet Evergarden or SAO and, the most impressive ones for me, Dragon Ball and Naruto
I was just thinking how I'd love to see this against a timeline. Like. When Hinata briefly shot up, was that due to THAT filler arc? Some stuff yo ucan kinda guess just from the timeline. Like Yoruichi BEING on the list is a sign that THAT episode had already happened, but it'd still be cool to see for those who can't be bothered to watch ALL the things. Shout out to Bleach. They might not have cracked number one, but the series consistently had 4-5 characters in the top ten and 2-3 in the top five for nearly a decade. Tite Kubo may not have had the mass mainstream appeal, but his characters consistently were knocking it out of the park.

I love how, even though Dragon Ball had already ended long before most of these shows started airing, Bulma was still a top tier waifu. It wasn't until 2020 when she finally fell off from the top 18 and that was only because Super ended. Absolutely phenomenal.

It's interesting how it's way harder to recognize the past weeb landscape through google searches before than it is now. Back then, while shonen held an important place, a lot of animes and waifus that were extremely popular never broke the mainstream. Thinking about C.C., who had a huge following, but never got top 1, for example. None of the K-on girls showed up too.
I think C.C. wasn't as charming to the general public. At the same time, CG's drawing style isn't liked by everyone.
@@vonivon_ Honestly, I don't think there was wider general public for anime outside Japan. The general public landscape was very hostile to watching anime after elementary school, there was a "they'll grow out of it" attitude to it, even in countries that had historically a very strong affinity for anime like France. Anime stopped at pokemon and the big 3 for most people. I think it explains the chart better than just art style. What nerds and the general public knew just wasn't as close as it is now. It's become increasingly harder to know good yet niche shows.
C.C and the K-on girls were a huge Japan thing, not so much elsewhere though. Although I do love C.C myself though.
At least for the early years, this is more of an "anime popularity chart" than anything to do with waifus. I think it'd look different, if we had data from image archives instead of google searches.
